Old Catholics are an historic part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and have their origins in the Ancient Catholic Church of the Netherlands. As an entire group, Old (and Independent) Catholic jurisdictions form a diverse spectrum of usage and theological opinion ranging from those who support women's ordination to those who maintain pre Vatican I (and two) teachings and usages, to those who express Byzantine and Orthodox rites. General Observations There are a few observations which can be made that apply to most all Old Catholics. In general, Old Catholics (as well as Independent Catholics) recognize the role played by the Pope as a key role in the world, but not as the sole ruler of the Catholic world. Old Catholics may revere the Pope but are not subject to his rule. They tend to govern themselves by Synods of Bishops rather than concentration of power in a single individual.
  • Old Catholics cherish, maintain and promote the value of the Apostolic Succession, having valid succession recognized by Rome itself.

Just for the Record
Five years have passed since the traditional Catholic Community centered in Spokane, Washington at Mt. St. Michael (also known as the Religious Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen) underwent the terrible scandal caused by the personal immorality of Francis Schuckardt. The time that has elapsed since the fall of Schuckardt has afforded the opportunity for the Community to rectify a number of matters and to reorganize and reestablish itself. However, there are some among the various traditional Catholic groups who will forever attempt to discredit the

"Old Catholics" A Schism from 1870-71 that Lives On
The College of Cardinals has elected a pope so stridently conservative and politically activist that his predecessor sometimes had to overrule him, as recently as last year on the matter of Turkey's relationship with Europe. Benedict XVI is poised to make John Paul II look like a compromiser. In some ways, he has been assistant pope for two decades, and liberal hopes that this particular 78-year-old will change after a few months in office seem wildly misplaced.
So will the Catholic Church in the United States see another exodus to the Episcopalian Church, or did those so inclined already leave long ago? If Episcopalians offered to host masses of Catholic liturgy, under (ex?)Catholic clergy in effect to house two congregations under one roof they might effect some interesting developments....
Liturgy and tradition, as opposed to theology, may be the primary factors retaining many American Catholics in the Church. If those factors can be accommodated elsewhere, Rome's budget will have cause for worry, and Ratzinger may be surprised at how small "small" can be.
Conversely, is there much chance that discontented anti-homosexual-ordination Episcopalians will defect to Rome?

Old Catholics - New Doctrines
The Roman Catholic Cardinal Archbishop of Utrecht says that the selection of an ex-Roman Catholic priest, Fr. Joris Vercammen, to lead the Old Catholic Union of Utrecht adds an "extra problem" to relations between the two churches, but that the larger difficulty is women's ordination in some Old Catholic bodies. Fr. Vercammen was ordained in the Roman Catholic Church in 1979 and became Old Catholic in 1988. Old Catholics reject papal infallibility and certain other positions upheld by Rome, though Old Catholic Orders have been (until recently) recognised by Rome. The 400,000 member Union of Utrecht is officially in communion with the Canterbury led Anglican Communion, with the exception of the Union's largest body, the Polish National Catholic Church (PNCC) in North America. The PNCC broke communion with the Anglican churches of Canada and America, as well as the Church of England in 1992, over women's ordination, and now is estranged from several European Old Catholic bodies which have moved to ordain women. The PNCC has broken communion with Old Catholic churches in Germany, Austria, Holland and Switzerland over the innovation. The significant percentage of ex-Roman Catholics in leadership of European Old Catholic churches seem, in fact, to have catalysed the movement of these bodies to accept female ordination.

Independent Old Catholics Recognise Women are Equal in Christ
1 Cotinthians 11:13
The Most Reverend Archbishop Gary Beaver of The Interdenominational Church of the Holy Lands made an official statement on behalf of the Independent Old Catholic denomination in full support of women in all offices of the church “ The gift of Calling and serving the church community is not and should not be a question of gender” Archbishop goes on to state “ Many have stated that there are political reasons supporting arguments against female Bishops and women in the church, which only goes to prove that we should worship God in our churches and not politics.”
Many see that allowing women to become Priests and Bishops is a novelty within the Church in the last 50 years. Not only is it an historical novelty it is still confined to a fairly small proportion of Christian churches.
Christ made women’s ordination possible when he revoked the Old Testament priesthood of Aaron and brought both men and women into a new convenant; into a new priesthood through baptism. "All of you are children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. All of you who have been baptized in Christ, have clothed yourselves in Christ. Thus there is no longer Jew nor Greek, free nor slave, male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3,27-28.
The ordination to the priesthood is a fuller participation in baptism’s sacrificial and prophetic gifts. Christ replaced a priesthood based on the sacred by a priesthood based on grace; a universal priesthood shared by all the baptized. This priesthood is given through the sacrament of baptism, and baptism is the same whether for a man or a woman.

Old Catholics seek identity at the margins By MICHAEL J. FARRELL
NCR Staff
Orange, Calif.
In the city of Orange in Southern California in a nondescript mall where commerce is king, a church is scarcely typical. The Church of St. Matthew is less typical still. It is an Old Catholic church. The Union of Utrecht became the Vatican for Old Catholics, except that the union was never able to keep its daughter churches on such a short leash as its prototype by the Tiber. Yet Utrecht is vitally important to Old Catholics in one regard: It is seen as source and guarantor of apostolic succession, that unbroken line that, Catholics insist, must go back to Jesus and the apostles. The name Old Catholic is seen by members as more confusing than helpful except for that all-important implication of proper pedigree. Obsessed with the need for apostolic succession, priests got themselves consecrated bishops on a grand scale. But in most such cases they had no flock, no priests. The best-organized exception, says Hickman, was the Polish National Catholic church headquartered in Scranton, Pa. This continues to be ethnically based and therefore exclusive. A personal search Even in the unusual milieu of the Old Catholic church, Hickman is atypical. His personal search helps explain why the Old Catholic church survives as friendly port in a storm for a variety of tempest-tossed souls.

    Who We Are
The Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands
The Church in the Netherlands and the Reformation
Armed with the protection of the papal concessions, the Church in the Netherlands continued to minister even through the Reformation. During this period of strife, the Church in the Netherlands, as in many other countries, was forced to "go underground" in order to survive. But survive and remain extant, it did. Eventually, the Archbishop of Utrecht and other Church leaders reached an informal agreement with the civil government, whereby it could again function openly without interference from the Reformers.
    The Move from Isolation
    In the United States
Another Old Catholic priest, Fr. Joseph Renee Vilatte, began his minsitry in Wisconsin, which led to the establishment of Old Catholic familial lines making us brothers and sisters to the Oriental Orthodox Churches in Middle East. Fr. Vilatte ultimately became Bishop Vilatte, consecrated bishop under the authority of Mar Ignatius Peter III, Jacobite Patriarch of Antioch. He was consecrated a bishop by Mar Julius, Metropolitan of the Independent Catholic Church of Ceylon, Goa and India, who was assisted by Mar Paul Athanasius, Bishop of Kottayam and Mar George Gregorius, Bishop of Niranam (who was later cannonized as a saint in the Indian Orthodox Church). He then returned to the United States, where his Episcopal lines would stand alongside those of Bishop Mathew, in securing valid lines of Apostolic Succession, both of which many of the Independent Catholic Churches in the United States share.
