Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
I. Group Profile
  • Name: Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS)
  • Founder: Joseph Smith III, son of founder of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith Jr.
  • Date of Birth and Death:
  • Year Group was Founded:
  • How/Why:
Joseph Smith Jr. claimed to receive revelation from God instructing him how to restore to the earth the same church that Christ founded. Smith thus became founder, president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) . In June, 1844, Smith was murdered by a mob in Carthage, Illinois. In the ensuing turmoil, the majority of Mormons accepted Brigham Young as the next prophet of the church. A few, however, thought that Smith designated his 12 year-old son Joseph Smith III as his successor. This group did not follow the majority of Mormons to Utah, and in 1860, when Joseph Smith III had matured, this group founded the RLDS Church in Illinois with Smith as prophet. The church moved its headquarters to Independence, Missouri in 1920 due to a 19th-century Joseph Smith Jr. statement designating the city as Zion.

The Restoration in Images This site contains on the order of 1500 photographs of historical sites of biblical interest in Israel, as well as sites in America which are of historical importance to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. America ( The Kirtland Temple in Kirtland, Ohio) After the crucifixion of the Savior and the death of the apostles, the Gospel of Jesus Christ in it's entirety was lost from the earth. Gospel principles were debated and changed by men, and the Priesthood power held by ancient prophets and bestowed upon Peter, James and John by the Savior himself was lost. in 1830, the United States of America was the site of the restoration of the Gospel, the Lord's Priesthood power, and the establishment of His church as it existed in the meridian of time. Reverence to and Interest in these sites in Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri and elsewhere across the heartland of America as places where God has again communed with man are unique to members of his restored church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Israel ( The entrance to the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem) Three of the worlds great religions have deep roots in Israel : Judaism, Christianity and Muslimism. Photographs were captured of many important sites to these major religions. The Old Testament is held by tenants of the Savior's restored church as scripture, and an understanding of the culture and environment of the Old Testament Prophets lends deeper understanding to their teachings. As Christians, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints revere Jesus Christ as the Messiah and the New Testament as scripture. The historical and geographical context of His mission are of great interest and study.

Near this spot on 30 July 1837, the first British converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were baptised by immersion in the River Ribble. Elder Heber C. Kimball, one of the Twelve Apostles of the Church, baptised six men and three women: George D. Watt, first, and then Charles Miller, Thomas Walmsley, Ann Elizabeth Walmesley, Miles Hodgson, Henry Billsbury, Mary Ann Brown, Ann Dawson, and George Wate. The Prophet Joseph Smith had sent Apostles Heber C. Kimball and Orson Hyde, with Willard Richards, Joseph Fielding, John Goodson, Isaac Russell, and John Snider from America to the British Isles. They arrived in Liverpool on 19 July 1837. They travelled first to Preston where the Rev. James Fielding, Elder Fielding's brother, permitted them to preach in the Independent chapel on Vauxhall Road. (The chapel has long since been demolished, but the present-day location is near to the entrance of Norwich Place off St. Austin's Road.)

    The Anchorage Alaska Temple
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
The second of the new small temples, Anchorage incorporates several new features. For example, the Angel Moroni on the Monticello Temple is white, durring overcast days the statue seems to disappear because of its unobtrusive color. For the Anchorage Temple the Angel Moroni is gold as in all other temples. To give the temple an Alaskan feel the west wall includes several star stones set in the pattern of the Big Dipper. This constellation is important for two reasons. Since the Big Dipper points to the north star, and hence represents northern lands, it was used in the Alaskan state flag. Its pointing to the north star, which is the only fixed star in the sky, also symbolizes pointing the way to truth, and as such it is part of the symbolism on the exterior of the Salt Lake Temple. Also, stylized evergreen trees are seen on most of the doors, forget-me-nots, the Alaska State flower, decorate the Sealing Room, and the altars are decorated with Native American influenced designs. The temple was announced in October 1997.

The Lord inspired the Prophet Joseph Smith to restore truths to the Bible text that had become lost or changed since the original words were written. These restored truths clarified doctrine and improved scriptural understanding. The passages selected for the Guide should help improve your understanding of the scriptures regardless of the language into which they are translated. Because the Lord revealed to Joseph certain truths that the original authors had once recorded, the Joseph Smith Translation is unlike any other Bible translation in the world.
