Saint Matthew Church An Ecumenical Catholic Community Home An Old Catholic History... The history of the Old Catholic Movement within Catholicism is significant for our faith community because it is from the Old Catholic Church that the Ecumenical Catholic Communion her apostolic succession and her distinctive theological orientation. This article was written by an Old Catholic Benedictine brother who lived in an Old Catholic community in Woodstock, New York. This writing is somewhat dated in that it was written and published in 1941 for a local newspaper, The Catskill Mountain Star The vicissitudes of time and the machinations of men give words strange connotations. Often they no longer fit the mental pictures they create. When Woostockians looked up to Overlook Mountain and saw high on its slopes the gray clad figures of a religious community rehabilitating the deserted little chapel below Mead’s Mountain House, they were puzzled to hear the several young men calling themselves "Old", displaying an evangelistic enthusiasm for a faith they called "Catholic". They were completely nonplused when one of the older men of the community in overalls addressed a similarly clad younger man "Father". Except for the fact that "they never past a collection plate" at Saint Dunstan’s Church but believe instead in laboring with their own hands at crafts that are both beautiful and practical many good folk still know little of their past, their future hopes, their unique doctrinal and ecclesiastical position or of their modern and adaptable approach to the world’s problems. To let them know that in the first place "Old Catholicism" is not merely a local and new cult but a long existent world wide "Movement" that their ministrations are not bound within the limited horizons of creed and denominationalism but extend to the boundless need of people weary of religious disunity and eager for a genuine expression of Christ-likeness, is their own self-desire.

Overview
There are three groups of canonical Old Catholics: 1) Those of the diocese of Utrecht in the Netherlands, out of communion with the Roman see since the eighteenth century; 2) Communities in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the Czech Republic which opposed the Roman Catholic dogma of Papal Infallibility as promulgated at the First Vatican Council; and 3) Polish National Catholics in the United States, Canada and Poland who removed themselves from obedience to the Roman Catholic Church from 1895 under the leadership of Bishops Kozlowski and Hodur.

Project Canterbury The Place of the Old Catholics in the Work of Unity
By the Rev. C. B. Moss. The Christian East , Winter, 1928, pp. 167-170. THE Old Catholic churches are seven small autocephalous churches in communion with the ancient see of Utrecht, which was founded by St. Willibrord in 697, and was excommunicated by Rome early in the eighteenth century. Their separate position is the result of three movements in different periods and countries; the struggle between the See of Utrecht and the Jesuits; the revolt in Germany and other countries against the Vatican Council; later "Los von Rom" movements in South-Eastern Europe and in America. The Old Catholic movement has always received much sympathy both from Orthodox and from Anglican authorities. The Oecumenical Patriarch Joachim II. sent his last message to his Anglican friends not to forget the Old Catholics: and successive Lambeth Conferences, ever since 1878, have offered special privileges to Old Catholics deprived of the ministry of their own clergy. The Old Catholics, like the Orthodox churches, accept the Seven Councils and the Seven Sacraments, but not the Papal Supremacy or the "Filioque" clause. They resemble the Anglican churches in being modern and critical, and in certain points of discipline: e.g., the clergy of all orders are permitted to marry after ordination. It is natural that Utrecht should be regarded as a bridge between Constantinople and Canterbury, with each of which if. has points of contact. And yet this is not quite the real place of the Old Catholic churches in the work of unity.

Old Catholics
General Information Old Catholics include several small local churches that have separated from the Roman Catholic church. The Church of Utrecht - which was established in 1724 in a dispute over papal charges of Jansenism in Holland - was the first of these churches to separate from Rome. In the 1870s other Old Catholic churches were formed in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria by those Catholics who rejected the dogma of papal infallibility promulgated by the First Vatican Council (1870). The first German bishop was consecrated (1874) by a bishop of the Church of Utrecht. In the United States, Polish Roman Catholics, resentful of domination by non - Polish clergy, split in 1897 to form the National Polish church. Other Slavic groups have also become Old Catholics, as has the Philippine Independent Church (established 1902). Old Catholic churches are in communion with each other and with the Church of England and seek ecumenical relations. Bishops and priests may marry; services generally follow the Roman ritual and are in the vernacular; in some both bread and wine are distributed to the congregation in communion. BELIEVE

The Old Catholic movement began publicly with a meeting of professors at Nuremberg (1870) under the leadership of Johann Joseph Ignaz von . By 1874, a new church had been established with a bishop consecrated by a Jansenist bishop (see under Jansen, Cornelis ) of the Church of Utrecht, which had itself separated from Rome in an earlier (1724) schism considered to be a precursor of the Old Catholic movement. Church doctrines were codified by the Declaration of Utrecht (1889), which rejected communion with the pope and many Roman Catholic doctrines and practices; priests were allowed to marry and confession was made optional. Roman ritual was retained but was usually performed in the vernacular. Old Catholicism spread to Switzerland and Austria and then to other nations, arriving in the United States as early as 1885. The Polish National Catholic Church of America, one of the most important early groups, was formed in 1897. Christ Catholic Church, established in 1968, is one of the newest. In the 1970's, Father Luigi Caroppo tried to resurrect the Old Catholic communities in Italy with the help of the Swiss Old Catholic Church. Although he lives in Scandiano (Reggio Emilia) he held occasional services at All Saints' Chapel in Minervino di Lecce, in Southern Italy. Due to theological and disciplinary reasons, his jurisdiction was revoked by the International Bishops' Conference in 1997. His group, named the "Old Catholic Church, the Christian Catholic Mission", is located in Rome ( http://www.chiesaveterocattolica.it ) . Another purely virtual reality is the so-called "Independent Old Catholic Church in Europe, with its seat in Stresa (in Northern Italy) http://caoce.freeyellow.com ). In order to distinguish themselves from these structures set up by "floating" bishops, the Italian parishes under the canonical jurisdiction of the International Episcopal Conference of the Uniion of Utrecht founded "the Old Catholic Church of the Union of Utrecht in Italy", whose website is at www.guarigione-liberazione.org. The individual ecclesiastical structures can be classified as follows: (A) PARISHES (B) MISSION PARISHES (C) DIASPORA (where Old Catholics, laity and clergy, live without having church buildings at their disposal). TURIN (B): THE MISSION PARISH OF ST WILLIBRORD was established in June 2002. It is a daughter parish, where pastoral care is provided from Milan at present. Two Roman Catholic churches are be used for regular worship. The Old Catholic presence in Piedmont is rooted in a very long tradition as a considerable number of Roman Catholic bishops and priests maintained close and friendly contact with the Church of Utrecht, already during the 18th century. As this is widely known, the Old Catholic Church was accepted quite naturally into the community of Christian Churches in Turin. The services are currently held by invitation (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost); it is our hope to find a new clergy-person who could hold regular services in both churches and ensure pastoral care.

