Orthodox Christianity and Ethics
Article from OED Book / October 7, 1995 According to SVS "oral tradition" Fr Georges Florovsky would begin his lectures in Christian Ethics with the sentence: "For Orthodox Christians there is no such thing as Christian Ethics." Having hopefully caught the attention of his students with this opening, he would proceed to make his points. Fr Florovsky claimed, we are told, that human behavior is rooted in a person’s relationship with God. Human beings act according to their personal knowledge, faith, experience, maturity, conditions, commitment and community —- for all of which they become, at some point, fully responsible. Ethical behavior, in this perspective, is never simply the application of formal principles or rules. Orthodox Christians accept certain rules of behavior as normative and binding not because they consider them as universally applicable to human beings regardless of their beliefs and conditions, but because they believe them to be commanded by the living God who acts in their lives and to whom they are indebted and responsible. And since Christians are factually in different stages of belief, understanding, commitment and spiritual growth, their behavior will differ in different times and conditions (see Lk 12:47-48, Jn 13:17, Rom 2, Jas 4:17).
A Covenant Relationship
Although Christian ethics in this understanding is not a system of morality based on principles to which all reasonable, good-willed adults should voluntarily assent, a conviction that all human beings are made in God’s image and have God’s law "written on their hearts" (see Rom 2). But, as Dostoevsky strongly testifies, the chances for widespread agreement on such natural foundations, given human freedom, passion and sin, are virtually non-existent; and a compelling case might be made that if there is no God and eternal life, it is reasonable for people to do whatever they want—even to steal, murder and rape —- since nothing ultimately matters and all passes into oblivion.

Eastern Orthodox Christianity: A Chronology
301: The Kingdom of Armenia becomes the first state to adopt Christianity as its official religion. 313: Emperor Constantine issues the Edict of Milan, legalizing Christianity in the Roman Empire. 325: Constantine calls the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea to condemn the Arian heresy, which had taught that the Son was inferior to the Father. 330: Constantine dedicates the city of Byzantium as the eastern capital of the Empire or "New Rome," renaming it Constantinople after himself. 381: The Second Ecumenical Council at Constantinople publishes the text of the Nicene Creed. 431: The Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus condemns the Nestorian heresy and approves the veneration of the Virgin Mary as Theotokos (God-Bearer or Mother of God). The Nestorians go into exile in the Persian Empire and become the Assyrian Orthodox Church of the East. 451: The Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon condemns the Monophysite heresy and affirms that Christ had both a divine and a human nature. The Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, and Syrian Orthodox Churches would remain Monophysite; the Greek Orthodox church and the Western church adopted the Chalcedonian or Dyophysite position. This Council also gives Constantinople equal standing with "Old" Rome. 529: Byzantine Emperor Justinian closes the pagan Philosophical Academy in Athens.

About Orthodox Christianity The Orthodox Christian Church was born on Pentecost in AD 33 with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles (see Acts 2:2-4). Through the missionary labors and martyric witness of countless men and women, and through the unbroken handing-down of the pure apostolic faith, it spread to every corner of the world: first the Near East, then Europe, Africa, and Asia. Orthodoxy was planted in North America in the late 18th century by monastic missionaries from Russia. Today the worldwide Orthodox Church has more than 225 million members. Each national Church (Russian, Greek, Serbian, etc.) is independent and self-administering, but is united in faith and sacraments with all the others. Some five million Orthodox from diverse ethnic backgrounds now live in the United States and Canada. Definition:
The oldest division in Christianity is between the Western Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Eastern Orthodox church (which constitutes the second largest Christian denomination in the world, after Roman Catholicism) is a union of independent churches. Each is autocephalous, which means that each is lead by its own head bishop. These Eastern Orthodox churches share a common faith, common principles and organization, and a common liturgical tradition. The patriarch in Constantinople is analogous to the pope in that he represents the Eastern Orthodox Church to the world, but he does not now nor has he ever possessed the authority of the popes. He does not have any administrative powers beyond his own territory (patriarchate) and he does not claim infallibility. Eastern Orthodox doctrine was established by seven ecumenical councils which held between 325 and 787 and amended by other councils in the late Byzantine period. The Great Schism between the West and East was a long time in coming. The pope in the West asserted primacy because it was in Rome that St. Peter was buried - an "apostolic" primacy. The patriarch in Constantinople asserted primacy based on the fact that it was there that the seat of Roman government now existed - a "pragmatic" primacy. For a long time, tensions between the two were resolved in peacefully in councils - for example, the Iconoclastic Controversy.

