Of all of the religions in America, Mormonism is probably the most maligned and least understood. Most people seem to have images of men living on compounds in Utah with 8 wives and 43 children. Either that, or they think of the Osmonds (which is even more disturbing). Allow us to burst your bubble: there are actually over 10 million Mormons worldwide (including 6 million in the U.S.), and Mormonism has one of the highest conversion rates of any religion in the world (they recruit better than any basketball coach). So read on and discover what it means to be Mormon. By the way, the decision to convert to a religion is a serious one, so please keep in mind that the humor used in this SYW is not meant to make a mockery of Mormonism. But you, being the sharp, inquisitive person you are, already knew that. The first thing you should know is that every Mormon is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's the exact same thing. Look how fast you learn!

Onward, Mormon soldiers
How the Latter-day Saints could make Mitt Romney president
BY ADAM REILLY
If there’s a moment that marks the beginning of the LDS ascendancy, it came in 1979, when right-wing Christian fundamentalist Jerry Falwell announced the formation of the Moral Majority, the anti-choice, anti-woman, anti-gay, pro-school-prayer group that reshaped American politics. In Falwell’s coalition, individual Mormons joined forces with Christian fundamentalists and conservative Catholics in an attempt to make American politics more godly. The oft-isolated LDS Church had finally found willing partners. Today, the nation’s Mormon population is relatively small: there are 5.5 million in the United States, compared to 66 million Roman Catholics. But their ranks are tight — a distinct advantage when operating in a fractious and factionalized society. In 1972, George McGovern and his liberal backers used similar cohesion to gain brief control of the Democratic Party. The conservative takeover of the GOP is a bigger success story; today, the former right-wing insurgents have become the right-wing establishment. Now the voraciously ambitious Mitt Romney wants a place at the table, if not the lead chair. And Mormon solidarity — next to which standard conservative esprit de corps pales in comparison — may help him get it.

Welcome to The Black Mormon Homepage
What is a "Black Mormon"? "Black Mormons" are Mormons of black African lineage of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ; commonly known as The Mormon Church (also called "The LDS Church" or The Mormon Faith ). There have been Black Mormons since 1832; two years after the official founding of the Church in New York State in 1830. One of the first Seventies of the LDS Church was a Black Mormon by the name of Elijah Abel (1810-1884). Because of his great faith, he was ordained to the Priesthood and became a member of the Third Quorum of Seventy; a priesthood-office just under Apostle. He was a personal friend to the Prophet Joseph Smith, and helped to rescue him from mobs in Missouri bent upon taking his life. Elijah Abel's son Enoch and grandson Elijah were also ordained to various offices in the Priesthood. Elijah Abel died in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 74; just after having served a mission for the Church in Canada and Cincinnati, Ohio. A special stone memorial was erected over the grave of Elijah Abel in 2003:

PROBLEMS WITH THE BOOK OF MORMON?
    ...A LIST OF POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
    http://www.geocities.com/Athens/8020/whtprobs.html
written by Melissa Birkholz, May 1998 (Updated Oct. 15, 1998)
    e-mail: myriad@geocities.com
There is a document on the Web, written by Beaufort C. Addison III (Br. Clif), claiming he found problems with the Book of Mormon. Br. Clif, who states he is a returned missionary, encourages others to copy and distribute his web page. Thus, there may be hundreds, possibly thousands, who have read his claims. Unfortunately, there are people who will read his document and take it at face value. This is especially true for people who are already anti-Mormon, eagerly looking for new fuel for their fires. They probably won’t bother to investigate his claims. However, I took the time to investigate Br. Clif’s charges. I found solutions to his problems, which I have posted on this web page. [...Thank you, Br. Clif, for strengthening my testimony of the Book of Mormon...] I found many of his problems came from not following the events of the Book of Mormon and from taking things out of context. One was falsehood. Anyone who uses Br. Clif’s claims as fact will be spreading false witness (Ex. 20:16; Prov. 6:16-19; 19:5; Rev. 21:8). Don’t do it Please read this page first. ...Compare and contrast. In fact, don’t take anyone’s word for it Objectively study, investigate and research the Book of Mormon for yourself. I invited Br. Clif to link his page problem by problem to each of my solutions. He received my invitation on June 23, 1998 and replied promptly. Currently, he is working on a project about Paul of the New Testament and does not have a working Internet connection. He did write, quote: “...you can state my intention to link to your solutions as soon as I get a working internet connection...”

