THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is commonly known as the Mormon Church or the LDS Church. Members of the church were the first permanent non-Native American settlers in the Territory of Utah, and they still comprise approximately 70 percent of Utah's population.
Organization, Teachings, and Practices
Latter-day Saints believe that their church is the authentic restoration of the church established by Jesus Christ in New Testament times. Its authority to perform saving ordinances and do other things in God's name comes from the priesthood, which was restored to Joseph Smith through heavenly messengers and is passed on to all worthy male members through ordination. At the head of the church stands the president of the church, who is considered God's living prophet. He and his two counselors constitute a quorum known as the First Presidency. Next to them stand the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and they are assisted in administering the Church worldwide by two Quorums of the Seventy. A Presiding Bishopric, consisting of three men, administers the temporal affairs of the Church.
All these leaders are known collectively as the General Authorities of the church. Other general church officers include the presidency of the Relief Society (a women's organization founded by Joseph Smith), the presidency of the young women's association, the presidency of the young men's association, the presidency of the Sunday School, and the presidency of the Primary (a churchwide organization for children).

Onward, Mormon soldiers
How the Latter-day Saints could make Mitt Romney president
BY ADAM REILLY
If there’s a moment that marks the beginning of the LDS ascendancy, it came in 1979, when right-wing Christian fundamentalist Jerry Falwell announced the formation of the Moral Majority, the anti-choice, anti-woman, anti-gay, pro-school-prayer group that reshaped American politics. In Falwell’s coalition, individual Mormons joined forces with Christian fundamentalists and conservative Catholics in an attempt to make American politics more godly. The oft-isolated LDS Church had finally found willing partners. Today, the nation’s Mormon population is relatively small: there are 5.5 million in the United States, compared to 66 million Roman Catholics. But their ranks are tight — a distinct advantage when operating in a fractious and factionalized society. In 1972, George McGovern and his liberal backers used similar cohesion to gain brief control of the Democratic Party. The conservative takeover of the GOP is a bigger success story; today, the former right-wing insurgents have become the right-wing establishment. Now the voraciously ambitious Mitt Romney wants a place at the table, if not the lead chair. And Mormon solidarity — next to which standard conservative esprit de corps pales in comparison — may help him get it.

We believe in the fullness of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed through the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., and as commanded to be taught and practiced anew by the Lord in this very day through direct revelation, saying: " Thus saith the Lord." "Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant , we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah." (Is 1:9) We have been called forward as the remnant spoken of so frequently in the scriptures, to establish Zion upon the earth, empowered with the authority and divine directive to do so. This prophesied event is transpiring in the face of the LDS Church's failure to keep their covenants and abide by God's laws. This is the fulfillment of the works of Joseph Smith, Jr. who still reigns as the head of the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times, whose work is to prepare this earth for the return of Jesus Christ, our King. Weekly Quote: "There is nothing short of complete apostasy, a complete denial of every principle we have received, a throwing away of the Holy Priesthood, that can save us from persecution. When this takes place, when all the chief features of the Gospel are obliterated, when we can float along the stream and do as the world does, then and not till then will persecution cease, or until the adversary is bound."

    160. LDSS Latter-day Saint Seminar Mailing List

A Mailing List for Latter-day Saints
LDS Seminar [LDSS] is an email list intended to be a resource for Gospel Doctrine teachers and all Sunday School teachers. As such it's focus will be primarily on the set of Scriptures that are currently being addressed in the course of study.
I envision LDS Seminar as an intelligent conversation on the Scriptures between friends who care more about what is right than who is right. I hope it will be a scholarly conversation, without being pretentious, obscure or obtuse. The main thrust of LDSS is the writing of columns by list members for the perusal of subscribers. These columns are combined and archived, and are intended primarily to assist Gospel Doctrine teachers in specific and Sunday School teachers in general in lesson preparation.
There are two modes of distributing LDSS, based upon list topic and volume. If you choose to subscribe, please choose one of the two. All lists receive the same LDSS lesson material. The difference between the lists is in whether the subscribers are permitted to post. Choose the list that best suits the volume you want to receive.
LDS Seminar [LDSS] is an unmoderated list where subscribers may post at will. The list charter requires conversation to be respectful and on topic. Suitable topics are the Gospel Doctrine lessons, questions associated with the Scriptures pertinent to the current year's Gospel Doctrine lessons, teaching helps, and questions that come up during a Gospel Doctrine/Sunday School class. Off topic material (e.g., humor, general questions, policy speculation, sports, politics, etc.) is actively discouraged. This list is generally
