83. Old Norse Names
A brief look at how the Vikings named their children, with lists of names from the Viking Age with meanings.
http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/ONNames.htm
Dear Viking Answer Lady,
How did the People of the North choose names for their children? Could you perhaps list some first names and then, perhaps, an explaination of surnames?
(signed) Viking Lady Without A Name
The PowerPoint notes for my class on Viking names and name construction is now available online as well:
Gentle Readers:
In general, parents named their children after a deceased relative or hero. In some way the child was believed to inherit with the name the gifts or personality of their namesake: this belief almost seems to have been one of reincarnation of the named relative in the new child once the name was bestowed. It was very common to give children the names of honored relatives, for the Northmen believed that children would partake of the virtues of the ones whose names they bore. Relatives recently dead, in particular, were thus remembered by their kindred, a custom resulting from a half belief that the spirit of the beloved dead lived again in the little child. Present day Scandinavians still "call up" deceased members of their families in this manner. (

85. The Norse Settlers In Greenland - A Short History
This site is dedicated to the Viking discovery of North America headed by Leif Eriksson.
http://www.greenland-guide.gl/leif2000/history.htm
TIME TABLE - The Norse History of Greenland 982-1500 YEAR: Erik the Red explores and names Greenland, after being outlawed for three years on account of manslaughter in Iceland. Southern Greenland is settled by Erik the Red as he leads the first settlers from Iceland. Erik the Red settles in Brattahlid (today's Qassiarsuk) which becomes the center of the Eastern Settlement. More settlers arrive from Scandinavia and they gradually settle the Southwest coast of Greenland from Cape Farewell to present-day Nuuk. The Norse population center around two major settlements, the Western and the Eastern. Leif Eriksson, son of Erik the Red, returns to Greenland from Norway, bringing along the first Christian missionary. Soon hereafter, the first Christian church on the North American continent, Thjódhildur's Church, is built at Brattahlid. Around 1000 Leif Eriksson discovers and names land in present-day Canada: Helluland, Markland and Vinland. Thus, he becomes the first person of European origin ever to set foot on the North American mainland. Greenland becomes a diocese of its own. The episcopal residence is placed at Gardar (present-day Igaliku) close to Brattahlid (today's Qassiarsuk).

Linking the norse Gods and Goddesses to the solar system.
http://comp.uark.edu/~sbabb/fs_solsys.html
Solar System
Eros
One of two binary stars in the system, only Eros still burns bright. But even here, among these Lost Worlds, the phenomenon of the Fading Suns continues. While the peasants and commoners alike are unable to tell that anything changes with Eros, Consul Thomas Constantinople (named after a famous scientest from Holy Terra's past) of the Guild of Engineers has discovered that every year the sun loses an abnormally large amount of energy. Thomas has attributed the unusual appearance of the star to being caused by a combination of factors; a hyperactive corona due to a strong magnetic field, its nature as a T Tauri star, and the fact that its embedded in its own dustcloud all combine to create the halo surrounding it. But despite his advanced knowledge, this 'Fading' phenomena is a mystery to him.
Svarozhich
The planet of fire, Svarozhich is located closest to the star Eros. As such, it is a planet of intense heat and scorching earth. An average-sized solid planet, Svarozhich lacks any form of life or water. Records discovered on Windfall hint that the OMNY Corporation may have created some advanced microorganisms that were able to live on the planet, but so far no proof has been discovered.
Freya
Freya is a gaseous planet, roughly twice as large as Windfall. It's atmosphere consists largely of acidic gases and helium, constantly mixing inside moon-sized storms. No records have yet been discovered of Freya's core, and it is assumed that even the arrogant explorers of the Second Republic knew better than to challenge the raging storms of Freya.

A Simple Guide to Creating Old Norse Names
by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Friedemann)
Sara L. Friedemann This guide will show you how to construct a typical Norse name from the Viking Age. I have listed common elements and structures of names, but not an exhaustive list of all possibilities. The information in this guide is taken from "The Old Norse Name" by Geirr Bassi Haraldsson (G. Fleck). A list of masculine and feminine names taken from this source can be found at Viking Names Found in the In this guide, I have used the standard Old Norse forms of the names.
Name Structures
There are two ways of forming Norse names; the most common is using a given name with the addition of a patronymic byname, or a byname based on relationship. To create a patronym, the suffix -son 'son' or 'daughter' is added to the genitive form of the father's name. The guide below, taken from G. Fleck's book, shows how this can be done. -i -a: Snorri Snorrason -a -u: Sturla Sturluson -nn -ns: Sveinn Sveinsson -ll -ls: Ketill Ketilsson -rr -rs: Geirr Geirsson -r -s -ir -is: Grettir Grettisson Names that end in and form a genitive with - ar -ar: The other way to form a name was the use of a nickname. In Norse culture, these were not always very complimentary; in the list of nicknames linked below, there are things such as:

