Social and Political Reactions to Mormon Polygamy
Written by: Unregistered "We are a peculiar people," Elder Bruce R. McConkie once said (McConkie 25). The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is one of a few "odd" Christian religions. Many of its practices have created much persecution and political reaction, polygamy being one of these. It created much social and political persecution of the Mormons. Most of this persecution had come from anti-polygamist Christians. This is ironic because the anti-polygamists believed in the Bible, but not polygamy, one of its teachings. Many of God’s righteous followers in the Old Testament practiced polygamy. Abraham married Hagar, Sarai’s handmaiden (Genesis 16:1-3). Jacob was married to Leah, Rachel, Billah, and Zilpha all at the same time. In the Doctrine and Covenants, a book of modern revelation used as scripture by the LDS church, it states that "in nothing did they [the Old Testament prophets] sin save in those things they received not of me [God]"(132:38). Quickly one sees that God gave those women to the prophets of old because they were righteous.

Welcome to my Mormon site. For four years I discussed the Gospel online with non-LDS. I've put my responses to them into a free online book in which I give my understanding of the basic teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and answer many criticisms of the Mormon Church. In addition, I recently completed several days of intense (time wise) electronic discussions with critics of the Church. Also, I've received negative emails and forum comments about the Church. I've posted my replies to these criticisms in a Gospel Defense page to serve as an educational resource for Latter-day Saints who answer questions about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I've written a number of essays on topics that relate to Mormonism. In addition to my writings, this site has quite a few pages of inspirational and fun things that I hope you'll enjoy. Thanks for stopping by! Even though this site concerns Mormonism, I speak for myself as an active Latter-day Saint, and I do not represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the LDS people. Olympics put spotlight
    on Mormon world
By ROBIN CAUDELL Staff Writer PLATTSBURGH — The 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City is a balm to a bruised American spirit. For The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, these Olympics present an opportunity to dispel lingering myths about Mormons. "The state and church ... view the Olympics as a chance to see Mormons for more than what people picture them in their minds as polygamists with weird alcohol laws," said Bishop Michael Jensen of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Plattsburgh. Jensen was born in Idaho and attended college in Utah. "When I moved out here to New York, people wondered how many wives I had. The church doesn’t practice polygamy and hasn’t since the 1800s." Jensen lives in Peru with his wife, Kandy, and their five sons — 12-year-old Christopher; 11-year-old Adam; 9-year-old David; 4-year-old Matthew; and 1-year-old Aaron. The story of the faith, in which he was raised, begins with Joseph Smith, who grew up in Vermont and New York.

    http://www.americanreligion.org/cultwtch/polygamy.html
    FUNDAMENTALIST OR POLYGAMY-PRACTICING
    MORMON GROUPS
In 1822 the United States government passed the Edmunds Law outlawing polygamy. Eight years later the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints withdrew its support of polygamy and threatened excommunication to any who practiced it. In spite of the Church's stance, some Mormons continued in the practice. Many polygamists moved to Mexico because of the relative liberality of Mexican law. Polygamy experienced a revival in the 1930s following the publication of the claims of Lorin C. Woolley. Woolley claimed that on the evening of September 27, 1886, John Taylor, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, while staying at the Woolley home in Centerville, Utah, received a spirit visitation from Joseph Smith, Jr., the Church's founder. Smith's revelation concerned the continuance of plural marriage, and Taylor extracted a promise from all present that they would defend, sustain, and uphold the principle. The group covenanted together that no year would pass without children being born according to "the principle." Later, according to Woolley, Taylor conferred the priesthood on five men, including Woolley and his father. At the time of the publication of the claim, all the men involved in the story except Lorin Woolley were dead. Only when he was the only one left, did Woolley assert any prerogatives based on Taylor's actions. He gathered followers and appointed a seven-member council to which he passed authority to govern the Church. Woolley died in 1934 and was succeeded by J. Leslie Broadbent. Broadbent lived only a short time before he was succeeded by John Y. Barlow.

Edited by Newell G. Bringhurst and Darron T. Smith
Taking stock of Mormon progress on the developing role of blacks The year 2003 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the lifting of the ban excluding black members from the priesthood of the Mormon church. The articles collected in Newell G. Bringhurst and Darron T. Smith's Black and Mormon look at the mechanisms used to keep blacks from full participation, the motives behind the ban, and the kind of changes that haveand have nottaken place within the church since the revelation responsible for its end. This challenging collection is required reading for anyone concerned with the history of racism, discrimination, and the Latter-day Saints. Newell G. Bringhurst teaches history and political science at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California, and is the author of Saints, Slaves, and Blacks: The Changing Place of Black People within Mormonism and other books. The Inconsistent of the Mormon's Doctrine of Polygamy
By David R. Kenney The book of Exodus contains an important event in the life of Moses. In Exodus 4:24-26 we see an example of the importance of keeping a covenant with God and the peril of neglect. Circumcision of a male was the symbol of God's covenant with the descendants of Abraham. All male children were to be circumcised on the eighth day (Gen. 17:9-14). Moses was approached by God to go to Egypt to lead the Israelites out of bondage. God sent Moses' brother Aaron with him since Moses complained he was a poor speaker (Ex. 4:10, 14). Before Moses left to go to Egypt, his wife Zipporah bore him a son named Eliezer. Zipporah was a Midianite, thus not concerned with the covenant made with Abraham's descendants. Moses did not insist on the child's circumcision and neglected to keep the covenant. As great a man as Moses was, God would have killed him for neglecting to keep the covenant. This short passage teaches us lessons about the importance of doing what we should, not procrastinating, and choosing a faithful companion who has respect for the law of God. One of the distinguishing doctrines of Mormonism is polygamy. Polygamy is defined as having more than one husband or wife at one time. Polygamy originated not with God, but with a man named Lamech (Gen. 4:19).

In support of the Sesquicentennial Mormon Trail Wagon Trek, the Utah Education Network (UEN) was designated the official, educational web site for the Mormon Trail Re-enactment. As such, UEN, in partnership with the Utah State Office of Education, BYU Public School Partnership, Heritage Gateways Ltd., and the Mormon Trail Wagon Train - 150 Years, Inc. has created an educational, interactive online project site for students, teachers and families that followed the trek as it unfolded and continues to provide a database of historical data. The Heritage Gateways site features historical diaries, excerpts from published books such as I Walked to Zion, articles, commentaries, maps and video clips all reflecting the life and times of those early pioneers. The site is also a rich source for scholarly writings, links to other Internet resources, and a comprehensive bibliography of related writings, maps and organizations all related to the study of the pioneers, as well as instructions on how to build an authentic handcart. For the teacher in the classroom, this online project has high quality lesson plans and activities appropriate for elementary, middle school and high school students plus a special section featuring original student art work depicting life as a pioneer. Young people might especially enjoy reading stories of the children who experienced the trek first-hand 150 years ago in the Trail Pioneers section.
