23. Great Theosophists--Ammonius Saccas (9 Of 29)
Article from the journal Theosophy, published in 1936, presenting this figure in the context of the struggle between orthodox christianity and Alexandrian eclecticism.

GREAT THEOSOPHISTS
A MMONIUS S ACCAS
The Church now found herself in conflict not only with the religious ideas of her self-chosen adversaries, but with their scientific views as well. The orthodox Church Fathers declared that God made the world out of nothing. The Gnostic Fathers denied this unphilosophical assertion and held that the universe was the result of a gradual unfoldment from within without. Christianity asserted that the earth was flat, and against this theory was pitted that of Aristarchos of Samos, who had been a member of the Alexandrian School in 280 B.C., and had taught the sphericity of the earth as Pythagoras had taught it before him. In the fourth century, Science and orthodox Christianity came to a deadlock, the bone of contention being the idea of the sphericity of the earth. Criticizing the ancient theory of the roundness of the earth, Lactantius, one of the most polished rhetoricians among the Christians, indignantly inquired: "Is it possible that men can be so absurd as to believe that the crops and trees on the other side of the earth hang downward, and that men have their feet higher than their heads? If you ask them how they defend those monstrosities, how things do not fall away from the earth on that side, they reply that the nature of things is such that heavy bodies tend toward the center, like the spokes of a wheel, while light bodies tend from the center to the heavens on all sides. Now I am really at a loss what to say of those, who, when they have once gone wrong, steadily persevere in their folly and defend one absurd opinion by another."

August 25, 7513 * September 07, 2005 Welcome to OrthodoxChristianity.net, your home on the internet for Orthodox Christianity! Since our humble beginnings on May 12, 2002, we have continued to grow and expand. The forum has always been the major feature of our site, and it will continue to be an important tool for the propagation of Orthodoxy. For some time, however, we have had a desire to expand the other resources that have been available on this site such as articles, and also add new ones. This revised version of the front page, version 3.0, is the first step in this process of renewal. As technology has increased, so has our ability to bring you new features and content. Anastasios recently resigned from active moderatorship on the forum so that he could increase the time he spends on content development. This was possible thanks to the new moderators who volunteered for the position. Robert continues to improve the coding that exists behind the scenes to make the forum work. Soon we will be adopting a comprehensive content- management database system called Mambo Server, which will allow us to keep the site functioning as we grow in this area.

One of the prayers we pray each week is for a “right answer before the awesome judgment seat of Christ.” Why do we pray this? Are we afraid God is somehow capricious and we have to “stay on His good side?” Of course not. God isn’t easily offended like many of us. No, we pray this because there will come a day when our deepest motives and thoughts will be made known to us in the light of His undiminished glory and love.

http://www.kosovo.com/orthodoxy.html
INTRODUCTION
gr. catholicos = universal The Orthodox Church is a family of "autocephalous" (self governing) churches, with the Ecumenical (= universal) Patriarch of Constantinople holding titular or honorary primacy as primus inter pares (the first among equals). The Orthodox Church is not a centralised organization headed by a pontiff. The unity of the Church is rather manifested in common faith and communion in the sacraments and no one but Christ himself is the real head of the Church. The number of autocephalous churches has varied in history. Today there are many: the Church of Constantinople (Istanbul), the Church of Alexandria (Egypt), the Church of Antioch (with headquarters in Damascus, Syria), and the Churches of Jerusalem, Russia, Serbia , Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Cyprus, Greece, Poland, Albania and America There are also "autonomous" churches (retaining a token canonical dependence upon a mother see) in Czech and Slovak republic, Sinai, Crete, Finland, Japan, China and Ukraine. In addition there is also a large Orthodox Diaspora scattered all over the world and administratively divided among various jurisdictions (dependencies of the above mentioned autocephalous churches). The first nine autocephalous churches are headed by patriarchs , the others by archbishops or metropolitans. These titles are strictly honorary as all bishops are completely equal in the power granted to them by the Holy Spirit.

Related Articles Saint Cyprian of Carthage developed with fearless consistency a doctrine of the complete absence of Grace in every sect which had separated itself from the True Church. His doctrine is one of the basic foundation blocks of Orthodox ecclesiology and it stands in direct opposition to the presuppositions of the ecumenical movement. Moreover, his warnings about the enemies of the Church have traditionally guided Orthodox in their response to those outside Her fold: Not only must we beware of what is open and manifest, but also what deceives by the craft of subtle fraud. And what can be more crafty, or what more subtle, than for this enemy...to devise a new fraud, and under the very title of the Christian name to deceive the incautious. [139]

Orthodox Christianity is a generalized reference to the Eastern traditions of Christianity, as opposed to the Western traditions which descend from the Roman Catholic Church Eastern Orthodoxy is a Christian body whose adherents are largely based in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, with a growing presence in the western world. It claims to be the original Christian church founded by Christ and the Apostles, and traces its lineage back to the early church through the process of Apostolic Succession . A former speaker of the House of Representatives once said that "all politics is local." The Church is meant to be local as well. This webpage celebrates not simply our past, a 2,000 year-old tradition, but our future as one Orthodox community in Greater Cleveland. One Bishop, one city, one flock. The tradition of the Orthodox Church is to organize around cities such as Jerusalem, Rome, Ephesus, Athens, Corinth, Thessalonika, Ephesus, Phillipi, etc. The Bishop presided over the Eucharist, assisted by the presbyters (priests) and deacons, in the presence of the Christians of that city.
St. Ignatius had this in mind when he wrote: "Wherever the Bishop appears, the whole congregation is to be present, just as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the whole Church."

    Eastern Orthodoxy
The denomination now known as Orthodox Christianity Eastern Orthodoxy , or the Orthodox Church began as the eastern half of Christendom, the site of the former Byzantine Empire. Today, the highest concentration of Orthodox Christians remains in this area as well as in Russia, although Orthodoxy can be found in countries throughout the world. Approximately 225 million people worldwide are Orthodox Christians.
    History of Orthodoxy
Eastern Orthodoxy as a distinct branch of Christianity arose as a result of the first major divide in Christendom occurred in the 11th century with the "Great Schism" between East and West. The separation was not sudden or unexpected, however. For centuries there had been significant religious, cultural, and political differences between the Eastern and Western churches. Religiously, the two regions had different views on topics such as the use of images (icons), the nature of the Holy Spirit, and the date on which Easter should be celebrated.

    The Orthodox Church
Historically, the contemporary Orthodox church stands in direct continuity with the earliest Christian communities founded in regions of the Eastern Mediterranean by the apostles of Jesus. The Orthodox Christian Church, also sometimes called the Eastern Church, or the Greek Orthodox Church, claims to have preserved the original and apostolic Christian faith. Figures for its worldwide membership are estimated at around 200 million.
    Structure and Organization
    History
Historically, the contemporary Orthodox church stands in direct continuity with the earliest Christian communities founded in regions of the Eastern Mediterranean by the apostles of Jesus. The subsequent destinies of Christianity in those areas were shaped by the transfer (320) of the imperial capital from Rome to Constantinople by Constantine I. As a consequence, during the first 8 centuries of Christian history most major intellectual, cultural, and social developments in the Christian church also took place in that region; for example, all ecumenical councils of that period met either in Constantinople or in its vicinity. Missionaries, coming from Constantinople, converted the Slavs and other peoples of Eastern Europe to Christianity (Bulgaria, 864; Russia, 988) and translated Scripture and liturgical texts into the vernacular languages used in the various regions. Thus, the liturgy, traditions, and practices of the church of Constantinople were adopted by all and still provide the basic patterns and ethos of contemporary Orthodoxy.