Based on my experiences, over a several year period, in discussing the Mormon church electronically with non Mormons in a forum similar to alt.religion.mormon, I have written a book about the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The book answers many of the questions posed by anti Mormons. The book on Mormonism can be viewed in two ways.

    178. Heterosexualization Of Gay Men And Lesbians In The LDS Church By Jeff Jensen
Essay by Jeff Jensen looks at how mormons treat homosexuals.
    http://www.lds-mormon.com/wswwb.shtml
We See What We Believe: The Heterosexualization of Gay Men and Lesbians in the LDS Church
    Jeffery R. Jensen, M.D.

as presented at D.C. Sunstone 1997 It is tempting for Americans who value liberty, democracy and free speech to regard the actions of those Soviet psychiatrists as barbaric. But, by all accounts, most of the psychiatrists who participated in the treatment of dissidents honestly believed (and may still believe) in the singular correctness of the Soviet social and political ideology. From their point of view deviance from the social norm is unthinkable for the sound mind, so dissident beliefs must reflect mental illness. But, as previously noted, intemperance toward gay men and lesbians did not originate with psychoanalysts; they simply codified the prejudice that already existed in nineteenth century, Western European, Judeo-Christian society into sets of psychological formulations. They used and abused the unique public trust granted to the profession to attempt to enforce in their patients, through psychotherapy, social norms and prejudice. The fact that the actual lives of lesbians and gay men differed substantially from psychoanalysts’ and society’s beliefs about gay men and lesbians had little impact on the persistent propagation of the mythology of “the homosexual.” The dogged persistence of erroneous observations in the face of overwhelming contradictory evidence led Judith Lorber (1995) to state: “We see what we believe” (p. 42). I borrowed Lorber’s phrase, “we see what we believe,” for the title of this paper because an examination of the perspective on homosexuality supported and proffered by LDS church leaders and LDS Social Services demonstrates that “official” beliefs regarding the immoral condition of homosexuals precedes and informs their treatment/mistreatment by ecclesiastical leaders as well as “believing” mental health professionals. LDS church leaders tell LDS mental health professionals what to

    179. Latter-day Saints / Mormons In Mystery Novels
Bibliography of mystery novels with mormon characters.
    http://www.adherents.com/lit/mys_lds.html
    Mormon Mysteries:
Mainstream Mystery Novels Featuring Latter-day Saints (Mormons)
Many thanks to Michael Austin of Shepherd College, West Virgina for assistance in filling in some blanks and adding to this list. For more complete information about Mormon Mysteries, readers should use Austin's Mormons In Popular Literature Bibliography: 1979-2000 web page, and his extensive annotated bibliography of 38 detective novels which accompanies "Troped by the Mormons: The Persistence of 19th Century Mormon Stereotypes in Contemporary Detective Fiction." Sunstone 21:3 (August 1998): 51-71.
While the Latter-day Saint culture has generally been described positively (or at least neutrally) in science fiction and fantasy literature, it has typically been treated more harshly in the mystery genre. Given the nature of mystery novels, this should not be surprising, because the genre is focused on the dark side of every culture and character. Mysteries are usually about solving murders. Mysteries set in New York drag their detectives through the moral underside of the Big Apple (real or imagined). They don't stop off for lengthy descriptions of "The Lion King" on Broadway or children's art exhibits in Central Park. Likewise, mainstream mysteries set in Utah (but written by non-Latter-day Saint writers for a national, non-Latter-day Saint market) typically portray their setting and resident culture negatively. The novels on this list feature Latter-day Saints (Mormons) as the protagonist (the detective), as the antagonist (or possible suspects), or as both.
