This set of documents is my attempt to provide " Mormon Answers " to the questions that I receive about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the so-called "Mormon Church") and about The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Christ . These answers represent Jeff Lindsay's views and interpretations of Mormon scripture, Mormon history, and religious thought. My comments and answers have not been approved by the Church or its leaders. Latter-day Saint doctrine is not defined by my writings or by the writings of any private individual, especially a lone Mormon writer from Wisconsin (yours truly). It is not defined by stray, alleged quotes of past leaders. Even the "official" LDS Web Site is not necessarily a definitive, canonized source of "Mormon doctrine" (but it does have outstanding resources about many things of interest to Mormons and those interested in Mormons and Mormon beliefs). Official LDS doctrine, that which members are expected to accept, is defined by the scriptures (the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and a few other items in the LDS canon) and by official, ratified pronouncements of the First Presidency of the Church. If my views disagree with those standards, I am clearly wrong.

This page deals with the Bible and the LDS view of scripture (including the Book of Mormon), seeking to answer many common objections and questions. This is one of several pages in a suite on " Frequently Asked Questions about Latter-day Saint Beliefs ." This work is solely the responsibility of Jeff Lindsay, a "Mormon" in Appleton, Wisconsin.

    The Bible and LDS Scriptures
Latter-day Saints accept and revere the Bible as the word of God. We use both the Old Testament and the New Testament, and find tremendous value in both, for both testify of Christ, the Messiah, and teach us precious truths about God. Latter-day Saints learn Bible stories and scriptures from their childhood and throughout their lives. The Bible is used and studied in our Sunday School classes, our youth classes, our daily seminary program, college classes sponsored by the Church (Institute) and on Church campuses such as BYU. A passage from the Bible, James 1:5, was the catalyst that moved Joseph Smith to inquire of God which church he should join, leading to his remarkable First Vision that initiated the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith and all subsequent prophets have used the Bible heavily in their teachings. Joseph quoted from it more than any other scripture in his sermons and writings, and said the reader of the Bible could "see God's own handwriting in the sacred volume, and he who reads it oftenest will like it best" (

POLYGYNY IN THE MORMON MOVEMENT:
Polygyny during the 19th century

Terminology:
The media generally refer to plural marriages among Mormons as " polygamy ." However, the practice has always been limited to polygyny: the marriage of one man and two or more women. Polyandry has never been allowed. Thus, polygyny is the more precise term to use here.
Misunderstandings about Mormon polygyny:
There are a number of apparently mistaken beliefs concerning polygyny that are commonly held by contemporary members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , (a.k.a. the LDS or Mormon church): Many Mormons believe that Joseph Smith was married to only one wife, Emma. In fact, he married 33 or more women. Many Mormons believe that his second and subsequent wives were sealed to Joseph Smith after his death. In fact, he married them between 1833 and the year of his death, 1844. Many believe that his second and subsequent wives were elderly who were widows and needed protection. In fact, most of his plural wives were young. It is commonly believed that polygyny was necessary at the time because there was "

    39. LDS Depression: Learn To Deal With Your Depression
Learn about depressive illnesses, read hints on how to cope and give or receive support in a safe environment, provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of latterday saints.
    http://www.ldsdepression.com/
Suicidal? Please read this "Stop thinking that there is no way out of your depression. You CAN feel better again!" "Once in a while, as a therapist, I come across a personal work that is worthy of passing along to my fellow therapists and my clients. It is not very often that I have found something that would be both helpful to not only members of The Church of Jesus Christ and those who come from different religious backgrounds, but also to my colleagues. The story of this journey is such an effort. It is one that can help both therapist and client. It is helpful for us as therapists to know what is in the heart and mind of our clients. Sometimes hearing it does not register as well as the written word because sometimes our clients don't express out loud what they really feel for fear of hurting another or for fear of driving them away. I believe it helps other clients to know that they are not the only ones who struggle with feelings of despair and depression and to know they are not alone - that a light at the end of the tunnel really exists. It is my hope that as you read this story about one woman's journey that you will realize your own vulnerability and that it could be you at any given time. We are all subject to the ills of this word and "good" people struggle with their own "wilderness" experiences. No one is immune. But, isn't it wonderful that we have this opportunity to learn how to be there for one another from someone who has been willing to share the depths of her struggle with us? It is also my hope that you, the reader, will learn how to reach out to others if you should happen to fall into your own pit of despair during your lifetime. May the reading of this story offer a learning experience that helps you understand and be understood."
