Pagans In Interfaith Dialogue
New Faiths, New Challenges
presented by Donald H. Frew
at the 1993 Parliament of the World’s Religions Hello and welcome. My name is Donald H. Frew. I am an Elder of the Covenant of the Goddess, the world’s largest religious organization for Neo-Pagan Witches, and I currently serve that organization as its National Public Information Officer. I have spent the last 8 years handling virtually all of CoG’s interfaith outreach. And in that capacity, I have served on the Board of Directors of the Berkeley Area Interfaith Council for last 7 years. Yesterday, Dr. J. Gordon Melton spoke on the challenges for "mainstream" religious groups encountering what he called New Religious Movements. He spoke from the point of view of a minister in one of those "mainstream" faiths looking out at all the New Religious Movements all over America. I am here, as a Neo-Pagan priest, to offer some observations from the other side of the dialogue. I will take questions at the end. First, a little bit of background...

Translated from the Latin. Story of the last great martyr of Egypt under paganism.

The Genuine Acts of Peter.
The Genuine Acts of Peter.
Were all the limbs of my body to be turned into tongues, and all the joints of my limbs to utter articulate sounds, it would noways be sufficient to express who, how great and how good, was our most blessed Father Peter, Archbishop of Alexandria. Especially incongruous do I consider it to commit to paper what perils he underwent by tyrants, what conflicts he endured with Gentiles and heretics, lest I should seem to make these the subjects of my panegyric rather than that passion to which he manfully submitted to make safe the people of God. Nevertheless, because the office of the narrator must fail in narrating his inmost conversation and wonderful deeds, and language is noways sufficient for the task, I have considered it convenient to describe only those exploits of his by which he is known to have attained to the pontificate, and after Arius had been cut off from the unity of the Church, to have been crowned with the martyr's laurel. Yet this do I consider to be a glorious end, and a spectacle of a magnificent contest, sufficient for those who do not doubt of a truthful narration, which is unstained by falsehood. In commencing, therefore, our account of the episcopate of this most holy man, let us call to our aid his own language, in order that we may make it co-operate with our own style. Alexandria is a city of exceeding magnitude, which holds the first place not only among the Egyptians, but the Thebans also and the Libyans, who are at no great distance from Egypt.

Decepto-Meter
Satanic Quote Christianity Trasher This is one of the Watchtower's Star Witnesses! Trashes whole of Core Christianity. Weigall, is a modernist and doesn't believe the Bible is God's word. He trashes 99% of what both JW's and Trinitarians believe as from Pagan origin. JW's leave the impression that Weigall would exempt JW's from his comments! In fact, Weigall specifically addresses the Watchtower/Arian/Jw view of God known as Angel-Christology, stating that "angel-Christology" is from Pagan origin! The premise of the entire book is that if something was taught before it was written in the Bible, it is of pagan origin. Problem is, Weigall claims to have found 27 major Bible doctrines to exist in Pagan religions before it was first recorded in the Bible. Such a conclusion is simply invalid and for this reason, it is utter deception for the Jehovah's Witnesses to use Weigall as proof that trinity is pagan, because the same identical logic would prove the virgin birth as pagan. Weigall, Arthur: The Paganism in Our Christianity How the quote appears in "Should you believe in the Trinity", Watchtower, JW's booklet:

Paganism For Beginners
an introduction to natural magick
I've often heard it said that there are as many reasons for becoming Pagan as there are Pagans! For me, it started in childhood with a feeling of kinship with the natural world... a belief that divinity was not something apart from us but something within all of us... humans, animals, birds, plants... within all life and within the Earth Herself. Later I found out that there was a name for this belief system: Pantheism. Other Pagan belief systems include the many varieties of witchcraft one of which is Wicca (trying saying that three times fast LOL!) There are also several Wiccan sects including Gardenerian and Alexandrian. Other Pagan paths are Shamanism, Asatru, Family Traditions, Celtic Traditionalism, Druidism, Strega, Santeria, Voudon, Ceremonial Magick and Mystery Traditions. There are many more. Some Pagans believe in the divine pair, God and Goddess . Some honor a pantheon or group of deities, some do not believe in god/dess personified but hold that nature itself is a creative presence. Some Pagans are eclectic and not allied with any one established belief system. One thing Pagans do not do is worship the Devil or Satan, who is actually a Christian figure, the opponent or adversary of the Christian God.
Pagans respect and love the natural world of which we are all a part. Sexual parity and personal spiritual expression are also usually firmly upheld. We try to live our lives attuned to the cycles of Nature and often celebrate the turning of the seasons and mark life passages like birth, marriage (handfasting) and death with solitary or group rituals. These rites can be held outdoors or in... in fact, anywhere! Man-made churches are not necessary because the entire Universe is a sacred place. They may involve singing, dancing

174. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Bertulf
Converted to Christianity from paganism, entered the monastery of Luxeuil under the Rule of St. Columban, became abbot of Bobbio, was staunchly antiArian, d. 639 or 640. Feast day 19 August.

