McLaren, pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church in Spencerville, Md., was to have spoken at the Tuesday morning session of the conference to be held Feb. 28-March 1 at Valley View Baptist Church in Louisville.
In the book, McLaren says that while there is no assurance that there is salvation to be found outside of Jesus, Christians should not jump to the conclusion that Jesus is the only way to salvation.
"I must add, though, that I don't believe making disciples must equal making adherents to the Christian religion. It may be advisable in many (not all!) circumstances to help people become followers of Jesus and remain within their Buddhist, Hindu, or Jewish contexts,” McLaren says in the book.
For his part, McLaren was gracious in the withdrawal and said he respected the decision.
Garland said that despite withdrawing McLaren, he would always strive to bring the very best and most thought-provoking speakers to the annual conference.

Chart of denominational heritage and history
The following chart shows a timeline of some of the events which lead to the multiplicity of Christian denominations. The chart is constructed to scale, so that each century takes the same amount of vertical space (with the exception of a slight vertical expansion for 1510-1530 to include the various Protestant denominational origins.) Note that there were long periods of time during which the interpretation of the Bible and doctrine were discussed and resolved without division into different communities. The work was compiled by: By Paul Flanagan and Robert Schihl

Free Will Baptist Church
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Free Will Baptist Church - a group of churches that share a common history, name, and an acceptance of the Armenian theology of free grace, free salvation, free will, based on the idea of general atonement, and an Amillenial view of Eschatology. Free Will Baptists share similar soteriological views with General Baptists Separate Baptists and some United Baptists The major difference between Free Will Baptists and the majority of Baptists (including the Southern Baptist Convention and her offshoots, as well as fundamentalist Baptists) is that Free Will Baptists do not hold to the traditional Baptist view of "perseverance of the saints" (commonly referred to as "once saved, always saved", where a person, once having made a "salvation decision", cannot by any means later end up "lost"). Instead, they teach that a person can "lose one's salvation". (The word "lose" is inaccurate, thoughthe concept is not of someone sinning occasionally and thus accidentally ending up "not saved", but instead of someone "repudiating" their initial choice by continual, willful sinning and an unwillingness to repent once confronted.) Free Will Baptists believe that once salvation is "lost", it can be regained through repentance.

1. Religious Transformations and Global Christian Integrity
Since Philip Jenkins' work, The Next Christendom, is addressed to North American audiences, it betrays a tendency to exaggerate differences between 'Northern' and 'Southern' forms of Christianity. It also perpetuates Lewis/Huntington-type readings of 'Christianity' vs 'Islam' and the inevitability of religous conflict. In my first paper, I critique these tendencies and also argue for a more nuanced understanding of 'religious conflict'. I locate global Christianity within the wider phenomenon of global religious transformations (stemming from the nineteenth century and occurring especially among Muslim and Hindu peoples) and the alternative modernities that we are seeing emerge. I propose Christian political responses that are necessary if our witness is to carry integrity and credibility.
2. Postcolonial Criticism and Christian Theology

Responding to Hurricane Katrina
The Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America unites in prayer for the people who have suffered grievous loss in the tragedy brought to our shores by Hurricane Katrina. We pray for those who mourn, who suffer, who have been rendered homeless, who search for loved ones and food, and for meaning to life in this time of trouble. We remember those who have perished, who now rest from their labors, and commit them to their Creator in hope of the resurrection. We pledge our solidarity with those who have begun the task of rebuilding broken walls and restoring stricken lives. In particular, we ask our members and Partner Congregations to hold in our prayers all the church relief agencies, workers and volunteers who are struggling to assist those in need, and to donate generously to these agencies, which include Baptist World Aid (703-790-8980, BWAid@bwanet.org
