Opinion from the July 14, 2005 edition Moderate Muslims' citizenship duty By Mansoor Ijaz LONDON The trust that binds citizens of free societies together was violated last week when suspected Islamist terrorists set off a wave of bombs at the height of London's morning rush hour, killing more than 50 people and injuring 700. This tragedy follows at least 17 other bombings worldwide linked to Al Qaeda since 2002, according to Robert Pape, a University of Chicago political scientist who compiles data on the subject. The planning and execution of last Thursday's bombings indicate that Al Qaeda continues to function efficiently. For the perpetrators of London's attacks to escape the notice of the world's most formidable domestic counterterrorism service before the strikes underscores their resolve and cunning.

Identifying Moderate Muslims
by Daniel Pipes
New York Sun
November 23, 2004
There is good news to report: The idea that "militant Islam is the problem, moderate Islam is the solution" is finding greater acceptance over time. But there is also bad news, namely growing confusion over who really is a moderate Muslim. This means that the ideological side of the war on terror is making some, but only limited, progress. The good news : Anti-Islamist Muslims have found their voice since September 11. Their numbers include distinguished academics such as Azar Nafisi (Johns Hopkins), Ahmed al-Rahim (formerly of Harvard), Kemal Silay (Indiana), and Bassam Tibi (Göttingen). Important Islamic figures like Ahmed Subhy Mansour and Muhammad Hisham Kabbani are speaking out. Organizations are coming into existence. The

Don't Attack Us - We're Sikhs, Not Muslims
In this column, I want to address an educational failure that is not receiving the kind of attention that it deserves. The failure comes to mind as a result of reading some advertisements by Sikh organizations in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The gist of the advertisements was a plea: Sikhs are not Muslims so please stop attacking and harassing Sikhs in the United States. To be sure, it is unconscionable that anyone should be attacking or harassing Sikhs in the United States at any time. It is just as unconscionable for anyone to be attacking Muslims simply on the basis of their ethnic and/or religious similarities to terrorists. We should not be attacking Sikhs, but the reason has nothing to do with mistaken identity. Think of the reactions of some Germans to the Nazi atrocities in Hitler's reign of terror against Jews. The non-Jewish reactions were "Don't confiscate our property - we are not Jews." The property, and later the lives of thousands of non-Jewish Germans should not have been taken later because there was no defensible reason to take it. My purpose in pointing this out is not to criticize the Sikhs. Quite the contrary, their organizations would not have paid for these advertisements if they did not believe in their effectiveness with the American people generally. The unwitting implication of their advertisement is that it is acceptable to attack our Muslim population, which it isn't. In other words, the point I wish to make is that the American people generally were not (or were not deemed to be) aware of the fundamental reason for not tolerating the indefensible attacks on the Sikhs. In my opinion, this tells us something about education in the United States. Despite all the formal education received by the American people, their understanding generally of the constitutional and moral basis of our civil liberties and our political system is minimal.

GAZA CITY (CNN) New Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi delivered a fiery speech at a memorial service Sunday for his slain predecessor, blasting Israel for its Palestinian policies and calling U.S. President Bush "an enemy of Muslims." "Bush is the enemy of God, the enemy of Islam, an enemy of Muslims," Rantisi said at Gaza's Islamic University, where thousands had gathered to remember Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, who along with seven others was killed in a targeted Israeli airstrike on Monday. He said it came as no surprise that the United States which he said consistently sides with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's government vetoed a United Nations' resolution condemning the killing of Yassin. "America declared war against God. Sharon declared war against God and God declared war against America, Bush and Sharon," Rantisi said. "The war of God continues against them and I can see the victory coming up from the land of Palestine by the hand of Hamas."

Ecards at www.soundvision.com Ramadan -a month of obligatory daily fasting in Islam is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Daily fasts begin at dawn and end with sunset. Special nightly prayers called, Taraweeh prayers are held. The entire Quran is recited in these prayers in Mosques all around the world. This month provides an opportunity for Muslims to get closer to God. This is a month when a Muslim should try to: See not what displeases Allah Speak no evil Hear no evil Do no evil Look to Allah with fear and hope " O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become God-fearing." (The Quran, 2:183) T he Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. And he who passes Lailat al-Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven (Bukhari, Muslim). Ramadan ends with a day long celebration known as Eidul-Fitr . Eidul-Fitr begins with a special morning prayer in grand Mosques and open grounds of towns and cities of the world. the prayer is attended by men, women and children with their new or best clothes. A special charity, known as Zakatul-Fitr is given out prior to the prayer. The rest of the day is spent in visiting relatives and friends, giving gifts to children and eating.

Recent Basic Beliefs of Islam: Five Pillars, Jihad, and Beyond It is impossible to intelligently discuss a religion without having some clear idea as to what the religion teaches and what the faithful believe (and what differences there may be between the two, if any). Not all religions are the same - understanding one doesn't automatically mean that you understand the other, even if they are closely related. Islam: Basic Introduction to Methodology and Concepts Of necessity, these documents on Islam does not paint a complete picture of the full breadth and depth of Islamic history and theology. More complete works on the subject can fill numerous bookcases, but there is not room for that much information here. This is only supposed to be a basic overview in an effort to introduce people to new concepts. Islam and the Sacred: Sacred Texts, Places, and Times

The-Qur'an Reminds
Your God is One God, there is no God but He; the Merciful, the Compassionate.
(To guide) those who use their reason (to this truth) there are many signs in the creation of the heaven and the earth, in the constant alternation of night and day, in the vessels which speed across the sea carrying the things which are of profit to men, in the water which Allah sends down from the heaven thereby quickening the earth after its death, in the scattering of every kind of animal in the earth, and in the courses of the winds and the clouds pressed into service between heaven and earth.
Yet among men some take others as equals to Allah and love them as Allah alone should be loved; but those who believe, they love Allah more than all else. If only the wrong-doers were to perceive now - as they will perceive when they will see the chastisement - that all power belongs to Allah alone, and that Allah is severe in chastisement. London attacks failed to spark U.S. backlash against religion or followers
Alex Johnson Reporter MSNBC Alex Johnson Reporter Profile The deadly July bombings in London put Americans on alert but created no backlash against American Muslims or Islam, according to a poll released Tuesday. The poll also showed a decline in the percentage of Americans who believe Islam is more violent than other religions. But the survey found that the percentage of Americans who have a favorable opinion of Muslim Americans continues to rise, from 45 percent in March 2001  - before the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States - to 51 percent in July 2003 to 55 percent today. That's almost exactly the same percentage who hold the same view of evangelical Christians (at 57 percent), compared to 77 percent for Jews and 73 percent for Catholics. And the more a respondent knows about Islam, the more likely he or she is to regard Muslim Americans favorably, the survey found, indicating that efforts to raise public knowledge about Islam since 2001 are paying off. There are fears for the safety of Muslim women
The leaders of Scotland's Muslim community have been meeting to assess the extent of racist threats and attacks suffered since terrorists struck at the heart of the US. Around the world many followers of Islam have reported heightened hostility since hijacked airliners were flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The American authorities have named Osama Bin Laden, who is a Muslim, as their prime suspect and that has triggered a backlash against followers of Islamic religions. World leaders, including the US President George W Bush, have condemned violence against Muslims and have appealed for calm.
Haq Ghani says tensions have risen recently
However, Muslim leaders met in Glasgow on Wednesday evening to discuss the situation in Scotland where some abuse has been reported. They also drew up an action plan to help change the attitudes of those who hold them responsible for the terrorism.
