INTERIM RESEARCH NOTES ON INDEPENDENT/OLD CATHOLICS
For about two deacdes, I have conducted research on various Independent Catholic bodies in the United States, primarily in the Old Catholic family. Documentary evidence is difficult to obtain, is scattered, fragmented, and inadequately archived. Hence, I began spending more time as an anthropologist. I have visited, observed worship with, and interviewed independent Catholic communities in twenty three states and every region in the nation.
I have presented three papers on Independents before various learned societies, but I do not believe that the subject matter is capable of sustained treatment in print until the materials for this subject matter are collected and properly archived. sustain a systematic analysis. Until that happens, the following summary represents my tentative assessment of these phenomena; something of a report on work in progress.
Rather than try to bring too much systematic order to what is, by its very nature, chaotic, I will put out some general information and will be prepared to answer any and all inquiries with as much detailed information as you wish (e.g. Who is this Vilatte fellow anyway? or Tell me more about this Council of Independent Catholic Bishops?)
While the Old Catholic movement in Europe has a distinctive and well-known history dating from at least the 18th century (some argue that the antecedents are far older), and gaining additional strength during the First Vatican Council, Old Catholicism in the US is a multifaceted movement, not very well know, and may be too diverse to be considered a movement at all. Independent Anglicanism (for lack of a better term"continuing" does not apply to all of these groups) is somewhat less diverse, but is multiform, nonetheless.

The Old Catholic Church In America: "At the Old Catholic Congress of Olten, 1904, Bishop Kozlowski was accompanied by Mgr. Tichy who had been sent to the Old Catholics by the American Czechs as their Bishop-Elect to pray for consecration at their hands. In 1905, Mgr. Tichy was appointed by Archbishop Gul of Utrecht as Episcopal administrator of non-Polish Slavs in the United States with the purpose of bringing them over to Old Catholicism. He was subsequently consecrated as Bishop by Bishop Kozlowski for this work. With the death of the Polish Bishop in November of 1907, many of the Polish members of the movement fell into the defection of one of the clergy, Francis Hodur, who organized a movement now known as the Polish National Reformed Church in America. "In the meantime, a group of English-speaking Old Catholics were being gathered together by the untiring efforts of a former Roman Catholic monk, the learned Dom Augustine de Angelis (William Harding), who had organized a community of men devoted to the Religious Rule of St. Benedict at Waukegan, Illinois. This community and the missions under its care were received into the jurisdiction of Bishop Tichy in 1907. On St. Patrick's Day, 1911, William Henry Francis, who had been elected Prior of the Community, was ordained to the Priesthood by Bishop Tichy and on April 20th, 1913, he was consecrated Mitred Abbot. Upon the retirement of Bishop Tichy in 1914, Mgr. Francis was appointed to take charge of the diocese.

History of the United Catholic Church Introduction: The United Catholic Church is a free non-hierarchical fellowship of independent Catholic, Orthodox, and Apostolic churches who trace their individual histories back to the early church and to the apostles themselves. The history of our church then begins with the Book of Acts (with which I assume you are familiar). It continues through the undivided church of the first millennium, whose Catholic faith it upholds. It is at the time of the Great Schism of 1054 that the histories of our individual churches diverge from each other. Some of us are descended primarily from the Eastern or Orthodox branch of Christianity, others from the Western or Roman branch. Many of us represent a union of both branches. But all of us trace our Apostolic succession back to the Patriarchs of the undivided Church, and through them to apostolic times. th and 16 th centuries, and the emergence in the 19 th century of the Old Catholic Church and the Utrecht Union. We will see that most of our churches are descended from the Old Catholic Church, yet many of us also have recent bishops of the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox churches in our apostolic line. The independent Catholic movement can be viewed as a further fracturing of the Roman monolith. Yet in truth, it represents an attempt to bring back the pieces, laying the basis for true unity by discarding demands for uniformity.

