The Jewish Bin Ladens? Ultra-Orthodox Jews and the State of Israel
print-friendly version Comments (4) TrackBack (2) What Shall I Do With This People? Jews and the Fractious Politics of Judaism By Milton Viorst, Simon and Schuster, 2002, 287 pp. Review by Pat McDonnell Twair “After 2,000 years of strenuous survival in exile, it would be a grim irony if homecoming is remembered by history not as the seed of the Jews’ redemption but of their self-destruction.” These final words in Milton Viorst’s latest book, What Shall I Do With This People? sums up his exhaustive study of Judaism and the conflicting ideologies within this faith that could lead to civil war or worse in Israel.

Orthodox Judaism and Jewish-Christian Dialogue Rabbi David Rosen David Rosen is the International Director for Interfaith Affairs of the American Jewish Committee. Previously, he was director of the Anti-Defamation League's Jerusalem office and the Chief Rabbi of Ireland. In recent decades a concept that was historically more suited to Christianity than the critical tradition of rabbinic Judaism, has become commonplace within the Orthodox Jewish community – namely the idea of “da’at Torah”, indicative of an ex cathedra authority of Torah scholars, not only impervious to verification or analysis but even viewing the latter as a form of impiety. Paradoxically this virus has even infected modern Orthodoxy or centrist Orthodoxy (as some prefer to describe it) which in the past had prided itself on its greater intellectual rigor. A striking example of this is in the United States where the person of the late Rabbi J. B. Soloveitchik has acquired almost iconic stature, especially since the institution with which he was so closely identified, Yeshivah University, is the main single

Short article on the religious basis of opposition to Zionism within ultraorthodox judaism.

Orthodox Anti-Zionism
Rabbi Amram Blau Until the Nazi Holocaust, much of the Orthodoxy was antagonistic to the Zionist aspiration of establishing a national home for the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. In large measure this opposition was less to Zionism itself than to the Zionists, for most of the Zionist activists were secularists who rejected the traditional authority of the Rabbis in favour of "foreign" ideologies such as socialism and nationalism. Zionism constituted a serious threat to the traditional religious power structure. The issue was felt more urgently in Palestine itself, where the "old Yishuv " (settlement) A Scene from the "Old Yishuv lived unproductively off the donations of Diaspora Jews, whereas the Zionist settlers were calling for the Jews to be self-supporting and to involve themselves in economically productive manual labour. As a theological justification for their position, they cite various Rabbinic traditions that forbid the hastening of the Redemption. The most intransigent and extreme of the Orthodox anti-Zionist parties is the Naturei Karta movement, a small but vocal organization that broke off from

Orthodox, Conservative, Reform Hundreds of Jews affiliated with the reform and conservative movements, have asked Ahavat Israel about our position in regards to the Conservative and Reform movements, and their effort to establish themselves in Israel. They want to know: Is there a place for conservative and reform Jews in Ahavat Israel? The best way to answer this question, is to understand what the conservative and reform movements see as their mission and what are their objectives and beliefs.
Reform Judaism
The International Rabbinic Association of Reform Judaism
Declaration of Principles 1885 Pittsburgh Conference

These are the foundation and basic beliefs of the reform movement: 1. We recognize in every religion an attempt to grasp the Infinite, and in every mode, source or book of revelation held sacred in any religious system the consciousness of the indwelling of G-d in man. 2. The Bible reflects the primitive ideas of its own age , and at times clothing its conception of divine Providence and Justice dealing with men in miraculous narratives.

R. Nosson Slifkin, Mysterious Creatures buy them now The question we will address here is not whether there are merits to the theory of evolution, or whether it is appropriate for an Orthodox Jew to adopt that theory. We will only discuss whether it is consistent with Orthodox beliefs, whether someone who believes in the theory of evolution is still within the bounds of Orthodoxy. As before, we will be making the case that even though there is debate on this matter, this is a matter of contemporary debate with scholars on both sides of the issue. For our purposes, we need only demonstrate that there are respected rabbis who adopt or do not object to the theory of evolution. Over 130 years ago, R. Samson Raphael Hirsch offered his view on this matter. This is of great significance because R. Hirsch was a leader of the opposition to non-Orthodox movements and was very open and direct in his labeling of people and ideas as unacceptable (see volume 5 of his

”This is not true!! Liars!! How can you even SAY THAT?! You make my heart cry!”
That’s how I first interacted with Islam (before then I had spent a good month and a half looking into Islamic websites, feeling like a traitor as I marvelled at the peaceful logic). I read that Muslims think that Jews eat pork, and that they perform unmentionable abuse to baby boys as they circumcise them. Immediately, as a well-trained media controller from a renowned Jewish religious youth movement, I contacted the source of these “lies” I had read. Eloquently yet passionately, I refuted his claim and asked him for references to the immoral teachings he was spreading, adding what a “Chillul Hashem” (disgrace to God) he was to the Jewish People. Within days, I got a reply, as eloquent and well-mannered as the one I had sent out. It clearly stated where in the Talmud (Rabbinical commentary) and Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish Law, lit. “Set Table”) I could find the sources for his “accusations”, and a polite invitation to confirm it with my local Rav (Rabbi). I did. And as I had proudly marched to his office, thinking he would tell me that the accusations were just
