Reference Center Library - Is Messianic Judaism a form of Judaism?
Is The Christian Movement Called "Messianic Judaism"
A Form Of Judaism?
by Gerald Sigal Is the Christian movement that goes by the name "Messianic Judaism" a form of Judaism? In essence, so-called "Messianic Jewish" groups claim that they represent a "completed form of Judaism" or "completed form of Jewishness" or "Biblical Judaism." In actuality, self-styled "Messianic Judaism" is a form of Christianity that mimics rabbinic Judaism. (The question of whether such groups are Christian cults is a Christian problem.)
Our goal here is to convey the understanding that Judaism and Christianity are two separate faith systems. A Christian who was born Jewish may call his belief by any name but it is still Christianity, not Judaism. There are radical differences between Judaism and Christianity. What makes Christianity Christian is its belief in "Jesus Christ: Son of God, God incarnate." What makes the Christian movement called "Messianic Judaism" Christian is its belief in "Jesus Christ: Son of God, God incarnate. What makes Judaism Jewish is Israel's covenantal relationship with God expressed through God's instructions to Moses on Mount Sinai, both Written and Oral.

Congregation Shema Yisrael has three main goals:
  • To proclaim the Good News about Messiah Yeshua, first to the Jewish people, and then to the Gentiles. As Messianic Jews we present the Good News in a way that demonstrates that being Jewish and believing in Messiah Yeshua are fully compatible. To encourage the growth of Messianic Synagogues, where Jewish and Gentile believers can grow together in the Messianic Faith in an Old/New Testament Jewish setting. To bring the knowledge of the Jewish roots of the Faith to the rest of the Believing Community.

Network News, "My Turn" > back to sws newsletter Experiencing Messianic Judaism
by Leigh Berger, University of South Florida I see stories in people. In every observation and exchange, I'm looking for the stories that make them who they are. If I can hear the stories that create you, sustain you, and shape you, then I can know you. I am trained in narrative ethnography, in participating in people's stories, in observing the way they tell about their experiences, and in creating a written account of what I've seen. I understand and embrace the idea that narrative allows us to better appreciate and comprehend those we share our world with. This is the framework that accompanies me on my life's travels, and it is the framework I took with me when I embarked upon an odyssey that would profoundly impact me: my two year ethnography of Dalet Shalom, a Messianic Jewish congregation. Messianic Jews identify themselves as Jewish, carrying out Jewish rituals and celebrations within the context of a belief in Jesus (Yeshua). Messianic Jews are not accepted by mainstream Jews because of their theological insistence that Yeshua is the Messiah; they have an ambiguous relationship with mainstream Christians because they view Christian worship as paganized. Simultaneously defining themselves as Jewish while believing in Yeshua places Messianic Jews in an undefined border-land, a site where their identity is continually challenged and negotiated. My interest in Messianic Judaism was sparked by a newspaper article claiming that the Messianic movement is a disguised missionary movement, meant to lure Jews into converting to belief in Jesus. I found this claim both intriguing and suspect. Part of me wondered if this religious movement could be an ingenious ruse. But another part of me felt that the article was not addressing the complexity of faith. Could followers sustain belief based purely on trickery? To answer these questions, I began an ethnographic study of Dalet Shalom, a local Messianic Jewish congregation. Two and a half years later, it was time to write my dissertation, and to use my training in narrative ethnography not only to illuminate the people of my ethnography, but myself as well.

Ohev Yisrael Messianic Jewish Congregation
About Ohev Yisrael
Ohev Yisrael is a Messianic Jewish congregation founded on Yeshua Ha Mashiach (Jesus the Messiah) who, according to the Hebrew Scriptures, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. We worship the GOD of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in a style reflective of first century synagogues where followers of Mashiach Yeshua from both Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds assembled in unity. Our worship and observance seek to fulfill Yeshua's words for true worshippers, blending together the Torah (the word of GOD) and Ruach Hakodesh (truth and spirit). We rely on the Holy Scriptures as our source of truth and on the Holy Spirit for power, gifts, and direction in our lives.
Vision
Provide a congregational home for Jewish believers in Yeshua and for believing Gentiles called to serve Messiah within the Messianic Jewish community.
What is Messianic Judaism?
Messianic Judaism focuses upon the Mashiach (Messiah) of Yisrael (Israel). The Mashiach is the central tenet of the Pentateuch (The first five books of Scripture). Torah contains at least 75 passages which mention or are related to the Messiah. The writings of the Prophets contains at least 243 passages on the Mashiach. The Messiah is clearly the central focus of Scripture. Therefore the Mashiach is at the center of the Messianic believer's life. Yeshua (Jesus) was himself a Jew, raised in a Jewish home, of the lineage of King David. All of the Apostles and His first followers were Jewish, and all of the writers of what is known as the New Testament were probably Jewish. According to