A short history The Austrian Nobleman, who was raised to the Episcopate by Bishop Arnold Harris Mathew (pictured below and to the right) on June 29, 1913 was known to the world as Rudolph Francis Edward St. Patrick Alphonsus Ghislain de Gramont Hamilton de Lorraine-Brabant, Prince de Landas Berghes et de Rache, Duc de St. Winock. The British Foreign Office arranged for his departure from England in September of 1914 to prevent his being interned during the war as an "enemy alien." Such an act would have been highly embarrassing since the Prince was related to nearly every royal house in Europe. He came to America and, as was common in those days for many Old Catholic clergymen in America, was licensed to function in the Episcopal Church. He assisted in the consecration of Hiram Richard Hulse as the Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Cuba on January 12, 1915 as is record in the Episcopal Church Annual (c.f. 1953 Annual.) Bishop Rudolph de Landas Berghes took up residence at St. Dunstan's Abbey, Waukegan, Illinois and raised Abbot William H. F. Brothers to the episcopacy on October 3, 1916. The following day he consecrated Carmel Henry Carfora as a bishop of the Old Roman Catholic Church of America. He also with Bishop Carfora consecrated Stanislaus Mickiewicz, a former Polish National Catholic priest, in 1917.

    Western Liturgical Family
THE ANGLICAN TRADITION The Church of England is also called the Anglican Church. In the United States after the Revolutionary War it has usually been called Episcopalian. When Henry VIII split with Rome in the 16 th century the Church of England kept its already existing structure, with bishops, clergy, church buildings, and congregations being placed under the archbishop of Canterbury. The Church of England retained its traditional doctrine, liturgy, and organization. Not until Edward VII, Elizabeth I, and Oliver Cromwell did greater changes come in. The Church of England turned from Protestant under Edward to Catholic under Mary. Elizabeth adopted a middle ground, seeking to blend both Catholic and Protestant elements. The Protestant character can be seen in the rejection of the concept of Purgatory, the discontinuation of the use of indulgences and relics, and the use of English rather than Latin for worship. Elizabeth retained the traditional episcopal structure even though it was controversial. Many English Puritans also objected to ordained priests. Anglican doctrine on the church shifted from an emphasis on the bishop to the Calvinist emphasis on the congregation. The Book of Common Prayer affirms that the Church exists where the Word of God is preached, the sacraments are duly administered, and the faithful are gathered.

  • The commentary on this website is my own, and does not necessarily reflect that of any ecclesial body.
  • I don't necessarily agree with the theology, liturgical practices, disciplinary practices or actions of the many churches, ministries and clergy this website links to. Born of pain and ashes. A healing place. Created by wounded healers in the power of the Holy Spirit. An amazing variety of theological leanings, forms of church structure, rules of internal discipline and patterns of liturgical worship. A rich and colorful historic apostolic succession. Intimately small faith communities and house churches. These are some of the many positive ways the "independent movement" can be described. I use the phrases "the autocephalous movement" and "the independent movement" to describe a loose grouping of diverse, newer, smallish, self-governing apostolic-succession Christian church denominations that are not connected to (or formally recognized by), for the most part, the larger, older, apostolic-succession churches*. Some folks also use the terms, "Autocephalous Orthodox", "Independent Catholic", "Non-SCOBA Orthodox", "Continuing Anglican", "Alternative Catholic" and "Old Catholic". Some of these churches are autogenic or self-starting: entepreneurial Christianity at its best! Others were created by splits from another Christian denomination. Still others were left stranded due to political machinations in their parent churches.

As a part of the "Catholic Diocese of the Old Catholics in Germany" we arrange our ecclesiastical life within the rules set down by our Reformed Catholic Church. We take special care in the conduct of worship, to enrich the community and for deepening and passing on of the faith, which is based in Jesus Christ and his act of reconciliation. Reformed Catholics Based on critical examination of the historical witness of early Christianity, the leaders of the Old Catholic Church developed an episcopal, synodical church structure, which incorporates the Apostolic, episcopal and priestly offices into democratic structures at all levels. To make our catholic renewal visible, we add the description "Reformcatholics" in brackets to our name, because many people misunderstand "Old Catholic" as being very conservative. History of the congregation After the First Vatican Council (1870), congregations of Catholic Christians were formed in German-speaking countries whose consciences prevented them from accepting the new dogmas of the Pope's infallibility and his jurisdictional primacy and who retained their previous beliefs. After a prelude in the village Mering (1871 - 1878), our parish was founded in 1894 through Rev. Anton Gatzenmeier (Munic) and Friedrich Trient (Augsburg).