St. Bertulf
Abbot of Bobbio, date of birth unknown; d. 639 or 640. He was the son of a pagan nobleman in Austrasia and a near relative of St. Arnulf, Bishop of Metz, whose pious example had such an influence on Bertulf that he became a Christian and in 620 entered the monastery of Luxeuil. A few years later he became acquainted with Abbot Attala, who had come to Luxeuil on a visit, and, with permission of Abbot Eustace of Luxeuil, joined Attala's community at Bobbio in Italy. Upon the death of Attala, in 627, Bertulf was elected by the monks of Bobbio as their abbot. Like his holy predecessor, he insisted on the observance of the austere rule introduced by St. Columban, the founder of Bobbio, and preached fearlessly against Arianism , which had gained a firm foothold in Italy under the Lombard kings. When the Bishop of Tortona endeavoured to bring Bobbio under his own jurisdiction, Bertulf hastened to Rome, where Pope Honorius received him kindly and granted the monastery entire exemption from episcopal jurisdiction. Jonas, a monk of Bobbio, who accompanied Bertulf on his journey to Rome, relates that, while returning to his monastery, Bertulf was attacked by a deadly fever, and cured miraculously by St. Peter. The same author ascribes a few other

Wikipedia
paganism Within a European Christian context, paganism is a catch-all term which has come to connote a broad set of not necessarily compatible religious beliefs and practices (see Cult (religion) ) of a natural religion (as opposed to a revealed religion of a text), which are usually, but not necessarily, characterized by polytheism and, less commonly, animism . There is little organized "-ism" in paganism.
Etymological
Origins and meanings of the term
The etymology of the term pagan can be traced. According to Harry Thurston Peck, Harper's Dictionary of Classical Antiquity the Latin noun paganus was used to mean "country dweller, villager" and originally had no denigrating connotations. The derived adjective meant "

The Murder and Resurrection of Paganism
by William Sierichs, Jr.
The paganism of the Classical Greek and Roman civilizations did not die. It was murdered. And in some ways, it has returned to take revenge upon its killer. A selection of books about the end of paganism details the great struggle between a culture that had existed for thousands of years, and an upstart cult that borrowed what it needed from the pagans and then suppressed them with a totalitarian fury. The Greco-Roman civilization had its faults, but it boasted great intellectual and religious diversity, usuallynot alwaysprotected by a form of freedom of speech. christianity deniaaed intellectual freedom and forced the Western world intoa theological strait jacket that could not be kept tight. civilization's struggle to escape Christian tyranny led to some of the worst violence ever. After 1,400 years, Christianity lost, and the free spirit and diversity found in the great pagan civilizations has been slowly reviving. Several recent books offer portraits of what was lost, and how. Porphyry's Against the ChristiansThe Literary Remains edited and translated by R. Joseph Hoffman of Oxford University(180pp., Prometheus Books), is almost a synopsis in itself of pagans vs. Christians.

http://athena.english.vt.edu/~marvin/syngeweb/pagan.html
the Gene A. Plunka essay not only because of its applicability to my own research, but for its thoroughness at caulking heretofore the greatest hole in my argument. I contend that Synge's use of Celtic mythology and folklore in "Riders to the Sea" provides every Irish man and woman, whether Protestant or Catholic, a primitive and shared narrative of a singular people. Any biblical reference in the work, such as the apocalyptic vision of the riders, exposes itself to sectarian extrapolations, and thus pries the gap between the opposing sects even further. Plunka asserts, though, in "Synge's Homage to Paganism in Riders to the Sea ," that any Christian allusion in the play is wholly eclipsed by a great hegemony of pagan references. Furthermore, Plunka claims that many of the biblical references are neither religious nor even biblical. For example, many of the addresses to God, such as when Cathleen says "she's that sorry, God help her," are idioms and only idioms. They are part of a tradition of natural discourse. And the vision of the riders may be less a reference to the apocalypse than it is a scion of ancient fairy lore. Plunka then goes into a close reading of the text itself, highlighting all the pagan elements and citing the respective fairy lore from which they came. He tells us that the omnipotence and draw of the sea equates the power of the Irish sea god, Manannan Mac Lir. He notes that in an early draft of the writing, Martinmas was the time of the play, but that Synge changed it to Samhain, "a feast of the dead," when the "burial caves and fairy burrows were left open to allow spirits to come out for an airing." He explains the mythological implications of the predominant colors in the play, noting the perhaps universal belief that black and white is emblematic of good and evil, while also describing the peculiarly Irish understanding of the implications of the use of grey and red. He describes the props, and how each relates to a myth; and, among other apparently biblical references, he directs us to Irish legends of ghastly riders dashing through the marshes.
