Appropriate Response
Death Wishes March 29, 2005 I try to avoid doing reactive pieces. By this, I mean that I don't like doing columns that are specifically in response to something that the Religious Right does. To me, my columns are about Pagan issues, specifically those internal to the Pagan Community. One of the reasons I haven't written one in a while is that most of the topics I could address (without repeating myself) have been on the subject of right-wing Christian activities, which isn't what I like to think my writing is about. However, I've been following the Terri Schiavo case with some interest, and it occurs to me that there is a Pagan angle to the issue. Specifically, I want to discuss Death in a Pagan context. One of the things that drew me to Paganism is its attention to life it often seems to me that Christians are so concerned about getting into Heaven that they pay very little attention to this world. Worse, some Christians seem to think that any source of joy in this world is sinful. While I don't for a minute believe that they represent a majority of Christians, they do seem to get a lot of press.

122. Gothic Paganism - An Introductory Essay
an Introductory Essay on Gothic paganism an amalgam of the gothic, pagan, dark fantasy, and medieval subcultures.

Gothic Paganism
- an Introductory Essay
Gothdom embraces all religions, all denominations and all races, but it is not a religious movement. Many Goths are atheists and a sizable minority are new age spiritualists, Wiccans or pagans, Thelemites, and members of other alternative religious groups. Basically Goth is not about religion, but with the imagery of religion. Modern neo-pagans follow a path based on the ancient agrarian traditions of pre-Christian Europe. Many have the Great Mother Goddess and Her son/consort the Horned Lord as central deities. Pagans look to the Old Religion, folk practices and customs of times gone by. There they find a faith rooted in the natural world, in the cycles of the seasons and the phases of the moon. Why then gothic Paganism? Most (though by no means all) neo-pagans - from Druids to Church of All Worlds grokk-ers to eco-feminists - come from the baby-boom generation. Their `rainbow' approach to life carries over, creating a pagan path that focusses on the summer side of the year and the light side of the Wheel. This has earned the derogatory nickname of `Bambi Wicca'. That sunny mode also serves as a protective coloration of sorts; many in the mundane world still unfairly view pagans as satanic baby-killers Yet with the gothic emphasis on darkness, combining a gothic outlook with the standard pagan path does not always flow naturally. When a goth first experiences the pagan scene they may feel they do not quite fit in entirely. Goths carry a darkness which is not evil, but rather melancholy and mysterious. This can be jarring when combined with the celebratory, tie-dyed outlook of the `average' neo-pagan.

The End of Paganism
"The ruin of Paganism, in the age of Rufinius, is perhaps the only example of the total extirpation of any ancient and popular superstition; and may therefore deserve to be considered, as a singular event in the history of the human mind." Gibbon, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (XXVIII) W hen Constantius II (the second son of Constantine I) visited Rome in AD 357, the Altar of Victory was ordered removed from the Senate House. Although returned by his successor Julian, it again was removed by Gratian in AD 382, this time at the instigation of Ambrose, bishop of Milan, who also persuaded the emperor to withdraw the state subsidies and prohibit the legacies and revenues that maintained many of the pagan cults, including endowment of the Vestal Virgins and college of pontiffs. The title of pontifex maximus , which had signified authority over state religion since the time of Julius Caesar, was renounced as well. These measures were protested by the pagan aristocracy, who feared that the loss of official recognition would threaten the legitimacy and efficacy of the cults. But a deputation of senators led by Symmachus, the leading orator of his day, was refused even an audience with the emperor. After Gratian's death, there was another petition, and in AD 384 the question again was put to his successor Valentinian II.

THE JULIAN SOCIETY
"
For zeal to do all that is in one's power is, in truth, a proof of piety." - Julian
The Julian Society is a non-denominational religious order dedicated to the advancement of Pagan religion. Our membership shares many different traditions of Pagan worship while remaining united through the common bond of the ideals championed by the Emperor Julian, the last Pagan Emperor of Rome. We continue the work which Julian began centuries ago; restoring Pagan religion so that it may regain its rightful place as a major world religious system.

In 360 A.D., the Emperor Julian became the last Pagan ruler of the Roman Empire. Known as "Julian the Apostate" because he had been raised a Christian but then later converted to Paganism, he worked to reestablish the worship of the ancient Goddesses and Gods and restore all forms of Pagan Religion. Julian's religious goal was simple and direct, to restore the honor and status which the ancient Pagan faiths had held since the beginning of time. He sought to reinstate noble virtues and purposes within all Pagan religion, to make Pagan teachings available to all, and to continue the rites and public worship of all ancient Pagan deities. Julian's aim was to rebuild and strengthen the various Pagan paths to insure their future survival.

