The Illness within Nichiren Buddhism
or, Shoju and Shakubuku
Introduction
These two methods of shoju and shakubuku are like water and fire. Fire hates water, water detests fire. The practitioner of shoju laughs with scorn at shakubuku. The practitioner of shakubuku laments at the thought of shoju. When the country is full of evil people without wisdom, then shoju is the primary method to be applied, as described in the "Peaceful Practices" chapter. But at a time when there are many people of perverse views who slander the Law, then shakubuku should come first, as described in the "Never Disparaging" chapter. - The Opening of the Eyes, part 2 Fellow Practitioners of the Buddhism of Nichiren: Something is wrong in the world of Nichiren Buddhism. No matter the school of Nichiren Buddhism in question, the promise of the practice of this Buddhism is enlightenment, the opening up of our Buddha wisdom and bodhisattva compassion. And Nichiren reminded us that daily life is Buddhism, and Buddhism is in accord with reason. Nonetheless, if you look at any reasonable sampling of the message boards, mailing lists, and newsgroups related to Nichiren Buddhism, you will see that many of these forums wallow in hatred and anger - and perhaps ignorance, as well. Of course, some argue that the internet is a poor sampling of Nichiren Buddhists; this may very well be true. However, Nichiren Buddhists active in internet forums have a special responsibility. The internet is rapidly becoming (and for some groups, already is) the main source of information for society. Many people, when looking for information on a new subject, turn to the internet to thoroughly research that subject from all available angles. Within the next ten years - perhaps even within the next five - just about every person in the most impressionable age groups will be obtaining their information and forming their opinions based on the variegated landscape that is the internet.

Nichiren Buddhism is generally noted for its opposition to other forms of Buddhism and an evangelical streak as evinced by some schools' practice of shakubuku , efforts to convert others by refuting their current beliefs and convincing them of the validity of Nichiren's teachings.

About Nichiren Buddhism
Nichiren Buddhism is one of the foremost schools of Buddhist thought in the world today. It centers on one of the last teachings of the historic Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama or Shakyamuni. This teaching, called the Lotus Sutra, decares that all living beings, regardless of gender or intelligence, have the potential to attain "Buddhahood," a state of life characterized by compassion, courage, wisdom, joy and life force.
Thus people can use Nichiren Buddhism in an everyday, practical way, to both deal with the realities of their busy daily lives and also to actively engage with others and ultimately contribute to the betterment of society and the world at large.

Heard of the phrase 'nam myoho renge kyo' but didn't know how to say it?
Wanted something 'more' in your life but wasn't sure quite what that 'more' was?
Then maybe this is what you've been looking for.
Most people in the world today who practice the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin are members of an organisation called SGI (Soka Gakkai International).  Soka Gakkai literally means Value Creation, therefore it the Buddhist Society for the Creation of Value.
All SGI activities are based on the teachings and the individual practice of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin.  This 13th Century Japanese sage centred his philosophy on what is traditionally thought to be one of the last recorded teachings of the first historically recorded Buddha (variously known as Guatama Siddhartha or Shakyamuni Buddha) which was named the Lotus Sutra.  The Lotus Sutra declares that all living beings regardless of gender or intellectual capacity, can attain the enlightened state of life within their given lifetime.
In common with other Buddhist teachings, individual enlightenment is grasped through the profound realisation of the inseparability of the individual and their spiritual and physical environment and their ability to powerfully influence both.

The best way to begin an overview of Nichiren Shu missionary efforts is with the text of the Monument for Overseas Ministers that is located at Mt. Minobu.
Text of the Inscription on the Monument for Overseas Ministers at Mt. Minobu that was dedicated on April 26, 1994:
It was the wish of our Founder, Nichiren Shonin, to have the entire world shine with the light of the Buddha and to save all the people with the teachings of the Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma. This monument is dedicated to the illustrious memory of Nichiren Shu ministers who braved the strange lands overseas for the realization of the wish of our Founder for the propagation of the Wonderful Dharma around the world. Looking into history, we can detect the footprints of those who dedicated themselves overseas to the propagation of the Sacred Title of the Wonderful Dharma, "Namu Myoho Renge Kyo," despite overwhelming pains and difficulties. May their footprints never disappear but shine forever brilliantly.

