Christianity remains seriously fragmented throughout the world. In North America alone, there are over 1,000 Christian organizations of significant size. Christianity is sometimes viewed as being divided into three wings: conservative, mainline and liberal. Others view Christianity as being composed of two or more quite different religions , each sharing the same name and each being based on a different interpretation of the Bible - one liberal, the other conservative. Many faith groups can be grouped into families of denominations which share a common history: e.g. the Anglican communion, Lutheran denominations, and Reformed Churches. These divisions are reflected in the multiplicity of Christian associations at the international level. The main ones are listed below:
Baptist World Alliance (BWA):
The Baptist World Alliance's motto is "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. They unite 196 Baptists conventions and unions worldwide, in over 200 countries. They indirectly represent approximately 43 million Baptist members.

SOUTHERN BAPTISTS JOIN HANDS WITH UNBELIEVERS IN ECUMENICAL CONFERENCE August 28, 2000 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org ) - The Religious Communication Congress 2000 was held in Chicago in March of this year, and among the organizations participating was the Baptist Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. The goal of the congress, which is held every 10 years, is to provide a "multi-faith forum for communicators of religion" to assist them in more effectively communicating religion throughout the world. Brad Pokorny, who represented the Baha’i religion, described the congress in these words: "In general, there was an atmosphere of genuine interfaith ecumenism that WENT BEYOND MERE TOLERANCE TO A REAL SENSE OF HARMONY AND CONSONANCE. I think in some ways religious communicators may well be out in front of their congregations and their leadership on this issue" ("RCC 2000 reflects world’s diversity," United Methodist News Service, April 13, 2000). "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty" (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).

Concerns and challenges for contemporary Baptists
William Brackney
30 Dec 2004
"Where are Baptists making the impact for the principles that we believe have shaped us over four centuries? Let me suggest to you some troubling trends that I find in our family, especially in North America."
Dr. William Brackney is Professor of Religion at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and a noted Baptist historian. The following lecture was addressed to the General Conference of the Seventh Day Baptists of the United States and Canada in Buckhannon, West Virginia, on August 4, 2004.
The talk was transcribed from the tape by Janet Thorngate. It was originally published in the October 2004 issue of The Sabbath Recorder . It is reprinted here for documentary purposes with the kind permission of the author and of Kevin Butler, Editor of The Sabbath Recorder
The beginning and the end of the lecture were addressed specifically to the Seventh Day Baptist Conference. They are included here for your information. The greater part of the lecture provides an informative and challenging assessment on the current situation and prospects for Baptists around the world.

Dean Wright and Ms. Mary Wright, distinguished Cathedral Deans of North America and honoured guests all: Of course, a mere 350 years is considered young, when discussing Cathedrals in other lands. Great Cathedrals such as Notre Dame or Salisbury in Britain are extolled in European Arts, Literature and Music and have fabled beginnings. That is a level we have yet to achieve in the North America, but in my opinion because Cathedrals remain fonts of our memory and imbued with our heritage, they are irrevocably woven into our consciousness, whether we are numbered among the faithful or not. Our work, like yours, embraces the talents and skills of a small staff and a vast army of more than 400 Volunteers, 225 of whom regularly tend the 14.6 Hectares of grounds and gardens that surround us. Their work allows us to keep these grounds open free of charge to a host of visitors throughout the year. I suspect that in your stewardship you also have armies of devoted volunteers, who lighten your workload by expressing their faith in their gifts of self. We share a respect for a high state of sustainability that allows us to hand off our responsibilities in due course; in as good if not better condition than when they were received. Like all your wonderful North American Cathedrals, Government House has a splendid history, so whether as a Dean or an Lieutenant Governor, I suspect we share exactly the same commitment the continuance of the institutions that we so proudly serve. As representative of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen of Canada, who heads the Anglican Churches you serve, I am delighted to welcome you here this afternoon and to offer you the thanks of our citizens for your devotion to duty and human service and for your dedication to the preservation of some of the grandest Cathedrals in our world.
