125. How Do Latter-day Saints Believe They Should Live Their Lives?

How do Latter-day Saints believe they should live their lives?
by FARMS "We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men." Joseph Smith wrote this in 1842 in response to a journalist's inquiry concerning the beliefs of Latter-day Saints. "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things" ( Articles of Faith 1:13). Latter-day Saints do not claim that they are all virtuous, without exception, nor that others do not display great virtue. Latter-day Saints do, however, feel strongly that their religious beliefs must be translated into daily living, and so they "seek after" those qualities of goodness. An Obligation and Covenant People enter the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through baptism and take upon themselves a sacred covenant to love God with all their heart, might, mind, and strength and "serve him and keep his commandments" (Mosiah 18:10). They accept the obligation to try not only to keep the Lord's commandments, but also to become more like him-with hearts and lives more filled with purity, kindness, compassion, and mercy. Under this baptismal covenant, Latter-day Saints promise to show love for Christ by being "willing to bear one another's burdens, that they may be light," "to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort" (Mosiah 18:8-9). It is this kind of concern for others and compassionate service that characterizes true discipleship (see John 13:34-35).

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , major world religion of 12 million members, established in 1830 by Joseph Smith , known as the prophet. Followers of this religion are called Mormons. From a handful of members at the beginning, the movement has grown steadily through proselytizing and a relatively high birth rate. By the early 2000s there were 5.5 million Mormons in the United States and the number in other countries around the world totaled about 6.5 million. Before World War II conversions had been most numerous in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia, but during recent years the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has grown rapidly in developing countries. In Mexico, for example, there were 850,000 Mormons in 2000, most of them converted since 1975. In South Korea, the Latter-day Saints had no adherents before 1950, but by 2000 there were 71,000 members. A vigorous missionary program—a rotating force of about 60,000 preaching Mormon doctrine in more than 330 missions in the United States and abroad—assures a steady influx of new members.