Also called "Christian Catholic", this church unites the men and women who refused to accept the position defined by the Vatican Council I in 1869. The beginnings
Catholic loyalty to the Swiss state was called into question during the second half of the nineteenth century, since the Catholics were opposed to the creation of a federal state in 1848. Catholic ecclesiastic policy and statements made by certain Supreme Pontiffs, who rejected outright the modern notion of the state, only served to aggravate the misunderstanding: in 1864, pope Pius IX published a document listing the 80 propositions or heresies condemned as regards religion, science, politics and economy. A whole host of Catholics refused to venture into this new bellicose tendency of the Roman Church. The proclamation of papal infallibility in 1870 gave them the opportunity they were waiting for to leave the Roman Catholic Church and found a community to their preferences, the Old Catholic Church. The first "association of liberal Catholics" in Switzerland was formed in Olten in 1872. The first parishes were officially recognized as of 1876 in several cantons. Slow depreciation
Since 1930, the first year a distinct statistical count of adherents to this community was made, there has been a depreciation in both the number of adherents as well as their proportion to the resident population: of the 37,000 Old Catholics surveyed in 1930 (almost 1% of the population), there now remain less than 12,000 (0.2%).

Old Catholics
Who we are
Old Catholics are a body of Christians committed to the Person of Jesus Christ and His teaching. We accept and believe the testimony of His Apostles, eyewitnesses of His Life, Death and Resurrection from among the dead. They passed on to succeeding generations their own testimony about Jesus and His life. By proclaiming of His Gospel and the giving of their own testimony (called the Apostolic Tradition), the Church which the Lord instituted was built up. Old Catholics are an historic part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and have their origins in the Ancient Catholic Church of the Netherlands.
What is the ACU?
The ACU is a clericus ("kler-ee-koos"), an association of independent (Old) Catholic priests, organized as a California non-profit, tax-exempt religious corporation, with IRS 501(c)(3) status, for the purpose of furthering the work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are open to brotherly cooperation with other churches and associations with similar aims and dedication. We are also dedicated to providing our expertise in organization and computer technology to other Old and Independent Catholic jurisdictions who need and want them. By working together, we can make the ideal of "One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church" come true.

question
Can "Old Catholics" receive communion in the Catholic Church?
Puzzled in Pasadena
answer
All Old Catholics fall under the provision of Canon 844, paragraph 3 which reads: Catholic ministers may licitly administer the sacraments of penance, Eucharist and anointing of the sick to members of the oriental churches which do not have full communion with the Catholic Church, if they ask on their own for the sacraments and are properly disposed. This holds also for members of other churches, which in the judgment of the Apostolic See are in the same condition as the oriental churches as far as these sacraments are concerned. Old Catholics belong to a church which retains the Apostolic succession, but are not in full communion with Rome. With the passage of days, however, Woodstock had grown to know and like these men as they have grown to like Woodstock more and more. Through the first summer Sundays the bell that echoed down the mountainside from the Church of Christ-on-the-Mount called increasing numbers to worship with the young "Old" Catholics and with the advent of winter a place of worship had to be found in the village. Then in an old red barn, adjoining the Woodstock Country Club on the Saugerties-Woodstock road, whose hand hewn beams and weathered boards teem with memories and the romance of bygone days, they prayed for the common healing of the ills of humanity together with people who have been previously unchurched, dechurched or never-before churched. But with the exception of those with whom their activities have grown, and the friendly folk with whom they visit, the paradox of "Old" and "Catholic" and "young" and "evangelistic" still remains.

OLD CATHOLICS
OLD CATHOLICS The proceedings of the Vatican council and their outcome had at first threatened to lead to a serious schism in the Church. The minority against the decrees included many of the most distinguished prelates and theologians of the Roman communion, and the methods by which their opposition had been overcome seemed to make it difficult for them to submit. The pressure put upon them was, however, immense, and the reasons for submission may well have seemed overwhelming; in the end, after more or less delay, all the recalcitrant bishops gave in their adhesion to the decrees. The movement thus entered a new phase, the congress occupying itself mainly with the formation of a more definite organization and with the question of reunion with other Churches. The immediate effect was a fateful divergence of opinion; for many who sympathized with the opposition to the extreme papal claims shrank from the creation of a fresh schism. Prince Chlodwig Hohenlohe, who as prime minister of Bavaria had attempted to unite the governments against the definition of the dogma, refused to have anything to do with proceedings which could only end in the creation of a fresh sect, and would make the prospect of the reform of the Church from within hopeless; more important still, Dallinger refused to take part in setting up a separate organization, and though he afterwards so far modified his opinion as to help the Old Catholic community with sympathy and advice, he never formally joined it.