Eastern Orthodoxy is the large body of Christians who follow the faith and practices that were defined by the first seven ecumenical councils. The word orthodox (''right believing'') has traditionally been used, in the Greek-speaking Christian world, to designate communities, or individuals, who preserved the true faith (as defined by those councils), as opposed to those who were declared heretical. The official designation of the church in Eastern Orthodox liturgical or canonical texts is ''the Orthodox Catholic Church.'' Because of the historical links of Eastern Orthodoxy with the Eastern Roman Empire and Byzantium (Constantinople), however, in English usage it is referred to as the ''Eastern'' or ''Greek Orthodox'' Church. These terms are sometimes misleading, especially when applied to Russian or Slavic churches and to the Orthodox communities in western Europe and America. It should also be noted that there are Monophysitic churches (holding that after Incarnation Jesus had only a divine, and not a human and divine, nature) that have adopted the term orthodox as part of their names. What is Orthodox Christianity?
Christ Pantocrator From St. Catherine's Monastery, Mount Sinai, Egypt Orthodoxy is that form of Christianity which gives right glory or right worship to God the Holy Trinity. Orthodoxy is the Christian Church, in succession to the Patriarchs, Prophets, and Priests of the Old Testament, which was founded by our Lord Jesus Christ when He Ordained His Apostles and sent the Holy Spirit upon the faithful gathered in Jerusalem at Pentecost. The followers of the Way were first called Christians at Antioch; and the Christians were first called Catholics in a letter of St. Ignatius of Antioch in about the year AD 98. The Orthodox are the original Christians, the first Catholics, the Church of the Apostles, and the Community of the New Testament. The Western Churches, including that of Rome, were part of the unity of Orthodoxy through the whole of the first 1,000 years. Rome only separated from the unity of the church by making extraordinary claims for the earthly powers of her patriarch (Pope) at the beginning of the 11th century and completed the break with the Orthodox by the 13th century. Romanides I have been asked to make some remarks at this point on Religious Freedom from an Orthodox point of view. I will preface the theological portion of my statement with some observations on current Orthodox concerns about Religious Freedom. I Of the 150 million Orthodox Christians throughout the world today, the great majority are behind the Iron Curtain. Many millions of these people have lived through several decades of persecution and are now enjoying what seems to be precarious toleration. Several million Orthodox have survived the social and religious disabilities imposed upon them by Islamic conquests. The few million who are today within the Islamic world enjoy a ghetto-type toleration not very different fronI that of old. In at least one modern and supposedly liberal Islamic state the Orthodox population has in receut years undergone one more persecution and is now living in a state of terror. In one European country the Orthodox Church is the state religion and in another predominantly Lutheran nation the small but dynamic Orthodox minority enjoys the status of a state church. The 500,000 citizens of the newly democratic Cyprus have elected as their first president an Orthodox Archbishop and in spite of their insignificant numbers are members of the United Nations with a vote equal to that of India.

The Future of Orthodox Theology
A unique opportunity in Cambridge
Imagine a world where Orthodox Christianity has regained its voice after centuries of isolation, persecution, nationalism and turmoil.
By establishing an international centre for Orthodox education and scholarship in Cambridge, we now have the opportunity to help make this possible.
The Witness of Orthodox Theology
For Orthodox Christians, studying theology does not only engage the rational mind. Theology is about knowledge of God passed down to us through the Orthodox Tradition from generation to generation. It is about experience of God through the life of the Church. It is a vision that satisfies the hunger of the human heart and inspires us to love one another as the Lord loves us. Remaining true to our own experience as a Church while being willing and eager to engage in today's social, cultural, religious and ethical debates is the task of Orthodox witness.
Cambridge
Britain has been at the forefront of western development for centuries and continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the world's future. It is a multi-religious, multi-cultural country, a melting pot of ideas at the heart of Europe. It is a bridge between the emerging new Europe and the United States. It is the mother of the universal language through which any message can be communicated with ease, like the Greek language during the first years of Christianity. When St. Paul needed to challenge Greek philosophy in order to overturn the established thinking of the time, he chose Athens. If St. Paul were asked to engage with and challenge the intellectual world of today, he might very well choose Cambridge.

Orthodox Christianity typically comprises those Christian traditions which are centered in eastern philosophy, as opposed to those traditions centered in the west. These groups include those under the following pages:
  • Eastern Orthodoxy is a Christian body whose adherents are largely based in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, with a growing presence in the western world. It claims to be the original Christian church founded by Christ and the Apostles, and traces its lineage back to the early church through the process of Apostolic Succession. Eastern Orthodox distinctives include the Divine Liturgy, Mysteries, organization into self-governing jurisdictions, and an emphasis on the preservation of Tradition, which it holds to be Apostolic in nature.