Old Norse Religion
Early Volsung History
By: Eric A. Anderson The most popular saga in the Norse myths was the Volsung Saga, so popular in fact that it still inspires stories today. Many people have read J.R.R. Tolkien or heard Richard Wagners Ring Cycle, and know that this saga inspired these stories. One person in fact stated that this saga is as important to Scandinavia as the legend of King Arthur is to the English. If you look into this saga, you start to see some similarities to that famous legend. Where to start? Where else but the beginning. I used a book written by Jesse L. Byock for the major source of what I am writing from his excellent book titled, what else, The Saga of the Volsungs: The Norse Epic of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer.
After Sigi was outlawed, Odin came to him and guided him on a long journey where he left him with warriors and long ships for raiding. From this small army, Sigi was able to take control of a country named Hunland and married a woman of noble birth. After a time she gave birth to a son which they named Rerir.
Sigi's most trusted men where his wife's brothers, who secretly envied him, and plotted to overthrow him. One day Sigi went out with some men and where ambushed and killed by his wife's brothers, and they took control of Hunland.

Sacred Texts
The Norse Discovery of America
by Arthur Middleton Reeves,
North Ludlow Beamish,
and Rasmus B. Anderson
Contents
Start Reading This is a collection of texts relating to the voyages of the Norse west to America. A thousand years ago, nearly half a millennium before Columbus, the Norse extended their explorations from Iceland and Greenland to the shores of Northeastern North America, and, possibly, beyond. This volume from the Norroena collection contains all known sagas and documentary fragments which relate to this legendary exploration. It also contains analysis of the texts which should be read with a critical eye. While it is now certain that the Norse reached Nova Scotia, the claims in this book that they reached as far south as Bostonnot to mention Georgia or South Carolinaare still controversial. There is also tangential discussion of whether the Irish managed to get to America prior to the Norse, an even more contentious assertion. Regardless, the texts in this three-part volume open up a window into a vivid era, and give glimpses of religion, society and travel in the period when the Norse were actively exploring the North Atlantic. They contain one of the only detailed descriptions of a pagan women's divination ritual, and deal with the expansion of Christianity from both sides. There are bone-chilling stories of disease, murder and jealousy in the small communities on the leading edge of Viking colonization. Reading these sagas inspires deep understanding of the life and motivations of the Scandinavian sea rovers and respect for their accomplishments in the field of exploration.

Aegir
Balder

One of the Aesir, his name means "The Glorious". He was also called the "god of tears" and the "white as". Balder, the son of Odin and Frigg, was described as a very handsome and wise god. Some consider him to be a god of light since he was so bright, light shined from him.
Balder's wife was Nanna and they had a son named Forseti. Balder and Nanna lived in Breidablik [The Broad-Gleaming], where nothing unclean could be and there were "fewest baneful runes". Breidablik had a silver roof on golden pillars.
At one point Balder had a foreboding dream. Odin rode to Hel's realm to wake a volva from the dead to find out the meaning of Balder's dream. She foretold Balder's death by Hod (Hodur), his fraternal twin. Frigg asked all things to swear not to hurt Balder but didn't ask the mistletoe because it was so young. Loki, diguised as an old woman, visited Frigg and found out Balder was invunerable to everything but mistletoe. Loki made a dart out of mistletoe and tricked the blind god Hod into throwing it at Balder all the other gods were playing games by throwing various items at Balder , thus killing him. Hermod rode to Hel's realm and got her to agree to let Balder return to the living if all things would weep for him. One giantess named Thokk, Loki in disguise, refused to weep for Balder, so he remained dead and was cremated on his funeral boat, hringhorni. He is supposed to come back to life after the Ragnarok. Bor
Son of Buri. His wife was Bestla, daughter of the frost giant Bolthorn. Bor was the father of Odin, Vili, and Ve.

http://www.wizardrealm.com/norse/index.html
What is Norse Religion? Norse Religion, or Heathenry, is the modern-day practice of the ancient tribal belief systems of the Northern European peoples; the Teutons (continental Germanic tribes) and the Norse (Scandinavian and Gothic tribes). Although their deities were pretty much the same, they were pronounced differently among the various tribes. Thus you have Odin among the Norse, and Wotan or Wodan among the Teutons; Thor or Thonar among the Norse, and Donar or Donner among the Teutons. A branch of Asatru refers to itself as "Folkish Asatru". This particular denomination of Asatru claims to be the one "true" Asatru, descended from the ancient Northern European religion. Members of Folkish Asatru claim that bloodline is the strongest determinant of whether or not a person may practice the Norse Heathen faith. Although they claim not to be racist (actually, not to be supremacist), their fundamental practices are based upon race. Folkish Asatru tend to be intolerant of other heathen practices and of people of non-Nordic/Germanic descent practicing Asatru. Yet another branch of heathenry calls itself "Odinism." It is very close to Asatru, but with more emphasis on magical working rather than religious practices. I find that more solitary practitioners are drawn to this form rather than to Asatru, even though the two are so close in their practices as to be nigh-well undistinguishable. Again, I find the main difference to be upon the emphasis of magickal working rather than ceremonial religious ritual. Unfortunately, many people who profess to be Odinists use the term for their own political agendas of racism and White Supremacy. This is not what this form of worship is about; Racism is a political agenda, not a religious one. Don't let anyone try to tell you differently.
