Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
In the thirteenth century a Japanese monk named Nichiren (1222-1282) was responsible for bringing a new perspective to the practice of Buddhism. The focus for this practice came to rest on reciting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo , which can be roughly translated as 'Honor to the Lotus Sutra of the True Teaching'. Nichiren believed that the essence of the Buddha's teachings resided in the Lotus Sutra

Behind the SGI’s decision to issue the Gohonzon
On September 7, 1993, adopting a proposal from Sendo Narita, the chief priest of Joen-ji, a temple in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, the SGI announced that it would start issuing Gohonzon, reproduced from a Gohonzon transcribed in 1720 by Nichikan, the 26 th high priest of Taiseki-ji, to its members worldwide. Many SGI members who practiced without the Gohonzon since Nichiren Shoshu’s refusal to grant them the Gohonzon were overjoyed at the news. And many others, filled with hope, have been looking forward to a bright future of the spread of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism ad a flourishing of the Soka Renaissance toward a world that embraces truly humanistic ideals.

Proclamation of True Buddhism
After leaving Seicho-ji, Rencho went to Kamakura, seat of the shogunate government. Since Kamakura. was the center of political power, it attracted priests from Kyoto, and Buddhist temples had been built there in quick succession. The Jodo, Zen and Ritsu sects were most prevalent, while Tendai, Shingon and Kegon were hardly in evidence. It was here that Rencho, began his studies to determine exactly which sects taught what and how each related to his own enlightenment.

Nichiren Buddhism
The distinguishing practice of Nichiren and Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, two similar sects based on the teachings of the fiery Japanese reformer Nichiren (1222-82), is the chanting of the phrase Namu Myoho Renge Kyo : "I trust in the Sutra of the Lotus of the Wonderful Law" (or Lotus Sutra). A fisherman's son who became a monk of the Tendai sect at 15, Nichiren came to the conclusion that the only true Buddhism was that of the Lotus Sutra, which contained the words of the Buddha himself, as opposed to other schools based on the writings of Buddhist adepts or commentators. But Nichiren went further, attacking the traditional doctrines of Buddhism, and teaching that anyone who chanted Namu Myoho Renge Kyo would achieve paradise on earth, for which he was ostracized and persecuted. Nichiren's beliefs were strongly nationalistic; he felt that Japan could prosper only through teaching the Lotus Sutra, and that he was not only the nation's savior but also an incarnation of two bodhisattvas. Followers of Nichiren today imagine Japan as the center of a Buddha-world that will in time encompass the globe a truly universal religion. The Nichiren chant is often accompanied by drumming, something which may have helped attract a number of prominent American musicians to its practice, most notably jazz pianist Herbie Hancock and pop singer Tina Turner. Nichiren Shoshu developed in the 20th century based on the teachings of a Nichiren disciple named Nikko. A modern lay organization of the Nichiren sect, called the

was the founder of True Buddhism. Unlike many religious founders, he left behind a major body of written works called "Gosho" which embody his distinctive understanding of Buddhism and the Lotus Sutra
Birthplace in Kominato
Nichiren was born on February 16, 1222, in the small fishing village of Kominato in Tojo in Awa Province in what is presently Chiba (see map) Prefecture . This village is located at the tip of the "Boso" Peninsula. It was and is a fishing village. And though the adult Nichiren was, as a Buddhist strictly vegetarian (see this page:( http://webjapanese.com/column/english/990506.html" ) it was a place that made it's living by fish and by seaweed (Laver). Later in life he fondly recalls eating Laver, and so we know that his life in Kominato wasn't all privation. Kominato now hosts a nice marine acquarium and his birth place has become a tourist attraction. It is no longer the isolated place it once was.
Humble Origins
Jacqueline Stone notes, that he alone of all the founders of sects in medieval Buddhism (at least in Japan) was of common origins. In later life he would refer to himself as a "son of lowly people," "born of a candala (outcaste) family," and the "child of a fisherman

