For the last two thousand years, the Christian Church has held certain beliefs to be vital to one's faith. While there is some doctrinal disagreement within the three branches of Christendom -Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant- there is a general agreement among them as to the essentials of the faith. Whatever disagreement the church may have among its branches, it is insignificant compared to the heretical non-Christian beliefs of the cults. We offer this section as a yardstick to compare the errant beliefs of the cults.
The Doctrine of Authority
When it comes to the matter of final authority there is agreement among the major branches of Christianity with regard to the divine inspiration of the Old and New Testaments. However, the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox branches of the church go somewhat beyond the Bible as to their source of authority.
Roman Catholic The historic Roman Catholic Church accepts the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God. They also accept the Apocrypha as being inspired of God. Further, they consider church tradition just as authoritative as the Scriptures. (In a previous work, we have dealt with reasons why we do not accept the Apocrypha as sacred Scripture Answers, Here's Life Publishers, 1980, pp. 36-38.)

Orthodox Christianity is the life in faith of the Orthodox Church , inseparable from that concrete, historic community and encompassing its entire way of life. The Orthodox Christian faith is that faith "handed once to the saints" ( Jude 3), passed on in Holy Tradition to the apostles by Jesus Christ , and then handed down from one generation to the next, without addition or subtraction.

God
The Holy Trinity Main article: Holy Trinity Holy Trinity , the one God. Following the Holy Scriptures and the Church Fathers , the Church believes that the Trinity is three divine persons ( hypostases ) who share one essence ( ousia ). It is paradoxical to believe thus, but that is how God has revealed himself. All three persons are consubstantial with each other, that is, they are of one essence ( homoousios ) and coeternal. There never was a time when any of the persons of the Trinity did not exist. God is beyond and before time and yet acts within time, moving and speaking within history.

Transcript of Our Mission on the Radio
As I mentioned earlier, Father David spoke about our mission on the Come Receive the Light Radio program
Announcer: Reverend David Rucker is the priest in charge at a relatively new church planted just outside Lexington, Kentucky in Nicholasville and, as the directions on their website say, only a couple of blocks from the Dairy Queen. [chuckles] Sounds nice to me. Church growth is a primary emphasis for the Orthodox church in the twenty-first century and Father Rucker shared his passion for expanding the church in a phone conversation recently with Emmy.
Host Emmy Louvaris: What was the motivation for planting an Orthodox church in Nicholasville, Kentucky?
Father David: plan on planting that first OCA parish in Kentucky. The work here was a surprise to us. I think it was the fruit of what God was doing in our own personal lives. We were on a pilgrimage and we found out where we were going and then we stubbornly stuck to it and others seemed to appear almost out of nowhere who decided that they wanted to go there too. The Orthodox church is to us the last hope for Americans who hunger for classical Christianity in all of its power and all of its fullness. I told him that this was the church of the apostles and it went all the back to the book of Acts.

User comment on article: A Christian Boom
Submitted by Karen Silver November 26, 2002 at I agree with you that there is a basic disconnect between the more liberal Northern Christianity and the more "doctrinal" and "orthodox" Christianity of the South. This is true, not only in the US, but in the world as well. The Anglicanism of Africa is nothing like that of Europe or the Episcopal Church in the US. The Catholicism of the barrio is not the Catholicism of the US, or even the more intensely "Irish" church of the US. Even the Southern Baptists who live up North are less doctrinaire than those in Alabama.
I think the schism, when it occurs, will be more de facto (it already is that) than de jure.

Foreword from the webmaster of A conservative blog for peace Glory to Jesus Christ. George Harrison, one of my favourite popular musicians and a follower of the Hare Krishna offshoot of Hinduism, wrote in his 1970s song ‘Awaiting On You All’, ‘chant to the names of the Lord and you’ll be free’, referring to Krishna. (I also like ‘My Sweet Lord’, in which he actually chants some of Krishna’s many names.) It seems other Western converts to Asian religions have found that once they have known God the Son, Jesus, the Messiah, only one Lord whose name they chanted made them free. Subject: Re: Buddhist Converts From: strannik@strannik.com I am one of at least 8 people that I know who have become Orthodox Christians after having been Tibetan (usually Nyingmapa) or Zen Buddhists. There is a good possibility that there will soon be a book with the stories of such people, and how their conversion took place. I can offer you a few sample perceptions that I have developed on the way as to why Orthodox Christianity makes sense to Buddhists: • Buddhism has always been primarily monastic and ascetic in nature, with an emphasis on spiritual practice and development more than just mental assent to a list of truths. There is an organic unity between understanding of precepts and the quality of practice in Buddhism that serves well when learning about Orthodoxy.

Orthodox Christianity typically comprises those Christian traditions which are centered in eastern philosophy, as opposed to those traditions centered in the west. These groups include those under the following pages:
    • Eastern Orthodoxy is a Christian body whose adherents are largely based in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, with a growing presence in the western world. It claims to be the original Christian church founded by Christ and the Apostles, and traces its lineage back to the early church through the process of Apostolic Succession. Eastern Orthodox distinctives include the Divine Liturgy, Mysteries, organization into self-governing jurisdictions, and an emphasis on the preservation of Tradition, which it holds to be Apostolic in nature. Oriental Orthodoxy refers to the churches of Eastern Christian traditions that keep the faith of only the first three ecumenical councils of the undivided Church - the First Council of Nicaea, the First Council of Constantinople and the Council of Ephesus - and rejected the dogmatic definitions of the Council of Chalcedon. Hence, these Churches are also called Old Oriental Churches.

ON BECOMING AND REMAINING AN ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN A Talk given at the Orthodox Pilgrimage to Felixstowe in August 2001
    INTRODUCTION
We sometimes hear people talking about how they came to join the Orthodox Church. Although each story is interesting and may even be extraordinary, I think that the stories of how people remained faithful Orthodox Christians despite temptations may be more helpful. As it is written in the Gospels: 'In your patience possess ye your souls'. Moreover, I have called this talk not, 'On Joining the Orthodox Church', but, 'On Becoming and Remaining an Orthodox Christian'. For joining the Orthodox Church or becoming a member of the Orthodox Church, which is concerned with external changes, is not at all the same as 'Becoming an Orthodox Christian', which is all about internal changes. And remaining an Orthodox Christian is even more important, which is why I have devoted three times as much time to it here as to becoming an Orthodox Christian.
ON BECOMING ORTHODOX CONVERSION AND INTEGRATION Let us define our terms by talking of a number of words which are used in this context. First, there is the useless phrase 'born Orthodox'. This does not exist. Nobody is 'born Orthodox', we are all born pagans. That is why we first exorcise and then baptise. More acceptable are the terms, 'born to an Orthodox family' and 'cradle Orthodox'. It is interesting that people who condescendingly use terms such as 'born Orthodox' call the children of 'converts', 'converts'. In fact of course in their incorrect language, the children of 'converts' are 'born Orthodox'!

    The Spread of Orthodox Christianity
By the fourth century A.D., under the Emperor Constantine the Great, Christianity as a religion became tolerated and legal-keeping in mind that since apostolic times the Church was persecuted. By the fifth century, Orthodox Christianity became so widespread that it became the only religion recognized by the Roman government. The great centers of Orthodox Christianity were Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem. The bishops of these great cities and their surrounding regions governed the entire Church for the most part. For this reason, they were given honorary titles such as: Pope, Patriarch, Archbishop or Metropolitan, depending on the size of their flock or importance of their geographic or historic domain. All bishops were/are equal whether they preside over a small region or great city. No bishop may interfere within the jurisdiction of another bishop unless it is proven by a council of bishops that he has fallen into heresy.