Old Catholic Congress in Prague, 19-23 August 2002 'To a land that I shall show you' (Gen. 12.1) was the motto of this year's Old Catholic Congress in Prague. Undeterred by the recent floods, the Curate joined other members of the Society of Saint Willibrord in travelling to the Prague event. Every four years, representatives from the people and clergy of the Old Catholic Churches in Europe meet together for worship and discussions on the future of their church. The idea behind this gathering is a bit like the ideas behind our own Diocesan Convention : the question whether the church is still on track, whether the church as it is today still is orientated towards God, whether we still focus on the right things.
The Old Catholic Church is not, as the name might suggest, a strange conservative club. On the contrary, it is a church that developed out of the difficult claims Pope Pius IX made at the end of the last century when he proclaimed himself and his successors infallible. In continental Europe a great number of Roman Catholics found themselves in disagreement with their own church and, when their leaders maintained and enforced the belief that popes from henceforth were seen as being always right, saw no other way than leaving their church. Under the leadership of the Archbishop of Utrecht, the head of the Church in the Netherlands , people from Holland, Germany Switzerland Austria , the Czech Republic and Poland left their church, in order to start afresh: and like the Anglican Church, the Old Catholic Church therefore is a church without a Pope.

The Catholic Charismatic Church of Canada was a response to the modernism that was being felt in the Church and to statements in the reports of Vatican II, inviting new rites and patriarchies. The CCCC was conceived as such an undertaking, a progressive-conservative patriarchy: a new stem of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
Patriarch Barbeau passed away on February 14, 1994. His successor is Patriarch André II, formerly known as Archbishop André Le Tellier, who was installed in February of 1994 in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the Cité de Marie. Patriarch André II assisted Patriarch André Barbeau from the beginning of the CCCC and served as Coadjutor Bishop with rights of succession. In matters of faith and morals, the Catholic Charismatic Church of Canada observes the teachings of the Roman Church. The Catholic Charismatic Church of Canada seeks to preserve a proper freedom by focusing itself as an avenue for ministering to Catholics who find themselves unchurched for a variety of reasons. It is also ecumenical and seeks to promote unity by welcoming people of various religious traditions who are searching for a spiritual home. The Catholic Charismatic Church is a sacramental church and seeks to promote the truth of the Gospels as such. The CCCC expresses the body of Christ in caring, non-legalistic, pastoral communities.

The Proper Use of Our Senses. How They May Help Us to Contemplate Divine Things One must give great care and constant application to the correct regulation of his senses. The sensitive appetite, the source of all actions of our weakened nature, has an unquenchable thirst for pleasure . Since it cannot satisfy itself, it uses the senses to attract their proper objects and then transmits these images to the mind. Sensual pleasures, consequently, by reason of the union which subsists between body and soul, spread themselves through all the senses capable of pleasure and then seize, like a contagious disease, upon the spiritual faculties. In this way they effect the corruption of the entire man. You can use the following remedies against this enormous evil. Watch your senses carefully. Use them only for some good purpose, some advantageous motive or real necessity, never for the sake of mere pleasure . If they do go astray, perhaps unnoticed, if they transgress the bounds which reason prescribes, check them immediately. They must be so regulated that, instead of embracing objects for the sake of false pleasure, they become accustomed to draw from the same objects great helps for the sanctification and perfection of the soul. The soul, then, through recollection is able to rise from the knowledge of earthly things to the contemplation of the divine goodness. This can be done in the following way. When an agreeable object is presented to the senses
