Welcome to Christ the King Moravian Church of Durham, North Carolina. We’re glad that you have taken the time to check us out! Christ the King is a growing community of adults, youth and children who have a clear and joyful purpose - fulfilling Jesus' vision for His people. We are people who are striving to love Christ, live out the Scriptures, discover and use our spiritual gifts and make disciples. We do all this in order to do our part to fulfill Jesus’ intention that His church would reach out to all people, teaching them all he taught, helping them understand what it means to follow Christ, to live for him and to serve those in need. This purpose underlies all we do here in our community and in the world. The church began with just a few people in the summer of 1989 and is now a group of well over 200. Singles, married couples, older adults, youth and children are all a part of the loving family here at Christ the King. CKMC's 2005 Watchword All of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

68. The Moravians
The moravian church traces its origins to followers of John Hus, the Bohemianmartyr who was burned at the stake in 1415, and dates its formal beginning
http://www.fmoran.com/morav.html
The Moravian Church
Although Zinzendorf himself and the early church leaders favored an ecumenical, interdenominational ministry, the church in America made many converts among the Pennsylvania Germans, who were mostly from the Rhineland. Meanwhile the Herrnhut community attracted additional members from various parts of Europe. Thus "Moravian" denotes a member of this religious group, and probably does not reflect geographic origin in Moravia.
The Wachovia Settlement in North Carolina
In the fall of 1752, Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg and an accompanying party of five men traveled by from Bethlehem PA to the east coast of North Carolina and then inland to select and purchase a tract of nearly 100,000 acres from Lord Granville. The first settlers arrived in November, 1753, a group of eleven single men selected to provide the necessary skills for establishing a new community. Four others accompanied them on the journey but returned to Pennsylvania soon after. The tract was named Wachau or Wachovia, for the ancestral home of the Zinzendorf family near the Wach River in Europe. Additional settlers arrived beginning in 1754 and 1755, including the first women. The first community established was Bethabara, initially a stockaded fort protecting the neighboring farms. Never much more than a farming community in the early days, it is now within the city limits of Winston-Salem, on the northwest side of the city center. Researchers will find records for two different graveyards in Bethabara, the Moravian one and a second one, often called Dobbs Parish, which was used for "outsiders."

Matthew 25:40 On April 30 th First Moravian sponsored an Operation Inasmuch here in Greensboro, NC. Operation Inasmuch is a one-day mission blitz that originated in Fayetteville, NC at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church. The idea for this project day has spread to Baptist, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian and Catholic churches in North Carolina and across the Southeastern United States. It was on a much smaller scale than many other churches have done, but I think it was a huge beginning for churches in this community. Operation Inasmuch is a day of projects designed to connect with people at their point of need. Continued Here Send Your Prayer Concerns to Pastor David

http://www.moravian.org/daily_texts/
Daily Texts have been living this ecumenical dream for more than 250 years. First published in 1731 in Saxony, this little book grew out of a spiritual renewal of the Moravian Church (Unitas Fratrum) that dates back to August 13, 1727. In those days, Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf handed out a Losung, or "watchword," for the next day to each member of the Moravian congregation at Herrnhut, Saxony (now Germany). Thereafter one or more persons in the congregation went daily to each of the thirty-two houses in Herrnhut to bring them the watchword for the day. Today the biblical texts for each day continue the tradition, being chosen in Herrnhut, Germany, and then sent around the world to those who prepare the different language editions. In this edition, hymns are chosen and prayers written by Moravian clergy and laypersons from the United States and Canada. Each month is prepared by a different person or couple so that the prayers reflect the great diversity of devotion in the Moravian Church. Membership of the worldwide Moravian Church is over 750,000 in 19 provinces. The

About John Amos Comenius
JOHN AMOS COMENIUS
(Jan Amos Komensky) was born in 1592 in Nivnice, Moravia, in the area that is now the Czech Republic. Known today as the "Father of Modern Education," he pioneered modern educational methods. A contemporary of Galileo, Descartes, Rembrandt, and Milton, Comenius contributed greatly to the Enlightenment. He was the first to use pictures in textbooks ( The Visible World In Pictures , 1658), and believed in what might be called a holistic concept of education. He taught that education began in the earliest days of childhood, and continued throughout life. He advocated the formal education of women, an idea which was unheard of in his day. His philosophy of Pansophism (meaning "all knowledge") attempted to incorporate theology, philosophy, and education into one. He believed that learning, spiritual, and emotional growth were all woven together. What Comenius referred to as the Via Lucis , or "way of light," was the pursuit of higher learning and spiritual enlightenment bound together. His educational thought was profoundly respected in Northern Europe. He was called upon to completely restructure the school system of Sweden, and there is some evidence he was asked to become the first President of Harvard, an honor he declined because of his leadership of the troubled Moravian Church. Comenius was a Bishop of the Unitas Fratrum , commonly known as the Moravian Church during its darkest days. He became its President during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) which decimated the ranks of the Unity. At the close of the war, Bohemia and Moravian were ceded to Rome in the Peace of Westphalia. The few surviving members of the Unity had to either become Catholic or leave their homeland. Comenius led a small band to exile in Poland. Others simply went underground, feigning loyalty to Rome. This time, known as the "Hidden Seed" period, continued until a small group resettled in Saxony on the estates of Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf, a Lutheran noble. There, the denomination was reorganized and entered a period of great missionary endeavor.
