Astronomical Almanac 2003-2010 Contacts Further Reading Publishing History Elements of Pantheism, the only summary of pantheist history, theory and practice in print, was first published in 1999 by Element Books, at the time one of the largest and most dynamic publishers of religion and related books, as part of a very big series on world religions. Element Books went bankrupt in 2001. Harper Collins bought up the series rights but "killed" many of the titles. For a year or two the book was out of print. I made it available for free private use on the Internet. Some warehouse and used copies were floating around. Dealers sold it at Amazon at increasingly inflated prices, starting at $15 and creeping up eventually by May 2004 to over $60 and in one outrageous case $157!

The Shape of the Next Religion Douglas Muder Go to a non-hypertext version of this essay. Modern America, like Rome at the time of Christ, is in a period of rising secularism and religious chaos. Christianity has lost the power to shape our culture, and no rival religion or philosophy seems able to take its place. I argue that this period of tension will end as the Roman one didwith the advent of a new religion that will synthesize the best features of our current religions into a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Waiting for the Unknown God
The Athenian citizens who gathered on Mars Hill to listen to Paul talk about "the unknown God" had little reason to be optimistic about the future of religion. Or rather, they had little reason to be optimistic about the future of any of the religions they knew about. Neither do we. But does that mean that there will never again be a dominant religion? Why None of the Contenders can become Champion
Almost all of the religions currently contending for dominance in America can be placed in one of the following four categories: historical monotheism, Scientism, Eastern religions, and Earth-centered religions. None of them is in a position to pick up the baton that Christianity has dropped. Predecessors of the Next Religion
At any given point in history there is a central metaphor , a field of thought which provides the images and vocabulary for a culture's religious expression. This field of thoughtbe it hunting, agriculture, politics, or physicsmay have no explicit religious content of its own, but the images and concepts that it provides have a profound effect on the religion of its time.

Pantheism
Pantheism is the philosophy that everything is God (pan="everything" theos="God") or that the universe and nature are divine Pantheism is distinguished from panentheism, which holds that God is in everything, but also transcends the Universe. Strict pantheism is not a theism. It does not believe in a transcendent or personal God who is the creator of the universe and the judge of humans. Many pantheists feel the word "God" is too loaded with these connotations and never use the word in their own practice - though they may use it to simplify, or to explain things to theists. Pantheism has often been accused of atheism , and not just because it rejects the idea of a personal creator God. Strict or naturalistic pantheism believes that the Universe either originated itself out of nothing, or has existed forever. Modern scientific pantheism is materialistic. It believes that design in the universe can be fully accounted for by principles of evolution and self-organization . It does not believe in separate spirits or survival of the soul after death. Pantheists concerned about personal immortality seek it in realistic ways - through children, deeds, works, and the memories of the living.

Pantheism A definition of Pantheism To lay the preliminary groundwork we need to establish what is pantheism. By its very etymology the term Pantheism signifies that the universe (everything - pan - that exists) is God, and God is the universe. This is both the popular idea attached to the term and also a formal definition often given of it. The aggregate of individual things is God. The three principal forms in which Pantheism is propagated and taught is as follows: 1. That which ascribes to the Infinite and Universal Being, the attributes (to a certain extent at least) of both mind and matter, namely, thought and extension. 2. That which ascribes to it only the attributes of matter, what we may call materialistic Pantheism. 3. That which ascribes to it only the attributes of spirit, or idealistic Pantheism. The main tenets of Pantheism It may readily be assumed then that Pantheism holds the following: The Infinite God has no existence before or out of the world. The world is, therefore, not only consubstantial, but co-eternal with God. The created order is identified with God; God, matter and whatever else there is are taken together in one lump, mixed together and referred to as one entity. An distinction between Maker and made things cease to exist because they are all one and the same. Naturally such a stance precluded the idea of creation. At best the biblical doctrine of creation is relegated to something far different: some Pantheists maintain that whatever is is an eternal and necessary process. (Modern Process Theology comes under the same indictment since it depicts God as changing and progressing).

Raised in an extreme American fundamentalist family, he found it more and more difficult to accept his maternal religion and in light of personal experiences with self-acceptance, he discovered a more honest approach to reality TRUTH. This one word holds some of the greatest implications for the history of humanity. "What is truth?" is probably the most fundamental question and quest within a human being’s life. Its answers are never easy, never fully revealed, and always extremely personalized. However, groups do manage to form, wherein people of similar, logical minds regarding the truth of this reality we live in, begin to develop a communal bond amongst themselves and a much-needed sense of acceptance and belonging. Within the vast range of philosophical and religious choices offered throughout the history of Homo sapient thought, Pantheism is probably the oldest, most basic and visceral of all

Pantheism
The book recognized as containing the most complete attempt at explaining and defending pantheism from a philosophical perspective is Spinoza's Ethics , finished in 1675 two years before his death. In 1720 John Toland wrote the Pantheisticon: or The Form of Celebrating the Socratic-Society in Latin. He (possibly) coined the term "pantheist" and used it as a synonym for "Spinozist." However, aside from some interesting pantheistic sounding slogans (like "Every Thing is to All, as All is to Every Thing"), and despite promising "A short Dissertation upon a Two-fold philosophy of the Pantheists" Toland's work has little to do with pantheism.
Pantheism and Theism
Where pantheism is considered as an alternative Not all of the problems generated by the theistic notion of God are also problems for pantheism. But given a suitable reformulation, some of them will be. And, as expected, pantheism will also generate some difficulties peculiar to itself. Thus, although evil and creation do not present identical problems for pantheism and the theism, and may even be inherent to theism; it

PANTHEIST NATURE CONSERVANCY VIEWS AND PHILOSOPHIES OF PANTHEISM
The Pantheist philosophy / religion is a concept and viewpoint that is thousands of years old with its origin dating back as far as 11,000 years ago within the concept of the Hindu religion. Pantheism has grown and evolved continually since it s beginning; it is dynamic and constantly changing. Its most basic form is found in the Hindu sacred text of the Bhagavad - Gita, but Modern Pantheism is not bound to that document. There are many different conceptual views of Pantheism in the current era. Some support the idea that Modern Pantheism is atheistic; others disagree. The Conservancy of the Phoenix philosophy of Pantheism is that Pantheism is not atheistic, but that it is a philosophy that is dynamic and extends beyond the Judeo-Christian concept of "God." Phoenix Pantheism is atheistic only in the sense that it does not limit its philosophy to the Judeo-Christian view of "God." The "Collective Intelligence" is the summation of all things from Alpha to Omega

76. Pantheism
A single page description of pantheism.
http://www.geocities.com/smhs_ap/pantheism.html
Graphics by Pantheism Pantheism is often confused with polytheism-the belief in many Gods-but in fact, Pantheism is neither a theism nor an atheism but is a belief that God is everything. When one looks at the root of the word "pantheism," he will see that "pan" means all and "theos" means God, thus the word "pantheism" define the philosophy perfectly. Pantheism is an acient philosophy and has become incorporated in many religions such as Buddhism or Hinduism. However, Pantheism is more popular than most religions because it offers a way for a person to experience religion without commitment. In this context, many self-proclaimed atheists are indeed Pantheists.
The central tenet of Pantheism is rougly the same as that of the Stoicis-the belief that God is not a form, but that he is everything and everyone. Both philosophies proclaim that nature is supreme to all things and that God dwells in every living object; Stoicism and Pantheism agree that God is all and all is God, but despite the similarities, Pantheism is distinct. The chief difference between Pantheism and any other philosophy is that Pantheists do not recognize nor discredit the existence of God. To a Pantheist, God does not surpass validity but instead is innate in it.