Nichiren Buddhism in the 20th Century
    by Ryuei Michael McCormick
The 20th century would prove to be a difficult time for Nichiren Buddhism.
Some Buddhists did not simply comply reluctantly with State Shinto. Rather, some enthusiastically promoted a movement called "Imperial Way Buddhism" (Kodo Bukkyo). Imperial-way Buddhism taught that Japanese Buddhism was superior to all other forms and then identified Buddhism with the state and the state with the emperor. To worship and serve the emperor was the same as worshiping and serving the Three Treasures of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Brian Victoria reports that Takasa Nichiko, the administrative head of the Nichiren Shu, and other leading Nichiren Shu clergy formed "The Association for the Practice of Imperial-Way Buddhism" (Kodo Bukkyo Gyodo Kai) in 1938. This association even identified the Gohonzon as the Japanese emperor: "...the principle image of adoration in imperial-way Buddhism is not Buddha Shakyamuni who appeared in India, but his majesty, the emperor..." (pp. 84-85, Zen at War) As will be seen, even before 1938 the idea that there was an intrinsic unity between Buddhism and Imperial Japan were already in circulation, especially among those advocating a return to the more hard line methods of shakubuku in propagating Nichiren Buddhism.
Honda Nissho (1867-1931) was also an advocate of the unity of Buddhism and the state under the emperor and a return to the method of shakubuku against the other schools of Buddhism. He was a priest of the Myomanji-ha but he fell afoul of the administrative head of that lineage and was disrobed in 1892 because he refused to allow for the enshrinement of other deities besides the Omandala. He was reinstated in 1895, however, because he was needed to write a summary of the doctrines of the Myomanji-ha. However, the section addressing Nichiren's critiques of the other schools of Buddhism was edited out of the published version without his permission. His response was to attempt to unify all the Nichiren schools against the other schools. In 1898 the Myomanji-ha became the

It is also popular in the West and has a fast growing membership in the UK. Nichiren Buddhism differs from other schools of Buddhism in focusing on this world, and in its view that it is the only correct tradition. It also emphasises the importance of individuals taking responsibility for improving themselves. Although it can be seen as a highly self-focused religion, followers of Nichiren Buddhism believe that individual empowerment and inner transformation contribute, in turn, to a better and more peaceful world. The singer Tina Turner is one of its most high profile followers. In the 1993 movie What's love got to do with it , an autobiographical film about Turner's rise to stardom and her relationship with her abusive husband, she chanted the Buddhist Nam Myoho Renge Kyo mantra.

Theravada Page 3 of 10 Printable version of this page Early History Nichiren Buddhism began in medieval Japan. It has its roots in the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin (1222-1282), a 13th century Japanese monk who tried to reform Buddhism and Japanese society. In many ways he was a Buddhist Martin Luther who lived centuries before the great Protestant reformer. His teaching was based on the Mahayana sutra (scripture) known as the Lotus Sutra. The book of 28 chapters of poems and stories is the main scripture of Nichiren Buddhism. The Lotus Sutra was probably compiled over 200 years and completed around 50-150 CE. Nichiren came to regard the Lotus Sutra as a supremely authoritative scripture. He taught that it should always be read and applied to the contemporary context to the time and place in which the reader happened to be. The Lotus Sutra has influenced Japanese Buddhism in general, and not just Nichiren Buddhism.

    Nichiren Buddhism
Nichiren Buddhism is a form of Japanese Buddhism that emphasizes repeated recitation of the mantra namu myoho renge kyo ("salutation to the Lotus Sutra") for health, happiness and enlightenment. Nichiren Buddhists believe it is possible to attain enlightenment in a single lifetime through practice of "True Buddhism" (i.e., Nichiren). Nichiren Buddhism has divided into several branches, the largest of which are Nichiren Shu, Nichiren Shoshu, and Soka Gokkai International.
    History of Nichiren Buddhism
Nichiren Daishonin (1222-1282) Nichiren Buddhism is named for its founder, Nichiren Daishonin (1222-1282), a Japanese monk. The son of a poor fisherman, Nichiren became a monk in the Tendai school. He became frustrated by the many paths of salvation that were taught, and left the Tendai monastery at Mount Hiei for 10 years in search of the true Buddhist path. Nichiren's independent studies led him to conclude that the Lotus Sutra contained the only true way to salvation and that chanting the phrase namu myoho renge kyo ("salutation to the Lotus Sutra") is the way to attain enlightenment. Nichiren also taught that his time, characterized by political unrest, was the period of degeneration (or age of "latter dharma," known as