    Nichiren Shonin and Mt. Minobu
    Rev. Teijo Kunugi
Chief Director of Propagation Department of Kuonji Temple On September 8, 1282, Nichiren Shonin left Mt. Minobu, where he had lived for 9 years. In December, 1277, when he was 56, he fell ill. Though his condition improved once, it took a turn for the worse at the end of 1281, and led to the loss of his appetite.
Worried about his condition, his disciples and Hakii Sanenaga, the local lord, recommended that Nichiren Shonin go to the Hitachi hot springs, which famous for the treatment of stomach illnesses. Finally, accepting their recommendation, Nichiren Shonin decided to leave Mt. Minobu. It was the first time he had left the mountain in 9 years.
Halfway through the trip to Hitachi, Nichiren Shonin and his attendants dropped in at the house of Munenaka Ikegami, in Ikegami Village, Musashi Province (present-day Tokyo). Normally this would have been a trip of about 7 days, but their trip took 11 days. It was September 18.
The next day Nichiren Shonin dictated a letter to his disciple Nikko for Lord Hakii Sanenaga. "We have arrived at Ikegami safely, without encountering any mishaps on the way.... I wish to make a return journey. It may not materialize, however, since I am not well. I do not have words to express my gratitude for your religious devotion and contributions of offering these past nine years to me, who is considered a nuisance throughout Japan. Therefore, I want to ask you to erect my tombstone in the valley of Mt. Minobu wherever I die."

He was an extremely controversial figure in his own time, and his Buddhism continues to be controversial today. During his lifetime, he sought reform of Buddhism within Japan. Nichiren believed that the teachings contained in the Lotus Sutra were given by the Buddha Shakyamuni. Not all scholars today believe that the Lotus Sutra was written by Shakyamuni. Many believe it was written by one of his later followers. One central theme in the Lotus Sutra, which was emphasized by Nichiren and is emphasized in Nichiren Buddhism today, is that enlightenment may be attained in a single lifetime. He was born in Kominato, which today lies in the Japanese prefecture of Chiba. He began his formal Buddhist study at the Seichoji Temple at eleven, where he eventually became a priest. It was at the Seichoji Temple that he first came to believe in the pre-eminence of the Lotus Sutra. On April 28, 1253, he declared his intention to preach the Lotus Sutra and

Nichiren Daishonin Nichiren Daishonin was a 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk (1222-1282) who founded his own sect of Buddhism based solely on the Lotus Sutra, the highest teachings of the Buddha. "Nichi" means sun and "ren" means lotus flower. Daishonin means "great sage." Nichiren's teachings are comprised of many letters and essays written to various people, and collectively called the "Gosho." during his lifetime, Nichiren inscribed many Gohonzons (Objects of Worship) which he bestowed on various people. over 120 of Nichiren's Gohonzons are still extant. Nichiren is considered (and himself claimed) to be the Bodhisattva Jogyo. Bodhisattva Jogyo was entrusted by Shakyamuni with the propagation of the Lotus Sutra in the Latter Day of the Law. is Nichiren the "True Buddha"? Simple reading of the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren's writings shows that the Buddha revealed his own Eternal nature, and that Nichiren (having studied the Lotus Sutra extensively and can thus be considered an expert on it) revered Shakyamuni as both the "Eternal" and the "Original" Buddha. why are these distinctions so important?

    Dear Reader,
This article was written from my Buddhist point of view. However, I hope that whatever your belief, these words will inspire you to keep thoughts of peace on your mind. - LaVora

    A Time For Deeper Faith
The United States' led war against the nation of Iraq is now upon us. Therefore, I believe I need to deepen my faith that my prayers for peace will work. It's hard to have faith when news reports and other people seem to say that war must be. But I must overcome my doubts about the power of my life and strengthen my prayer for peace.
I am reminded of what the 13th century Japanese Buddhist teacher, Nichiren, once wrote for a believer named Nichigen-nyo:"As for [Nichigen-nyo's] prayers, I suspect that her faith may be weak, even though she does not doubt the Lotus Sutra. I have found that even those who appear to believe just as the sutra teaches may not actually have strong faith...The fact that her prayers have gone unanswered is like a strong bow with a weak bowstring, or a fine sword in the hands of a coward. It is in no sense the fault of the Lotus Sutra." (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, p. 489). Buddhist Teachings
