International Old Catholic Bishops' Conference The International Old Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Union of Utrecht (IBC) met in Wislikofen, Switzerland, July 6-16, 1997. It evaluated the study process which, according to the decisions taken at the IBC meeting in 1991, took place in the member churches on the issue of the ordination of women and its consequences for the churches and their ecumenical relations. This process became necessary because of the divergent development on the issue of the ordination of women in the member churches of the Union of Utrecht. As a consequence the statement of the IBC of 1976, which excludes the possibility of the ordination of women, could not be supported any longer by all member churches. The evaluation of the results brought the Bishops' Conference to realize that some Old Catholic churches deem the ordination of women necessary for the sake of the credibility of their mission, which is why they want to implement the ordination as soon as possible. Other churches are convinced that they cannot ordain women, because their internal and external credibility would be damaged. Faced with this situation, the Bishops' Conference states that a provision of the Agreement of the Union of Utrecht, which is one of the fundamental documents of the churches united in the Union of Utrecht, cannot be fully implemented any longer. According to this provision, the Old Catholic churches are in full communion with each other. Since some churches cannot, for the sake of their convictions, recognize the ordination of women, this communion is no longer fully shared.

  • he Liberal Catholic movement of the nineteenth century was an attempt to bridge the gap between the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church and the dominant secular principles of the age . It is difficult precisely to define Liberal Catholicism: it was neither liberal enough to satisfy the Liberals nor quite Catholic enough to please the Pope. Liberal Catholicism was not necessarily Liberal in politics: on the continent of Europe it tended towards moderate clericalism or conservative federalism. Nor was it invariably liberal in theology, and it must be clearly distinguished from such movements as Jansenism, Gallicanism or modernism. The liberalism of Liberal Catholicism consisted rather in its view of the relations between theology and politics: it was an intellectual liberalism, characterized by an emphasis upon the legitimacy and value of intellectual sources independent of the authority of the Church.

I critiqued a paper by Ed Babinski in my post, Reply to "The Problem of Pain and the Egomania of the Psalms". Ed responded with an extremely lengthy e-mail (137K), which, unfortunately, launched into several quite-lengthy digressions. Our dialogue styles are obviously very different. I prefer a straight-line, particularistic, Socratic approach, where small issues and premises are worked-through before moving on to larger pictures. Ed seems to want to cover every base in a general way, all at once. I don't see how that accomplishes much, myself. You can only do so much at any given time, so topics must be limited. Every college course inherently recognizes this.
In fairness to Ed, I have temporarily posted

    CATHOLICS TOGETHER
One formal declaration boldly documents the Evangelical and Catholic commitment to work together to evangelize and bring about social reform in the world. The Evangelicals and Catholics Together Document , subtitled The Christian Mission in the Third Millennium, laid the groundwork for Evangelicals and Catholics to set aside their distinctive doctrines and to unite with other religions in a United Religions Organization by the year 2005 A.D. The ECT Document was authored and presented in May of 1994 by Charles Colson of Prison Fellowship and Roman Catholic priest, Richard John Neuhaus. In 1993, Chuck Colson was the recipient of the $1,000,000 "Prize for Progress in Religion," given annually at the Parliament of World Religions by New Age financier, John Templeton. Colson's Prison Fellowship International is a non-governmental organization (NGO) of the United Nations. Father Neuhaus is the director of the Institute on Religion and Public Life who, as former Lutheran and a seminary student, rejected the doctrine of justification by faith in Jesus Christ. The ECT Document was signed by 20 Catholic leaders and 20 Evangelical leaders including Dr. Bill Bright of Campus Crusade for Christ, Pat Robertson, President of CBN, J.I. Packer of

A look at how catholics arrived at the current collection of old Testament books.

    Canon of The Old Testament
    by W. Hartono
Most of us take it for granted to have a copy of Bible and do not bother to know how we got it. The question how the list of Old Testament books was determined hardly comes to our mind, until some of our non-Catholic friends pointed to us the difference in number of books between our Old Testament and theirs. Catholic Old Testament is longer by seven books: Tobith, Judith, Baruch (with letter of Jeremiah Sirach (or Ecclesiasticus Wisdom and 1 and 2 Maccabees . It has also extra chapters and verses in Daniel and Esther. The total number of Catholic Old Testament books is 46 (or 45 if we combine Jeremiah and Lamentation) while that of Protestant is 39. Based on this difference, they may also accuse that Catholic Church added those seven books in sixteenth century at Council of Trent. Hence a knowledge of historical background of our Old Testament is necessary to really understand the matter. During Jesus time, the Jews did not officially have a list of inspired books or canon. The word "canon" comes from Greek "kanon" meaning a measuring rod. The Hebrew speaking Jews in Palestine are generally known to use 24 books which they divided in three divisions: the Law (5 books of Moses or Pentateuch); the Prophets (4 former and 4 latter prophets) and the Writings (11 books). The Sadducees most likely did not accept Daniel as Dan 12:2 supports resurrection which they denied (Mark 12:18). Others like

