There are some who find comfort in the shadows,
Who strive to comprehend the mysteries,
Who find solace in the silence of a winter night,
Who sing softly to the crone. We are the Dark Pagans, children of the Dark Mother
S o often darkness is associated with evil. Since the term evil has no place in a nature-based religion, we Pagans are forced to look beyond such stereotypes. Evil is a human term. It begins and ends with us. A tornado is not evil, yet it is destructive. Fire can be used to benefit life or destroy it. Nature is neither good nor evil. It simply is. It follows no moral code. Only humans, with our complicated set of emotions and intellect, can justify such categorizations. When Pagans anthropomorphisize nature into something good and loving, they deny its very all-encompassing nature. When the dark deities are shunned in fear of the unknown, we deny ourselves full understanding of all deities and what they have to offer. It is our nature to fear the unknown. We cling to archetypal forms representing the aspects of some great unknowable, encompassing force, which we cannot comprehend. We call them our deities. This is not wrong; It is in fact, necessary since we cannot grasp the "divine" or cosmic source otherwise. Some religions choose to see this source as one omnipotent being. However, accepting the existence of an all-good and just being dictates that there must then exist a counterpart that encompasses evil.

Hellenic Neo-Paganism
"We are all Greeks"
Many Neo-Pagans were awakened to the old gods by an early encounter with Greek mythology, yet now they follow other traditions. In this paper I will try to clarify several issues that may deter Neo-Pagans from the Hellenic path. A connection with the Earth is an essential part of Paganism, both Neo- and Paleo-, and thus many Neo-Pagans look to their ethnic roots as a source of spirituality, but I think that ethnicity can be construed too narrowly. It's a mistake to reject the Hellenic path simply because you're not of Greek descent. Hellenic culture is a major component of the substratum of all European culture. It is worth recalling that by 327 BCE Alexander had carried Hellenic culture nearly to the Ganges and to the north of the Himalayas (and, of course, brought Eastern culture back to Greece, for his goal was a multi-ethnic society). The conquest of Greece by Rome was complete by 146 BCE, but in its defeat Greek culture conquered the Romans. It then spread with the Roman Empire, which by 44 BCE included the North African coast and extended north to the English channel; by 67 CE it included the south of England. Therefore the Hellenic tradition has been a part of the culture of Europe (and beyond) for at least 2000 years. To the extent that European culture has become Western culture, and Western culture has become world culture, the Hellenic tradition is ubiquitous. As Shelley quite rightly said, "We are all Greeks" (Preface to "Hellas").

    Was Hegel Christian or Atheist?
    Paul E. Trejo
After Hegel's death there was a great clash of intellectuals which the Hegelian theologian David Strauss called the clash between "the Left Hegelians and the Right Hegelians." The Left Hegelians were atheists, led by the ex-minister Bruno Bauer and his famous follower, Karl Marx, and by the radical editor Arnold Ruge and the radical egoist whose real name was not Max Stirner. The Right Hegelians were Christian fundamentalists. They found Christian inspiration in Hegel's philosophy, and they condemned David Strauss' progressive New Testament critique, The Life of Jesus . Strauss also took his inspiration from Hegel. He showed how the earliest Christian communities altered the Gospels with their local traditions. Albert Schweitzer praised his book as epoch-making, and by today's standards the book is tame. But it was the 19th century death-knell for Hegelian scholarship. Strauss defended himself by accusing Hegel himself of ambiguity on the subject. Bruno Bauer was living evidence of this. Bauer was first the leader of the Right Hegelians, and led the damnation of David Strauss' theology of demythologization. After more years of reflection, however, Bauer turned coat and became the leader of the Left Hegelians. (In either role, Albert Schweitzer praised Bauer's scholarship as world class.) Scholars for generations have reviewed the arguments of the Left and Right Hegelians, and are still divided on the question: Was Hegel a Christian or an atheist?

    What is Neopaganism?
Neopagan religions are modern forms of ancient Pagan religions, which may have been evolving since ancient times, or may have been recreated in modern times. Neopagan religions are usually polytheistic, nature-oriented, non dogmatic, and oriented toward personal growth through direct interaction with the Gods and Goddesses.
    Why Hellenic Neopaganism?
Hellenic Neopagans worship the Gods and Goddesses of ancient Greece and Rome. Although some of us are Greek or of Greek descent, many of us come from other ethnic backgrounds, yet we consider ourselves Hellenic (or Graeco-Roman) Neopagans. The first reason is that Graeco-Roman culture is one of the foundations of Western culture and even of modern world culture; therefore from a cultural standpoint, as Shelley said, "We are all Greeks." The second reason is that in the early years of the Christian era, the term "Hellene" was used to refer to any Pagan, regardless of their ethnic background, so in this FAQ I will use "Hellenic Neopagan" to refer to a modern follower of any of the Greek or Roman traditions. (Some us refer to our religion by names such as Olympianism, Classical Neopaganism, etc.)

