  • Should Christians celebrate Passover or any of the other Jewish holidays? Should I really try to persuade my Jewish neighbor to believe in Yeshua (Jesus)? online catalog Back to top Why do Jews, especially non-religious ones, reject Yeshua? It is a common misconception that Jewish people are experts on the Old Testament, and that after much study they have decided that Yeshua is not the Messiah. The truth is that most Jewish people know less about the Old Testament than the average Christian. They reject Yeshua because of the way in which he has been portrayed by the Church down through the centuries. There has been so much persecution of Jews by so-called Christians (e.g., the Crusades, Inquisition, Holocaust, and modern-day white supremacist groups) that the Jewish community has rejected Yeshua without even knowing what he taught. Messianic Judaism
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Messianic Judaism is any of a group of loosely related religious movements, all claiming a connection with Judaism . Their history can be linked back to such groups as the Ebionites . Beliefs and practice range from evangelical Christianity to close to Orthodox Judaism , while accepting Jesus to be the Messiah (and God) and using the New Testament as scripture . The groups range from those comprised mostly of Jews to those which are mostly gentile in membership; the majority are mixed. Perhaps the best known of the Messianic groups, although certainly not the largest, is the controversial Jews for Jesus . Its stated aims are to educate Evangelical Christians concerning the Jewish origins of their Christian faith, and to convert Jews to Christianity. However, other Messianic organizations do not approve some of their methods of doing so. Most Jewish converts to Christianity do not consider themselves "Messianic Jews". Many Protestant and Catholic churches have Jewish converts among their members, but these members self-identify as Christians. They also sometimes are referred to as

I disagree, there are clearly jewish groups from the time of the maccabees down to the destruction of the second temple that believed that their leader was the messiah. Said leader was certainly not Jesus in most cases, but such groups are properly described as a form of messianic judaism. J.F.Quackenbush
You are right. Ignore RK here, who is not qualified to comment on any issue of religion. Please do not misunderstand I totally agree with you. You are saying that these Jewish groups had messianic beliefs, so you point out that one may describe these groups as "messianic Judaism". Perhaps so, but I was referring to the fact that in common useage the phrase "messianic Judasm" has a specific meaning: It refers to 20th century groups, that's all. RK
This is the reason that I made the distinction between usage towards matters of antiquity and usage in modern English. I agree with you, most people who say "messianic Judaism" nowadays really mean to say "Christianity". This does not, however, alter the fact that the term has a secondary, and possibly older usage that is not sourced in evangelism.

A History of the 20th Century Movement in America of "Jewish Believers" in "Yeshua Ha Mashiach" (Jesus Christ)
    by William Greene, Ph.D.
The modern phenomenon of Jewish believers in Jesus Christ as their Messiah has a long history in the United States, and (as is the case with most modern Jewish history) has strong ties to a European heritage as well. Foundations for the twentieth century were laid, of course, in the nineteenth century and before; worldwide, estimates of Jewish conversions to Christianity approximated 250,000 during the 1800s, including such notables as British Prime Minister Disraeli, Old Testament commentary wri ters Franz Delitzsch and David Baron, and the first Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem, Michael Solomon Alexander. However, in America, this phenomenon has taken on some unique characteristics, the most prominent of which has been the evolution of what was known as " Hebrew Christianity "

    The Rise of "Messianic Judaism"
by Peter Hocken The rise of Messianic Judaism in the late 1960's and early 1970's represents as much a new direction and a discontinuity with the "Hebrew Christian" movement as it represents a continuity. The change of title, expressed in the re-naming of the Hebrew Christian Alliance of America as the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America What happened to win over the Jewish believers in Jesus to the Messianic Jewish vision they had earlier been so loath to embrace? The following factors all seem to have played a definite role: (1) the impact of the Six-Day War of 1967; (2) the charismatic movement; (3) the Jesus movement and the student upheavals of 1968. the Israeli victory in the Six-Day War gave a new self-confidence to some Hebrew Christians with a sense of the importance of biblical prophecies concerning Israel. The Jesus movement that was outside the denominations saw many young Jews come to faith in Jesus, and this produced a notable influx of new young believers into the Young Hebrew Christian Alliance. Many future leaders in the Messianic Jewish movement came from this crop of new young believers. Developments within the Messianic Jewish movement in the USA As mentioned, the change from Hebrew Christian terminology to that of Messianic Judaism arose from an influx of mostly young new Jewish believers in Jesus and an impulse to form Messianic synagogues. Much of this new thrust was charismatic. The tensions inherent in the movement, especially concerning the degree of Jewish practice to embody, were augmented by the Evangelical-Charismatic tussle.

I asked a former member of such a group to explain to me what these terms meant. His reply- they are synonyms! We are talking about Jews who have converted to Christianity. However they will tell you that they are still Jewish and that it is possible for a Jew to be both Jewish and a believer in Jesus/Yeshua. The groups listed are for the most part Christian supported and staffed. They usually have as their leaders ordained ministers. Their common goal is to bring the Jewish people to accept Jesus as the promised Jewish Messiah and the savior of the world. That he died for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day. All who believe in him, Jew or Gentile will be saved. The Jewish community has categorized Tequniques that they use to accomplish the mission of bringing Jews to accept Jesus/Yeshua, as being deceptive and offensive.

    Messianic Judaism versus Rabbinic Judaism
    by Carol Calise
There are several foundational issues that define the difference between Messianic Judaism and Rabbinic Judaism. These issues have nothing to do with the structures of our services or our observance of holidays, Jewish customs, etc. But it is these foundational differences that affect each of our understanding and acceptance or non-acceptance of Yeshua as Messiah. 1. Rabbinic Judaism believes Oral law/tradition is authority. Scriptures of the Oral Torah , states “the Oral Torah, Torah she-be-al peh, Torah that is memorized is that half of the one whole Torah revealed by God to Moses at Mt. Sinai that came down from then to late antiquity, formulated and transmitted in memory alone. The Oral Torah serves to complement and complete the written one and vice versa.” (1-2) So, how does this work. God gave Moses a command, i.e., Honor your Father and Mother, then God explained in detail what that meant. This explanation was memorized by Moses and transmitted to Joshua who transmitted it to the elders, etc. The next piece of Rabbinic literature is called the Tosefta. It means addition or supplement. It is a supplement to the Mishnah and follows its same general order. It was compiled sometime between 200 CE - 400 CE.

M essianic J udaism / is a biblically based movement of Jewish people who believe in Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah. In so believing they have chosen to worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob according to the Biblical customs and traditions of the Jewish nation. To some the concept of being Jewish and believing in Yeshua is an oxymoron. Jewish and Jesus they believe are mutually exclusive. However when we consider who a Jewish person is According to Scripture, the concept of remaining Jewish and believing in Yeshua are neither an oxymoron, nor are they mutually exclusive. The name Jew was derived from the forth tribe of Israel, "Judah," meaning in Hebrew "Praiser of G-d." So firstly a Jew is a Praiser of G-d. Most people are under the misconception that being Jewish refers to being a member of a religious institution or that it is a birthright. Jews today associate themselves with the Jewish religion, just like Catholics associate themselves with the Catholic religion. But this is not what G-d intended a "Jew" to be. Allow me first to start by explaining how the Jewish religion evolved. It all started with Ezra. Upon his return to Jerusalem from exile in Babylon, Ezra understood Israel's plight was because of their disobedience to Torah (the five books of Moses).
