61. Embraced By The Light
Examines the mormon and new age influence on Betty Eadie's presentation of her alleged NDE.
http://www.equip.org/free/DE010.htm
STATEMENT DE010 Embraced by the Light by Betty Eadie (Gold Leaf Press, 1992) The book Embraced By The Light (Gold Leaf Press) chronicles the near-death experience (NDE) of ex-hypnotherapist Beatty Eadie. The story opens in a Seattle-area hospital on November 19, 1973 when Eadie is 31-years-old. There, after undergoing a routine hysterectomy, she allegedly started hemorrhaging, subsequently died, and didn’t come back to life until almost five hours later. Although written by a first time author and published by a tiny publishing house in Placerville, California, the book has met with phenomenal success. Within six months of its December 1992 first printing of 20,000 copies, Embraced by the Light hit the New York Times bestseller list where it had spent 40 weeks as of February 3, 1994. Unfortunately, Embraced by the Light is extremely unbiblical. Eadie is a Mormon and her book reflects numerous doctrines distinctive of Mormonism. Her story also promotes beliefs similar to those found in the New Age movement and in the Mind Science religions (e.g., Christian Science, Religious Science). Mormon Influences According to an article in the March 6, 1993 Ogden, Utah Standard-Examiner, “Eadie said she was an inactive member of the LDS [Mormon] Church at the time [of her supposed near-death experience] and since then has become active. She said she was told during her after-life experience that the LDS Church is ‘the truest Church on the earth.’ But her LDS background wasn’t included in the book, she said, because ‘the book was meant to go out to the world, not just to LDS members.’”

This set of documents is my attempt to provide " Mormon Answers " to the questions that I receive about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the so-called "Mormon Church") and about The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Christ . These answers represent Jeff Lindsay's views and interpretations of Mormon scripture, Mormon history, and religious thought. My comments and answers have not been approved by the Church or its leaders. Latter-day Saint doctrine is not defined by my writings or by the writings of any private individual, especially a lone Mormon writer from Wisconsin (yours truly). It is not defined by stray, alleged quotes of past leaders. Even the "official" LDS Web Site is not necessarily a definitive, canonized source of "Mormon doctrine" (but it does have outstanding resources about many things of interest to Mormons and those interested in Mormons and Mormon beliefs). Official LDS doctrine, that which members are expected to accept, is defined by the scriptures (the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and a few other items in the LDS canon) and by official, ratified pronouncements of the First Presidency of the Church. If my views disagree with those standards, I am clearly wrong.

The Complete Story of Mormonism You're Entitled to Know.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has over 60,000 full-time missionaries throughout the world at any given time. These nice, young, clean-cut men are serving a two-year stint of proselytizing; in bringing the Mormon gospel to prospective members for their church.
These missionaries have an interesting story to tell. However, it is not the complete story. Many deeper doctrines are purposely omitted and are to be revealed only after the converts are baptized and become members.
The author feels quite differently about this sequence; that a person should know all the facts ahead of time and be able to make an "informed decision" about something this important. The ethics of this deceptive practice are explored here.
This book is devoted to disclosing the complete story of Mormonism the things the missionaries will not tell you and the reasons why.

Since 1967 , a growing staff of Baptist Mid-Missions missionaries has been serving the Lord in Utah. Hundreds of lives have been touched and souls saved. Several Independent Baptist Churches have been established and buildings built. Thousands of Gospel tracts and other literature have been distributed. Hundreds of people from churches and Bible colleges all across the country have come to Utah to help on a short-term basis. What Was the 1838 Mormon War?
This page provides historical background on the persecution of Mormons in Missouri, leading to the 1838 Extermination Order. The setting in Missouri, the activities of mobs and militias, and the Mormon effort at self-defense are outlined, along with background on the development of the infamous Danites. This page offers supplementary information to my page on The 1838 Mormon War and Tales of the "Danites" . That page should be consulted first for quick answers to major questions on the Danites and the 1838 conflict in Missouri. This is one page in the suite of Frequently Asked Questions About Latter-day Saint Beliefs . It is the personal work of Jeff Lindsay and does not necessarily reflect official LDS doctrine.

Background: The Danites Bibliography
An Overview of the Danites and the Church in Missouri
The Danites
The term "Danites" is typically used to refer to a short-lived, secretive band of Mormons organized by Sampson Avard in 1838. The Danites apparently were organized in June of 1838 to defend the Mormons from internal enemies who had stirred up much prejudice and even violence against the Saints. In June, several dissidents from the Church were given a letter signed by Avard (the first signer) and 83 others urging them to leave immediately, which they did. Other dissidents stayed on but apparently became more quiet. With the threat of internal dissidents largely removed, the Danites evolved by the fall of 1838 into a defensive group to protect the Saints from the external threat of mobsters.

This page is neither sponsored nor endorsed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 2004 Update: Exciting news! Even wonder what the probability is that a given chiasmus occurred by chance rather than being intentional? A significant new publication applies careful statistical reasoning to address this issue. The work is Boyd F. Edwards and W. Farrell Edwards, " Does Chiasmus Appear in the Book of Mormon by Chance? BYU Studies , Vol. 43, no. 2, pp. 103-130 (2004). The entire article and many supplementary materials - including software for you to explore the statistics of chiasmus yourself - are also available free online at http://byustudies.byu.edu/chiasmus/ . The authors find that examples of chiasmus in the Book of Abraham or the Doctrine and Covenants are likely to be due to chance, but several well-known examples of chiasmus in the Book of Mormon appear to be intentional with a high level of confidence. They also provide useful background information and other insights. Well worth reading! Another 2004 Update: The FARMS Multimedia Page provides video and sound recordings of John Welch's lecture, "Chiasmus in the Book of Mormon" - a masterful 54-minute lesson that could be a valuable resource for a class or any serious student of the Book of Mormon. The Bible vs. The Book of Mormon
A NEW VIDEO by Living Hope Ministries! The Book of Mormon claims to be "a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible." Both the Bible and the Book of Mormon delcare themselves to be ancient, historical, and reliable rules of faith...the Word of God. Is there any evidence to support these claims...one way or another? Is it even possible to test a rule of faith? More to the point, is there any basis for placing one's faith in the Bible or the Book of Mormon? It's an important question. It's an eternal question. This new video puts the Bible and the Book of Mormon to the test. History, archaeology, textual criticism, and other disciplines combine to shed light on what is true...and what is false. This investigative project that has spanned more than two years, half a dozen countries on several continents, and many, many expert witnesses.

It lists mainstream science fiction and fantasy novels, short stories and movies (speculative fiction) which contain references specifically to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and to Mormonism in general. This list is certainly not comprehensive, but it does list all Hugo-, Nebula-, and Locus-winning novels with Latter-day Saint characters or references. This list does not include every reference to Latter-day Saints within each novel. Each novel or story is listed only once, with a brief explanation or sample quote. Many works include more than one reference, and in some, Latter-day Saints are a central element. (Titles in bold are those with the most extensive Latter-day Saint references.) Once again, this is a literary research resource; this list is NOT a source of information about the Church of Jesus Christ, nor is it a "recommended reading list" (Parkin has such a list