It will serve now to list in comparable columns the canons of the Old Testament as accepted by both Roman Catholics and Protestant Evangelicals. Jews have the same canon as Protestants. The lists are divided into the groups as taught by the respective faith groups. The books with asterisks are those of the Roman Catholic canon which are considered canonical, but are labeled apocryphal by Protestants and Evangelicals.

    n. A member of an independent religious organization formed by a group of German Roman Catholics who refused to accept the doctrine of papal infallibility proclaimed by the Vatican Council in 1870.
    Encyclopedia
Old Catholics, Christian denomination established by German Catholics who separated themselves from the Roman Catholic Church when they rejected (1870) the decrees of the First Vatican Council , especially the dogma of the infallibility of the pope. The Old Catholic movement began publicly with a meeting of professors at Nuremberg (1870) under the leadership of Johann Joseph Ignaz von D¶llinger . By 1874, a new church had been established with a bishop consecrated by a Jansenist bishop (see under Jansen, Cornelis ) of the Church of Utrecht, which had itself separated from Rome in an earlier (1724) schism considered to be a precursor of the Old Catholic movement. Church doctrines were codified by the Declaration of Utrecht (1889), which rejected communion with the pope and many Roman Catholic doctrines and practices; priests were allowed to marry and confession was made optional. Roman ritual was retained but was usually performed in the vernacular. Old Catholicism spread to Switzerland and Austria and then to other nations, arriving in the United States as early as 1885. The Polish National Catholic Church of America, one of the most important early groups, was formed in 1897. Christ Catholic Church, established in 1968, is one of the newest. In 1990, U.S. membership in various Old Catholic churches numbered some 500,000. Other important Old Catholic groups include the

This tradition is well-rooted in Catholic teaching (1 Corinthians 11: 5, 6, 10); yet sadly it is among the many devotional customs discarded after Vatican II. However, good Catholic women recognize the necessity of modesty in all things and lovingly follow the example of purity and modesty set by our Blessed Mother.

The Catholic Apostolic National Church is a body of Christians committed to the Person of Jesus Christ and His teaching. We accept and believe the testimony of His Apostles, eyewitnesses of His Life, Death and Resurrection from among the dead. They passed on to succeeding generations their own testimony about Jesus Christ and His life. By the proclaiming of His Gospel, and the giving of their own testimony (called the Apostolic Tradition), the Church, which the Lord instituted, was built up. The Catholic Apostolic National Church is an historic part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church . The Catholic Apostolic National Church bears its apostolic lineage from Roman Catholic Church, the Syrian Orthodox (Oriental) Church of Antioch , the Greek Orthodox Church, and the Russian Orthodox Church.

Our particular denomination traces its roots through the European Old Catholic Churches. Of particular concern to us is the offering of valid sacraments to those who have left Catholicism, or other Christians seeking forms of worship and beliefs founded in the traditions and beliefs of the early church. We are currently seeking mature adults who feel a call to Holy Orders (Deacon, Priest) and/or those already ordained that are seeking to incardinate. We welcome those who are self-sustained, as we pay no salaries to our clergy. Our clergy, who like St. Paul, pay their own way. The real question of succession and nomenclature is what groups called themselves what and who joined whom. The term "Old Catholic" is, I think, an invention of the German group (the Munich convention, I believe). I can't find anything just off hand on the web to find out what the Utrecht schism called *itself* from the early 18th century until the late 19th century, but I have never in the (admittedly Roman Catholic) material seen a refernce to that group as "Old" until after the Union of Utrecht. There's a book called "Episcopi Vagantes" that would help, but we don't have a copy of it in our little liberal arts college library. MichaelTinkler Well, I got the information I added from: , which is a somewhat biased source, though I am unsure of the correctness of its factual statements. We both updated the article at the same time, but I couldn't work out which of us was right, so now we have two articles... Simon J Kissane hmm. I'll look around and work on it. We don't have either the book I refer to above and I can't find in my database bibliography the book I read published in the mid-80s about Old Catholics in America.

    History of the Jurisdiction
It is interesting to note that the Protestant Episcopal Church of the USA (Anglican Communion) recognised Bishop de Landas Berghes as possessing a valid episcopate. He was one of the consecrators of the Right Rev. Hiram Richard Hulse on 12 January 1915 in New York City. Dr. Hulse was the PECUSA Bishop of Cuba from 1915 to 1938. From 1916 to 1950 Canadian Old Catholic parishes were under the direct administration of the Archdiocese of NAORCC, with, from time to time local bishops overseeing some Canadian parishes. On the 22nd April 1950 the Old Catholic Diocese of Hamilton , with its Pro-Cathedral located at St. Francis of Assisi Old Roman Catholic Church, 420 Aberdeen Avenue, Hamilton, Ontario, joined the NAORCC. On that date, the Rt. Rev. George Frank Davis, who had Old Catholic episcopal succession via the Mathew-Bacon line of Old Catholic bishops, was sub conditione consecrated into the de Landas Berghes-Carfora line by the Rt. Rev. Francis Michael Donahue. (Bishop Donahue had been consecrated by Archbishop Carfora on 3 November 1946.) The Old Catholic Diocese of Hamilton, due to its growth and stability, quickly became the main centre of the NAORCC in Canada.
