An Open Letter to Open Brethren
Miles J. Stanford May 1992 My dear Brethren brother Thank you for your edifying letter; I value you, among other Brethren correspondents. Your request that I evaluate Mr. William MacDonald's book, True Discipleship , is appreciated, to which I hereby accede. In using the term "Brethren," I refer to those of you who hold to the "open" policy of Mr. Muller, rather than the "closed" one of Mr. Darby. Quotes from Mr. MacDonald's book are in italics , and the material is considered from the dispensational standpoint. My comments will not involve extensive Scripture references, in light of your thorough grasp of the Word. When one who rightly divides the Word of truth encounters Dr. John MacArthur's book to the Church entitled The Gospel According to Jesus , he should, by the title alone, realize immediately that the book is disqualifiedthat it is composed of anti-dispensational, Synoptic-centered Covenant theology. And what of Mr. MacDonald's title

Charismatics build a wax castle based on experiences. At the height of the emotional fire, their castle of experiences melts down on Biblical grounds. Charismatic chaos is spreading all over the world like a w ild fire.
WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO IMMIGRANTS TO THE UNITED STATES FROM INDIA The institutions of marriage and the family structure, and its foundations are being severely attacked in this modern and rapidly changing world from a material, intellectual, and even a spiritual aspect. Indeed, there is even a specific socialistic mind set, in vogue today, that suggests that it really "takes a village to raise a child". There is a need to study the concept of marriage, and the nature of a family, and determine how it interfaces with the modern world.

The Plymouth Brethren
The following page includes three papers written by Miles J. Stanford on the subject of the Plymouth Brethren (PBs)both the Open and Closed varieties. The Plymouth Brethren (often known throughout the world as Assemblies or Gospel Halls) are a small groups of Christians with a deep and rich history. The PBs should not be confused with any "Brethren" out of the Continental Free Church tradition, (such as the Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church, etc.), nor the Arminian Pentecostal Assemblies of God. For decades, the PBs reached out with their various needs to brother Miles Stanford by telephone and letter, yet often in pride and denial that they could be helped or ministered to by someone "outside" their Assembly system. However, it is often only an outsider who is in a position to evaluated conditions as they truly are, rather than how insiders represent them to be. Miles' burden was always that the PBs would discover the rich legacy of Pauline Dispensationalism established by the original founders of the movement. The green titles above and below are links to specific articles.

6. A Brief History Of The Plymouth Brethren Movement
History from the perspective of an open brethren writer.
http://pages.prodigy.net/sathi/ourhistory.html
A Brief Outline of the “Plymouth Brethren”: History, Doctrines, and Practices Dr. Sunny Ezhumattoor( John Mathew Thekkel) M.A.,Ph.d. The Plymouth Brethren movement was an independent work of the Holy Spirit, which is apparent from the fact that, in A. D. 1812 and 1820, letters were passed between a company of believers in Great Britain. The Brethren believe that they represent the true church established on the day of Pentecost. The two guiding principles of the movement were to be the breaking of bread every Lord’s Day, and ministry based upon the call of Christ rather than the ordination of men. They follow and obey the Scripture, refusing to follow human tradition and creed. Others call them Brethren, but they prefer to be called Christians. Doctrine and Practices The Brethren seek to assemble in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and to maintain the apostolic pattern and simplicity which marked the churches of the days of the apostles (Romans 12:4-8). We honor the Lord Jesus and worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). The Church began with the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and is composed of all true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. These believers are united to Him and to one another by the indwelling Spirit. This means that the Church, as a whole, is not an organization, but a living organism, known as the body of Christ. Every true child of God possesses eternal life, and being justified, sanctified, and sealed with the Holy Spirit, is safe and secure for all eternity. However, a Christian can, through sin, lose his fellowship, joy, power, testimony, and reward, thus incurring the Father’s chastisement. Relationship is eternal, being established by new birth; fellowship, however, is dependent upon obedience.

"Plymouth Brethren" FAQ
Author: Shawn Abigail
January 2005
Version 1.9.1 This Frequently Asked Questions list (FAQ) concentrates on the so called "Open Brethren" since this is the background of the author. However, an attempt is made to explain some of the positions of "Closed and Exclusive Brethren". This FAQ should not in any way be considered to be an authoritative document representing the view of any local church or any individual (including the author). At almost every point in this FAQ, you will find Brethren churches that will disagree or differ. Variation is even greater between different countries. The author could probably best be described as from the traditional end of the open Brethren in North America. Suggestions and corrections should be emailed to: Shawn Abigail This FAQ now has an official home page! You can see it at: Quite a number of brothers have sent me email with suggestions and additions. I would like to thank all who have helped build this FAQ.

"Plymouth Brethren" History FAQ
Version 0.2
September 1997
This work is under construction, and comments are invited.
Here is a FAQ on the history of that movement sometimes referred to as the "Plymouth Brethren". That title is rejected by most of the Christians within these assemblies, but is commonly applied to them. The questions appear in the left column, while the answers appear in the right column. Also in the right column is my analysis of the historical facts. This analysis appears in Italics.
Why do you mention so many splits?
The first reason is that it is a sad historical fact. While the "Plymouth Brethren" have given a great deal to evangelical Christianity, they have suffered many splits, particularly in the "Exclusive Meetings". The second reason is more subtle - it is easier to discuss splits than broad changes of direction. Just as secular historians find it easier to discuss and find original source material on wars, it is easier to discuss and find original source material on splits than on the development of evangelistic techniques, missions work, etc.
Where and when did the "Plymouth Brethren" start?

Whatever Happened to the Brethren?
A survey of local churches in 1998-1999
by Graham Brown, with an introduction by Neil Summerton Partnership / Paternoster Press 2003 This new book describes the results of a major survey of churches of 'Open Brethren' background in the United Kingdom. The Open Brethren began in the 19th century with a group of British Evangelical Christians who wanted to return to the purity of the New Testament Church. Their desire was to base church practice on the Bible, rather than on the traditions of a particular denomination. Key early Brethren leaders included J N Darby, A. N. Groves, and George Muller. Some of the distinctives of the Brethren are:
  • The autonomy of the local congregation Leadership by a body of lay elders; opposition to the idea of a paid professional ministry

Who are the Brethren? by F. F. Bruce
  • Introduction Origins Overseas Missions Doctrines ... About The Author
  • Introduction
The Brethren , or 'Christian Brethren' , take this name because they prefer to be known by a designation comprehensive enough to embrace all their fellow-Christians. There are two main groupings among them, commonly described as 'Open Brethren' and 'Exclusive Brethren' . The terms 'Open' and 'Exclusive' are intended to denote their respective principles of communion. These pages are concerned only with the people called 'Open Brethren'; the writer has no authority to write about his 'Exclusive' friends. It may be useful to make one point in this connection, however. During the last year or two considerable publicity has been given in British newspapers to the withdrawal of a number of people called Brethren from various business and professional associations, and from Universities. These people belong to one party only of Exclusive Brethren, and their policy in such matters is not shared by other Exclusive Brethren, and still less by Open Brethren. This distinction has not always been clearly observed, and the result has been considerable confusion in the public mind. The Open Brethren have no central organization. They belong to a large number of local churches or assemblies, spread throughout the British Commonwealth, the United States, the European continent and many other regions.