97. Fundamentals Of Messianic Judaism
We believe that Judaism is founded on the Tenach (the Torah, the Prophts, We believe that Messianic Jews should celebrate their heritage and traditions.
http://www.lawus.com/messianic/fundamentals.html
Messianic Judaism
Is it Jewish to believe in Jesus (Yeshua, his Hebrew name)? One answer to this and other complex questions is simply that all those who have accepted Yeshua as the Messiah, and have accepted G-d's provision of atonement through him, remain Jewish. There is no conflict here.
History has come to know him as Jesus of Nazareth, but his friends and close associates just called him Yeshua. He brought a message of life, a message of hope and joy. He injected peace and purpose, meaning and significance into life after life. He has transformed us also.
Some may ask, "Doesn't Yeshua deny or oppose Judaism?" Not according to his own statements, or according to the lives of his earliest followers, the apostles. They joyfully celebrated the holidays together and followed the Jewish traditions. They came to realize the fullness that Yeshua said he would pack into their rich traditions. Levi further reminds us that Yeshua did not come to abolish the law, but rather to fulfill it. "But isn't this exclusively for Jewish people?," some Gentiles may ask. Absolutely not! All who respond to the Messiah, Jew and Gentile alike, are heirs to a rich Jewish heritage and have deep Jewish roots. Together, they share the dynamic vibrant life that he gives.
Yeshua was a Jew living in a Jewish land among Jewish people. All the apostles were Jewish as were the writers of the Newer Testament. For many years, faith in Yeshua was strictly a Jewish one. The book of Acts and other historical data tell us that during the first century there were hundreds of thousands of Messianic Jews. Moreover, there were Messianic Synagogues scattered throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. During this time, G-d miraculously showed his people that the Messiah was for both the Jew and the Gentile alike. Today, we are seeking to put the Messiah back into his biblical and Jewish context, and to share its beauty with others.

98. THE MESSIANIC JEWISH SIMCHA
If messianic judaism does not have its own conversion process, then that means (Of course, messianic judaism does not recognize being Jewish or Jewish
http://messianicbureau.org/synagogue/conversion.htm
THE MESSIANIC JEWISH SIMCHA
The Jewish Conversion Process (Approved in principle by the 2nd Annual MBI Conference March 3, 2001) The Jewish Simcha is another way of referring to “Gentile conversion to Judaism”. Simcha originally means celebration.
The Messianic Jewish Simcha (conversion) is a controversial subject among Messianic Jews. This is because we are careful not to do anything to confuse or conflict with the simcha/celebration we have obtained in knowing Messiah Yeshua our L_RD. Knowing Him is the highest and best form of Judaism in our estimation.
Messianic Believers Want Conversion
However, we must recognize that many non-Jewish believers, who have come out of the Gentile world into the commonwealth of Israel through Messiah, feel and live much more as a Jew than a Gentile or even a Christian. They are surely no longer Gentiles in lifestyle or adherance. When Messianics do not have a way of obtaining Simcha, it sometimes results in a strong urge to adhere to Israel through a less than authentic means: either trying to get an orthodox conversion or accepting the Ephraimite doctrine as their claim to Israel.
All Messianics, whether from Jewish heritage or not, are unified as one new creation of G-d through their faith in Messiah Yeshua. This takes care of the spiritual connection, but there remains the need for many Messianic non-Jews to obtain people-hood in the earth. People-hood provides culture, which comes from a shared heritage, history, trouble and glory. Many non-Jewish Messianics feel closer to the Jewish culture than say their Irish, African, Hispanic, etc. roots. That should not be a surprise, since the Messianic Jewish restoration naturally promotes that sensibility. It does this by connecting the Ancient G-d of the Jews with His prophetic and revelatory work happening today.