Paganism
Paganism is a broad, eclectic modern religious movement that encompasses shamanistic, ecstatic, polytheistic, and magical religions. Most of the religions termed Pagan are characterized by nature-centered spirituality, honoring of pre-Christian deities, dynamic, personal belief systems, lack of institutionalization, a quest to develop the self, and acceptance and encouragement of diversity. Paganism is sometimes referred to as Neo-Paganism to emphasize its connections to as well as difference from pre-Christian religions. Paganism is a worldwide phenomenon and includes revived and updated ancient European practices and religions, feminist Goddess-worship, and religions inspired by science-fiction writings. For their inspiration, Pagans look to non-Abrahamic, ecstatic, and mystery religions of Europe as well as indigenous and magic-using traditions from around the world. Modern Paganism is interwoven with artistic, visionary, and libertarian traditions and emphasizes the free will of the individual. Many traditions celebrate rituals to mark transitions in the natural world (such as solstices, lunar phases, or a birth) as well as in a person's life (such as marriage or moving to a new home). While the largest segment of the Pagan population is white and middle class, Paganism cuts across all lines, whether racial, occupational, or class- or gender-based. Most Pagans, however, are avid readers with interests in ecology, creativity, and personal growth. Many come from the scientific, computer, and technical fields. Since it is not an organized movement, it is very difficult to determine the number of its practitioners, but it is estimated that there are perhaps 100,000 in the U.S. alone. Some have termed Paganism the fastest growing religion in the West.

5 September 2005 - 11:9:23: The Calm Before the Storm

So today is the last day before classes start. It's been a quiet morning - no hustle or bustle around the dorm, no crowds going by my window, and lower campus remains the ghost town that it usually remains in the summer months.
But all of that will change soon.
Come tomorrow morning, the walkways will be filled to the brim with students, quickly bustling their way through class filled days. I will be among them, trying to fight my way through crampt stairwells, and slow moving Freshmen. Ah yes, Freshmen... the slowest of the students. Just some advice, never try the far left stairwell in Hibbard during the first few months of the school year - it's a freshmen bottleneck, as many don't realize there are other stairwells in the building for some reason.

The most serious challenge for Christianity today isn't one of the other great religions of the world, such as Islam or Buddhism. Nor is it simple atheism, which has no depth, no mass appeal, no staying power. Rather, it's a religion most of us think is dead. That religion is paganism — and it is very much alive. Paganism is simply the natural gravity of the human spirit, the line of least resistance, religion in its fallen state. The “old” paganism came from the country. Indeed, the very word “paganism” comes from the Latin pagani, “from the fields” or “country-dwellers.” Country people were the last to be converted to Christianity during the Roman Empire, the last to abandon their ancestral roots in pre-Christian belief. Today, country people are the last to abandon Christianity for the “new” paganism, which flourishes in the cities. The old paganism was a far greater thing than the new. In fact, Chesterton brilliantly summarized the entire spiritual history of the world in this one sentence: “Paganism was the biggest thing in the world, and Christianity was bigger and everything since has been comparatively small.”

WARNING! Goddesses and Wicca worship Neo-paganism at its most deceptive form
Before you start, you shoul read the Plan . Done? Then you might want to start by reading this:
Wicca, or Witchcraft is the most popular expression of the religious movement known as Neo-Paganism, which, according to the Institute for the Study of American Religion, is the fastest growing religion in the United States. It practitioners are reviving ancient Pagan practices and beliefs of pre-Christian Europe and adapting them to contemporary life. The result is a religion that is both old and new, both "traditional" and creative. Its practitioners are reviving ancient Pagan practices and beliefs of pre-Christian Europe and adapting them to contemporary life. The result is a religion that is both old and new, both "traditional" and creative. (From the Manifesto of the Covenant of the Goddess).
Neo-paganism is arising in the world today. It is not as innocent as its adherents claim, on the contrary. It is as dangerous as when God prohibited the children of Israel to mingle with the pagans and their worship in the land of Canaan.
This page will discuss in a few words the rising tide of Wicca (Witchcraft - or white witchcraft), with the emphasis on Goddess worship. You can read through the page or take a quick look at the following chapters.

in Scotland
The Pagan Federation, founded in 1971, works to promote Pagans’ spiritual rights and to make Paganism accessible to anyone genuinely seeking this type of spirituality. The PF has succeeded in having Paganism recognised as a valid religion by the Scottish Office and the Home Office, and is working to increase numbers of Pagan religious visitors and chaplains in hospitals and prisons. It is the aim of the PF to enable people more easily to celebrate their weddings, funerals, child-namings and other rites of passage within a Pagan context. Other projects include strengthening inter-faith links, encouraging open seasonal celebratory rites, and supplying accurate information concerning Paganism (including the refutation of inaccurate and defamatory portrayals of Paganism) to the general public. Each autumn the PF is particularly active in educating the public about Hallowe’en, possibly the least understood of the ancient British festivals. At all times the Pagan Federation extends assistance to those seeking to explore a pagan spirituality and promotes factual accuracy and mutual tolerance among faiths.

Accident/Near-Miss Diary
After having read a lot of (seemingly) conflicting information about the dangers (or not) of cycling and the effacity (or not) of helmets and the carelessness (or not) of drivers and cyclists I have decided to keep my own diary of cycling incidents, including the conditions at the time. It's mainly meant to see if the dangers that I think are there are as important as the dangers that do affect me, or nearly do.
- Car on wrong side of road coming round corner in residential road - potential head-on collision - dry road, light sky/early evening dusky, bike lights on, reflective body-strap and reflective LED armbands on.
- Nearly came off bike at 14mph on trail skidding on cambered mud bank avoiding large puddle. Riding beyond my ability or having fun? Not sure. Could have been very messy, but probably not painful unless I landed very awkwardly, or landed on bike. As I'm unfit and inflexible, probably not sensible to ride like that quite yet.
- Turning right from t-junction into village High Street opposite recessed bus stop, bus didn't see me and came out of bus stop into my path. Not sure who had the right of way there! About 11am bright sunny day.
