Whatever Happened to the Brethren?
Church history always fascinates me. This page I found gives a great introduction to the Brethren?
"The Open Brethren began in the 19th century with a group of British Evangelical Christians who wanted to return to the purity of the New Testament Church. Their desire was to base church practice on the Bible, rather than on the traditions of a particular denomination. Key early Brethren leaders included J N Darby, A. N. Groves, and George Muller. Some of the distinctives of the Brethren are:
-The autonomy of the local congregation
-Leadership by a body of lay elders; opposition to the idea of a paid professional ministry
-The Lord's Supper - a Communion service which is open for any (male) member in good standing to teach, give a

Welcome to brueder bewegung .de With a total membership of ca. 40,000, the Brethren Movement is one of the largest free-church movements in Germany. Being divided into several subgroups, however, some of them doing no public relations work at all, it doesn't play a very conspicuous role in the German church scene. The present website, which was founded in October 2003, is a private initiative trying to show the specific aims of the Brethren Movement and to reveal the roots of its various subgroups. It provides information about its historical development as well as about its present-day situation, taking into account all relevant groups. Most of the site is in German, but there are a number of English documents as well. They are listed below. You will also find many English entries on our international links and biography pages. Please note that this website is a neutral resource of information and not an official site of any German Brethren group. If you want to respond to our site, please write us an e-mail message.

Brethren Around the world, the Christian Brethren are, sometimes courageously, sometimes fearfully, re-examining their emphases and practices. One of the motivating reasons is the Brethren assemblies' almost universal decline in numbers and influence. 'We seem to be stagnating' is a common plaint by perceptive Brethren leaders. In 1990, for example, 250 Brethren leaders from many countries attended a summer school on 'The Christian Brethren Movement' at Regent College, Vancouver (a seminary with Brethren roots). The conference was told that in Britain, for example, the Brethren movement is in serious decline, with assemblies down to an average size of about 45 members, half of them are shrinking, with only a quarter growing. Most have few or no members under 40. In Australia all the major Christian denominations have larger churches than the largest Brethren assemblies. I grew up in a Sydney Brethren assembly. I am most grateful for their emphasis on the Bible, for the encouragement of most of the men to participate in preaching and leading services (I preached my first 'sermonette' at 13!), and, in particular, for the strong commitment to the Lord of those who led our fellowship. As a seminar-speaker in the church-at-large, I have been privileged to participate in about eight Brethren-sponsored conferences in the last two years.

    Brethren Groups
is a document that will acquaint you with a historical, non-theological outline of the several denominations using the word Brethren in their label, and hopefully give you an overview of how we all fit together. One common denominator which usually holds true for most Brethren groups is that each progenitive body originated in central Europe under the influence of Anabaptism or Pietism, during the Fifteenth to Eighteenth centuries. There are so many Christian denominations and sub-groups using the term Brethren, that questions frequently arise over their relationship with each other.
