Open Brethren
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Open Brethren (sometimes called Plymouth Brethren ) are a group of Protestant Christian churches that arose in the late . They originated in England and Ireland but have spread. In theology , they are fundamentalist , and in ecclesiastical polity they are presbyterian . The Open Brethren are "open" to anyone who gives verbal confirmation of faith, and this name is given to distinguish them from Exclusive Brethren , with whom they share historical roots. They are committed to missionary work and hold that the Holy Bible is the first authority in matters of faith. Each assembly (or congregation) is independent of the others in doctrinal matters, and yet, in practice, there is a high degree of communication and cooperation between them. edit

Plymouth Brethren
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Plymouth Brethren is a Christian religious movement that began in Ireland and England in the late and made prominent by John Nelson Darby Dr. Edward Cronin John Bellett , and Francis Hutchinson who felt that the established Church had become too involved with the secular state and abandoned many of the basic truths of Christianity. As the movement spread, a large group of adherents assembled in Plymouth by which is why Brethren are often called by that name. The term Darbyites has also been used. In the late , a difference over the "independence" of local meetings resulted in the first division, causing a distinction to be made between the Open Brethren mainly referred to by the name Plymouth Brethren , and the Exclusive Brethren . Darby and his followers saw the split as the result of the growth of ' clericalism ' and "grave error as to Christ's persona and sufferings".

UNITY COMPROMISED BY INTOLERANCE
by Dr Peter Lineham
In essence, the "brethren" found that their radical theory dispensed with devices which kept other denominations united, and soon they were full of schisms. F.C. Bland noted how many became disillusioned: they "never rightly estimated the difficulties to be met within an assembly of saints". (Truths for Today, (1886) p 46.) It began with disagreement about biblical views on certain doctrines. For soon some Brethren began to advocate that their basis of unity was complete agreement with one another or as they said, being faithful to the Scripture. Consequently the first significant dispute split the Brethren in half. In the great split of 1848 an accusation that Benjamin Wills Newton, the leader of the Plymouth assembly was a heretic, led Darby to refuse fellowship with anyone who had any contact with him and when the assembly at Bethesda chapel, Bristol announced that they would receive Christians from Plymouth who did not hold Newton's heresy, Darby cut off that assembly which then became the origin of the "Open Brethren" - open not because of their form of worship but because they were open to all Christians who loved the Lord. Similarly the word Exclusive meant those who wanted to exclude those who did not have the "light" on the truth which the Brethren had. The results of exclusivism are now obvious. They included the tendency to look for one leader who could define what was right hence, the Exclusive Brethren (after Darby) had a series of disastrous leaders - Raven and James Taylor Senior and Junior. There were also endless splits through the whole movement over minute points of doctrine. It is a tragedy to see the way in which a great movement was destroyed by Darbyism.

The Open Brethren
From The Brethren since 1870
by W.R. Dronsfeld The story of the Brethren, as told by Mr. A.Miller, closed in the 1870's and nearly a century has passed since then (1965). All the great movements of the Spirit of God have suffered much decline in the course of 100 years, and the Brethren have certainly been no exception. That which is committed to human responsibility always fails, but the Truth abides. The foundation of God stands sure, although iniquity may abound. In the following pages it is desired to trace briefly the history of the Brethren up to the present day. We will try to avoid paying unnecessary attention to details of controversies long dead, and rather concentrate on those matters, painful though many of them are, which have relevance to us in the present. A.Miller's History left the Brethren divided into two camps - the "Open" and the "Exclusive". A teacher of serious error might be refused by other meetings, but his local gathering could not be disowned. Hence those who were defiled by remaining in his meeting could still be received, providing they did not themselves hold or teach his views. The principle of independency must, of necessity, be in opposition to the scriptural principle that association with evil defiles. We do not desire, however, to be unduly critical of the Open Brethren, and must acknowledge that most of them are godly and faithful believers. We can thank God that they have not lost the Gospel, and their zeal in that direction has produced much fruit for the Lord. Large numbers of their missionaries have gone to other lands, pioneering independent meetings there. These brethren go out in dependence on the Lord and He does not fail them. The missionary magazine of the Open Brethren is called "Echoes of Service" and the Editors act as a channel for gifts. Consequently Open Brethren missionaries are often called "Echoes of Service" missionaries.

http://www.histable.com/open_brethren.htm
Open Brethren History and principles ...........The Open Brethren developed as an offshoot of the Plymouth Brethren in the late 1840s in England as a result of a controversy over the reception of a man who had started to teach false teachings about the person of Christ. Those assemblies who received believers who were associated with this man but did not actually hold to his false teaching were designated "open" by the original set of assemblies. Their "open" principle of receiving those who did not hold to false teaching but would not separate from those who did was viewed as "independency" from the the original fellowship of assemblies. Open Brethren reject the teachings of the man who propagated false doctrine in the 1840's. See Open Brethren by W.R. Dronsfeld. Reception ............Reception to the Lord's Supper is by verbal confession of faith. An visitor who is not known may be invited to remember the Lord. Letters of reception are not usually required. Open Brethren do not generaly take a separated position regarding the evangelical or the neo-evangelical community. Strengths Gospel work, evangelism and missionarry work.

STEM Publishing The writings of Hamilton Smith Open Brethren, Open Brethren, Their Origin, Principles, and Practice. Hamilton Smith, 1930. Introduction. The writer of the following paper has no quarrel with those known as Open Brethren. Their Gospel zeal and Missionary labours are well known and matters for thankfulness. That they meet on principles that the writer believes to be unscriptural is a matter that he regrets and if anything put forward in the following paper leads some to a clearer apprehension of scriptural principles it will be to him a cause of thankfulness. At the same time he deprecates anything that might have the appearance of an attack upon a company of the people of God. If then by chance this paper falls into the hands of any Open Brethren let such be assured that the fact that the writer sharply differs from them as to Scriptural principles of gathering would not, in itself, have called forth the following paper. One reason alone has led to this paper, namely, a few individuals have arisen amongst so-called Exclusive Brethren, who advocate and seek to put into practice independent principles akin to those of the Open Brethren. Such have arisen from time to time in days past. but, feeling it was inconsistent to continue with those whose principles they could no longer accept, they quietly withdrew and ceased to trouble their brethren.

The Exclusive Brethren
Within the U.K. most Brethren churches are 'Open Brethren'. There is, however, another, separate group, known as the 'Exclusive Brethren'. In the early days of the 'Plymouth Brethren' movement, the movement divided, because a member who had been excommunicated from one fellowship, was allowed to take communion in another. Those who believed this was unacceptable followed the lead of J N Darby and became known as 'Darbyites', and later as 'Exclusive Brethren'. The Exclusive Brethren meeting rooms have no windows. In most of their main beliefs, Exclusive Brethren are the same as other Christians. However, their emphasis on the verse 'Let every one who names the name of the Lord withdraw from iniquity' ( The Bible, 2 Timothy chapter 2 verse 19 ) has led them to live their lives as separately as possible. They believe everyone who does not follow their beliefs to be iniquitous, and therefore to be avoided as far as possible, and especially to be excluded from 'Breaking Bread' (Communion). These quotes are from the 'Darby' translation of the Bible, which they invariably use. This chart lists some of the differences between 'Exclusive' and 'Open' Brethren.
