Shakyamuni is also referred to as Lord Shakya. The first recorded Buddha ("Enlightened One") who lived about 3000 years ago in India. He was a prince named Siddhartha Gautama who renounced his claim to the throne in order to embark on a religious life, because of a deep desire to solve the questions of the four sufferings (birth, old age, sickness and death). He is said to have achieved enlightenment at the age of 30. He passed on his enlightenment to as many as possible, at first using "expedient means" and "provisional" teachings (Sutras), culminating by revealing the true eternal nature of his enlightenment in the 16th chapter of the Lotus Sutra. He passed away at around the age of 80. who is the "Eternal Buddha"? the Eternal Buddha is Shakyamuni at the moment that he revealed his eternal nature for the first time. this is told in the 16th chapter of the Lotus Sutra. The Gohonzon (a scroll, the main Object of Worship in Nichiren Buddhism) illustrates this "moment in time" when the Buddha revealed his eternal nature and the truth of all things, entrusting them to the Bodhisattvas of the Earth, during the Ceremony in the Air. if Shakyamuni is the Eternal Buddha, why did Nichiren place Shakyamuni beside the Daimoku on the Gohonzon?

He was an extremely controversial figure in his own time, and his Buddhism continues to be controversial today. During his lifetime, he sought reform of Buddhism within Japan.
Nichiren believed that the teachings contained in the Lotus Sutra were given by the Buddha Shakyamuni. Not all scholars today believe that the Lotus Sutra was written by Shakyamuni. Many believe it was written by one of his later followers.
One central theme in the Lotus Sutra, which was emphasized by Nichiren and is emphasized in Nichiren Buddhism today, is that enlightenment may be attained in a single lifetime.
He was born in Kominato, which today lies in the Japanese prefecture of Chiba. He began his formal Buddhist study at the Seichoji Temple at eleven, where he eventually became a priest. It was at the Seichoji Temple that he first came to believe in the pre-eminence of the Lotus Sutra. On April 28, 1253, he declared his intention to preach the Lotus Sutra and Nam Myoho Renge Kyo as the true Buddhism. At the same time he changed his name from Rencho to Nichi-ren. "Nichi" means "sun", and "ren" means "Lotus".
He began in the city of Kamakura, where he petitioned rulers to have his form of Buddhism instituted as the state religion and all other sects forbidden. He wrote a religious treatise called the Rissho Ankoku Ron (On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land), in which he attributed a series of natural disasters including tsunamis and earthquakes as well as foreign invasion (i.e., the Mongols) to the improper practice of the Buddhism.

Dobbelaere's book Soka Gakkai: From Lay Movement to Religion In later chapters Dobbelaere discusses the characteristics of Soka Gakkai members, including those in Europe; their religious practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo ; and the ways the organization supports members' study and practice of Nichiren Buddhism. Most interesting is the way that Soka Gakkai's teachings attract certain sorts of individuals to the movement. In Europe "twenty-percent of the SG membership works in social services and the arts" (p. 31). This Dobbelaere attributes to Nichiren Buddhism's "general ethic" which "stresses the importance of service to others, encourages humanitarian responsibility, and underlines the supreme importance of human life" (pp. 31-32). In general, Soka Gakkai members in America and Europe are found to be "transmodern," a term defined by Hammond and Machacek in their volume

Members of the SGI practice the Buddhism taught by Nichiren , a 13th Century Japanese priest whose philosophy centered around the final teaching of the first historically recognized Buddha (known as Siddhartha Gautama or Shakyamuni Buddha ). This teaching, called the Lotus Sutra , declares that all living beings have the potential to attain enlightenment or Buddhahood. This responsibility is furthered by an understanding of the simultaneity of cause and effect. Each thought, word and deed has an immediate effect both on the individual and on his or her environment. The goal SGI members try to achieve is to manifest Buddhahood, or enlightenment, in their lives, which will tap their creative potential as individuals and, in so doing, create thriving and peaceful families, work places and communities. The eventual goal is, through the gradual "human revolution" of the individual, to create peace and prosperity in societies throughout the world.

The SGI-USA (Soka Gakkai International USA) is an American Buddhist organization whose mission is to contribute to peace, culture and education based on the philosophy and ideals of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin. Members of the Soka Gakkai practice the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin for their personal enlightenment and for the development of a humane and peaceful society. The Soka Gakkai was founded in Japan in 1930 and has developed into an international organization, Soka Gakkai International (SGI), with members in more than 177 countries. Soka is a Japanese word meaning "value creation"; Gakkai means "society". In 1991, SGI separated from the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood, and is dedicated to the creation of a humanistic and non-authoritarian organization based on equality and respect for all life. Members practice the Buddhism of Nichiren as lay believers. SGI-USA provides legally-sanctioned wedding and memorial services for those members who choose Buddhist ceremonies.

The Site for Information on Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism in North America Nichiren Shoshu is the 750 year old orthodox Buddhist denomination centered at Head Temple, Taisekiji, at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Japan. Nichiren Shoshu has temples and centers worldwide and actively propagates the teachings of the True Buddha, Nichiren Daishonin, who made His advent in Japan in 1222. The practice of Nichiren Shoshu brings powerful benefits and positive changes to the lives of those who practice it. The ultimate goals are the attainment of enlightenment by the individual and, through widely spreading True Buddhism, the establishment of a purified world where all people can enjoy happy lives together.
The daily practice consists of chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and reciting portions of the Lotus Sutra to the fundamental Object of Worship called the Gohonzon. There are 6 Temples in the United States and many local area meeting places. All are invited to come learn about Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism and experience its beneficial power. INTRODUCTION
This pamphlet attempts to outline some key elements of what has become known in the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) as the "temple issue" events and information related to Nichiren Shoshu's attacks on the SGI, and its continued efforts to undermine SGI's movement. When the priesthood of Nichiren Shoshu began a series of measures against the SGI at the beginning of this decade intended to disband and destroy the organization, it may have been shocking and disturbing, but it was not surprising from the standpoint of Nichiren Daishonin's teachings and of history. Many incidents and events going back to the Soka Gakkai's inception before World War II indicated that within the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood there existed the potential for hatred and jealousy toward lay believers. It was evident in the attitude and behavior of more than a few priests. As the Gakkai's growth and influence increased, so did the number of priests who harbored such an attitude until, eventually, it reached the office of high priest.
