neo-paganism
Neo-paganisn has undergone an extensive revivial since the middle of the 20th century. As the role of the Christian church in the west has come under repeated intellectual attack and questioning, many people have looked towards pre-Christian folk roots for alternative expressions of spirituality. One of the biggest areas is Wicca, which is essentially a reinvention - instituted and popularised by Gerald Gardner - of the practice of witchcraft. It is from Gardner that all major Wiccan traditions are originally derivative. Gardner himself has been variously criticised, not least for highly romanticising the tradition away from its actual traditional roots. Regardless, Wicca itself continues to grow in popularity, especially in Europe and the USA, as an alternative route of worship of the Divine from mainstream Christianity. DAILY QUOTES SACRED VERSES LINKS Welcome to the Indian Paganism site This site has two main objectives - Firstly, to contribute towards the development of modern Pagan-Hindu Magickal traditions within the fields of contemporary Paganism and Magick. Secondly, to explore the thousands of years of various Pagan and Hindu beliefs, traditions and customs in a comparative context. There already exists a great degree of shared roots and similarity between Pagan and Hindu religions, such as those of Wicca and Tantrika. Today many modern eclectic Pagans, Witches and Magicians work with Hindu deities and various aspects of Hindu paths. There are also groups who are working in Pagan-Hindu Magickal systems. This site, and the coming book 'Indian Paganism', aim to help the continuing development of this movement by assisting in the growth of modern Pagan-Hindu Magickal traditions and practices. Click to subscribe to Indian Paganism Daily Quotes The Indian Paganism site also offers a free daily quote service which shares either a Pagan, Hindu, or Magickal quote each day. Quotes are drawn from a wide variety of quality sources and reflect the extensive philosophy and underlying unity which exist between Paganism and Hinduism. The main resource areas from which quotes are drawn are Wiccan, Witchcraft, Classical Pagan, Neo-Pagan, Tantrik, Vedic, and Ceremonial Magick. A few of the authors and figures quoted include Starhawk, Doreen Valiente, Stewart Farrar, Marcus Aurelius, Ramana Maharshi, Swami Sivananda, Bhagavan Nityanandaji, Sri Ramakrishna, Aliester Crowley, Dion Fortune, and Eliphis Levi.

What is a "Pagan?"
Everybody has their favorite definition of the word "Pagan." Most people are convinced that their meaning is the correct one. But no consensus exists, even within a single faith tradition or religion as to what a pagan is.
Origin of the term:
There is general agreement that the word " Pagan " comes from the Latin word " paganus. " Unfortunately, there is no consensus on the precise meaning of the word in the fifth century CE and before. There are three main interpretations. None has won general acceptance: Most modern Pagan sources interpret the word to have meant " rustic ," " hick ," or " country bumpkin " a pejorative term. The implication was that Christians used the term to ridicule country folk who tenaciously held on to what the Christians considered old-fashioned, outmoded Pagan beliefs. Those in the country were much slower in adopting the new religion of Christianity than were the city folks. They still followed the Greek state religion, Roman state religion, Mithraism, various mystery religions, etc., long after those in urban areas had converted. Some believe that in the early Roman Empire, "

The term " Neo-Paganism " was apparently coined by Tim Zell, editor of The Green Egg, a publication of the Church of all Worlds A Neopagan religion is a modern faith which has been recently reconstructed from beliefs, deities, symbols, practices and other elements of an ancient religion. For example, the Druidic religion is based on the faith and practices of the ancient Celtic professional class; followers of Asatru adhere to the ancient, pre-Christian Norse religion; Wiccans also trace their roots back to the pre-Celtic era in Europe. Other Neo-pagans follow Roman, Greek, Egyptian or similar ancient tradition. Many Wiccans and other Neopagans refer to themselves simply as "

35. Iron Crosses: Pre-Christian History And Beliefs
A look at the history and folklore of Lithuania, one of three Baltic countries. Lithuania was the last pagan country in Europe to accept Christianity. This site is devoted to examining the history, folktales and beliefs of Pagan Lithuania. Topics such as Perkunas, Gabija, Zemyna, Saule and the various Grand Dukes (Mindaugas, Gediminas, Jogaila, Vytautas) are explored, along with the elements of Lithuanian paganism chthonic and indo-european.
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/3503
ithuania, on the shore of the Baltic Sea, has had a very intriguing role in European development, in various ways: militarily, economically, politically and religiously. It was the last country to accept Christianity, in 1387, as part of the marriage agreement between Grand Duke Jogaila and Jadwiga, Queen of Poland. The new faith lived in conjunction with the old nature-based beliefs; and well into the twentieth century in certain regions. odern Lithuanians are an unusual amalgam of Catholicism and a fierce pride in their pagan past. Many will proudly state that Grand Duke Jogaila and his cousin Grand Duke Vytautas the Great defeated the Crusading Teutonic Order. The language was nearly wiped out when it was under the auspices of the Russian Empire But it endured, and to this day Lithuanians are fiercely protective of both their language and of their culture. This website is dedicated to exploring the history, culture, folktales, and folk beliefs of this most colourful country. Table of Contents zemyna@geocities.com

Koljada
(Kohl-YAH-da) - The Winter Solstice.
Most agree that the word comes from the Roman word "calendae" which meant the first 10 days of any month. Some, however, believe the word is derived from the word "Kolo" or wheel - much like the word "Yule" is an Anglo-Saxon word for wheel. The holiday's original name may have been "Ovsen". The holiday was filled with revelry. Processions of people masked like animals and cross-dressers roamed the village. Often they were accompanied by a "goat"- a goat's head, either real or (usually) made and stuffed on a stick. The person holding the "goat" would be covered by a blanket to play the part. Sometimes a child on horseback - symbol of the reborn sun - would accompany them; the horse was often played by two young men in horses costumes. One of the wenders would carry a spinning solar symbol, internally lit by a candle, on a stick. Later, after Christianity entered the scene, the spinning "sun" became a star.
This unusual group would stop and sing Koljada songs from house to house. These songs usually included invocations to "Koljada", the god or goddess of the holiday, praises and good wishes, requests for handouts and threats for refusal. The handouts, also called "koljada", usually took the form of little pastries or "korovki" shaped like cows or goats. The were sometimes just in the shape of the animals head, but often were described as having "horns and tails and everything." The korovki were traditionally baked by the old people in the house, the grandmothers and grandfathers.

Current Phase of the Moon Neopaganism covers a wide range of belief systems which have emerged in the past 50 years, primarily in the UK, Europe, and the United States. This includes the better known Wicca, which is a synthesis of traditions from the British Isles, as well as many less visible groups which draw inspiration from other parts of the world. Based on folk-lore, traditional spiritual practices, anthropology, and a synthesis of esoteric systems, Neopaganism does not have any sacred texts of the same vintage as other religions, although unverifiable claims have been made in a couple of cases (e.g. Aradia , and The Gardnerian Book of Shadows Rather, the books presented here are source texts of Neopaganism, and other books which deal with related topics. Many of these books contain outdated or speculative material, and some of the texts here are the product of the Renaissance witch hunters. As a whole, the books here are of historical importance rather than a roadmap to modern pagan practice, and shouldn't be construed as such. As always, we encourage readers to think critically. Descriptions of contemporary Neopagan practice and beliefs can be found in the Internet Book of Shadows section of this site.