Well folks, this is the page that any and every pagan site 'must have'. Part of educating about paganism obviously should start with what paganism is, and also, what it is not. So for better or worse, here we will feature a variety of viewpoints on the subject of WHAT IS PAGANISM.
    1) WHAT IS PAGANISM? Stated simply: Paganism is an umbrella term for a myriad of religions that are not easily classified. In some places the term has been applied to any religion, pseudo-religion, or lifestyle of an alternative nature that has tied itself to a past civilization in some way. However, this definition does not come close to really defining what paganism is because there are over 2500 different religions that are classed as Pagan including religions that started out as part of many of the mainstream religions.
The word pagan comes from the Latin word paganus which has many times been loosely translated to mean 'country dweller'. Actually paganus was a noun derived from the word pagus which originally meant 'something stuck in the ground as a landmark'. The root

    89. From Jesus To Christ: Why Did Christianity Succeed?: The Collision With Paganism
We tend to think of Christianity over against paganism in the Roman empire but we have to be a little bit cautious about what we mean by paganism.

    var loc = "../../../";
    Wayne A. Meeks:

Woolsey Professor of Biblical Studies Yale University How would this rather unusual claim [of a resurrected Messiah] or message have fallen on the average pagan ear? That's the most difficult question of all. This is obviously an interpretation which begins within a Jewish framework, which is based upon Jewish scriptures ... which are understood within Jewish institutions and Jewish traditions. Now, the really difficult thing is, to explain that great jump that takes place when Christianity moves out of the villages of Palestine into the urban centers of the Eastern Roman provinces, and very quickly crosses the boundary between the local Jewish community, which doesn't respond terribly well to this message, to those outside, the ordinary members of these multi-cultural Greco-Roman cities, who don't have any concept of Messiah, couldn't be less interested in a King of the Jews, who find the notion of resurrection from the dead a very odd concept, at best. How did they make that transition, how did they transform their message to make sense of it to those people? One of the characteristics of the Roman Empire [in] this period from the end of the Republic, right on down to the decline of the Roman Empire, is that there is suddenly great freedom of movement, more so than any period before that and in some ways, more free that any period that will happen again, until the invention of the steamship. This means that in every city in those Eastern Roman provinces there will be a variety of people who have immigrated there from other places, so that you will have many ethnic groups who have had to adapt to a larger culture and they do this in two ways. One by assimilating to a pattern, which has been imposed upon this by things Greek and things Roman - the powers of culture and the powers of politics. And the other way is by trying to maintain their identity by importing things from their homelands, and those things which they import, which establish identity, are more often than not, a religio[n]...

    http://www.crystalinks.com/paganism.html
The words 'Paganism' and 'Pagan' come from the Latin 'paganus,' meaning 'country dweller. In simplest terms - Paganism is a religion of place, or a native religion, for example the Native American's religion is Pagan, Hinduism is a form of Paganism. All Pagan religions are characterized by a connection and reverence for nature, and are usually polytheistic i.e. have many Gods and/or Goddesses. Paganism is a religion of nature, in other words Pagans revere Nature. Pagans see the divine as immanent in the whole of life and the universe; in every tree, plant, animal and object, man and woman and in the dark side of life as much as in the light. Pagans live their lives attuned to the cycles of Nature, the seasons, life and death. Unlike the patriarchal religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) the divine is female as well as male and therefore there is a Goddess as well as a God. These deities are within us as well as without us (immanent); they are us. They are not simply substitutes for the Muslim or Judeo-Christian God. This is because the Gods of the major religions tend to be super-natural i.e. above nature whereas Pagan deities are natural, symbolizing aspects of nature or human nature. Having said that God and Goddess are split from the Great Spirit or Akashka which probably equates to the God of the patriarchal religions. The Goddess represents all that is female and the God represents all that is male. But because nature is seen as female the Goddess has a wider meaning. Often called Mother Earth or Gaia she is seen as the creatrix and sustainer of life, the mother of us all which makes all the creatures on the planet our siblings.

A Challenge to Pagans I understand that paganism is a growing religious force in the world today. Also, there are quite a number of forms of paganism - Druidism, Wicca, Witchcraft just to name a few. Perhaps you feel that your rituals and other spiritual activities will help to save the Earth from self-destruction. You may distrust Christianity for quite a few reasons. You can't stand the doctrine of eternal punishment, and you probably feel that most Monotheistic religions, especially Christianity, are a hindrance to spiritual development. Most pagans are polytheists (they acknowledge and worship more than one god or goddess). You probably believe that these divine powers are within you and you need to get into harmony with them. You may be a Nature-Worshipper of some form. Some Preliminaries 1. Points we may have in common. a. We believe in the reality of a spiritual world that exists now in parallel with the physical universe. Many churches are spiritually dead - emphasizing "club rules" and not a personal encounter with the divine. But more and more churches are coming alive and are learning what it means to have a relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has greater power than all the rest of the angels and demons combined. b. We believe that it is good for us to care for our environment. As a Christian, I believe that God gave us this world to look after and enjoy, but not to abuse. So I would sympathise with attempts to limit ecological destruction and the spread of pollution. In my view it is sinful to ruin the environment for personal or corporate profit. The Bible talks of God "destroying those who destroy the earth" (Rev. 11:18).

the Spirit Watch The Ancient Root Of Pagan Error - Part 1 of 3 by Donalyn H. Vaughn O ne thing all the false religions (be it Wicca, Hinduism, or even the pseudo-Christian groups like Unity, and Mormonism) have in common is a great and singular lie that their beliefs are based on. This falsehood has been the essential basis upon which spiritual deception has sought to ensnare the unwary with throughout history. This lie led man into rebellion against the revealed will of God in the Garden of Eden, as the Genesis account reveals. This rebellion became literally the first sinful act of mankind. And it was patterned after Satan's own presumptuous rebellion against his Creator, the first known defiance of God's will. What was this very first sin? Satan thought he could be God. This got him kicked out of heaven. What did Satan use to get Eve to eat from that tree in the garden? The same lie. He told her that she would not die, and that she would become like God: Genesis 3:1-6: 1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
