Kadampa Buddhism
Kadampa Buddhism is mainstream Buddhism as preserved and practised by special Indian and Tibetan meditation masters. It derives its name from the ancient Kadampa Geshes of Tibet, who were renowned for the way they integrated meditation into their daily lives, setting an inspiring example of an ethical lifestyle dedicated to eradicating suffering from the world. More recently, the pure lineage of Kadampa Buddhism has been introduced to many other countries in Europe, America, and elsewhere by the renowned Tibetan Lama, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso , founder of the New Kadampa Tradition Gyaltsabje Centre is one of hundreds of meditation centres around the world established by Geshe Kelsang for the purpose of preserving and practising pure Kadampa Buddhism.

"Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible. If we first establish peace within our minds by training in spiritual paths, outer peace will come naturally, but if we do not, world peace will never be achieved, no matter how many people campaign for it."
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Few cities are as vibrant and exciting a place to live as New York City . But while many people enjoy material wealth and success, city life can often lead to an increase in stress and relationship difficulties. Meditation is a simple yet profound method to improve the quality of our lives. Through following very simple, practical instructions we can learn to let go of the causes of our pain and dissatisfaction and to gain the inner peace and clarity we seek. Meditation - The Buddhist Way to Happiness
Escape from the busyness of modern life by discovering the ancient art of Buddhist meditation. Create an inner space and tranquility free from the turbulence of modern living. Meditation helps you:
  • increase positive states of mind reduce stress and anxiety experience greater contentment and well-being improve concentration develop better relationships maintain greater physical health

The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful we shall be free from worries and mental discomfort, and we shall experience true happiness; but if our mind is not peaceful we shall find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions. If we train in meditation our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we shall experience a purer and purer form of happiness. Eventually, we shall be happy all of the time, even in the most difficult circumstances. -Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

About Kadampa Buddhism
Kadampa Buddhism is a Mahayana Buddhist school founded by the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha (AD 982-1054). His followers are known as 'Kadampas'. 'Ka' means 'word' and refers to Buddha's teachings, and 'dam' refers to Atisha's special Lamrim instructions known as 'the stages of the path to enlightenment'. The Kadampa tradition was later promoted widely in Tibet by Je Tsongkhapa and his followers, who were known as the 'New Kadampas'. Transforming daily activities into the path
By integrating their knowledge of all Buddha's teachings into their practice of Lamrim, and by integrating this into their everyday lives, Kadampa Buddhists are encouraged to use Buddha's teachings as practical methods for transforming daily activities into the path to enlightenment.

Next month (October) is a series called "Clear Sky Mind". Please click here for details on class titles and content. We have just updated our Timeline for 2005-2006, to reflect some wonderful events that are coming up in Florida this coming year!
On Saturday September 17 in Orlando, and on Saturday October 22 in Fort Myers, Kadam Lucy James will give a Special Day Course and Refuge Ceremony Shelter from the Storm. In Orlando, this will mark the opening of their wonderful new space. Please click here for details. For some, Refuge Day is an opportunity to receive profound blessings and a chance to begin exploring the richness of this very special spiritual tradition. For others, Refuge Day is a turning point in their lives where they embrace Buddha's teaching and start traveling the spiritual path as a Buddhist. Also, for those who have attended this day before, it is a chance to receive these blessings once again, and to renew their commitment to the path they have chosen. The day is divided into two parts. First, Kadam Lucy will give a teaching on Refuge, which will clearly explain what it means to take Refuge and its benefits. After a short break, the actual Refuge Ceremony will take place, and of course it will be up to you whether you use this to formally become a Buddhist, or simply as a powerful blessing. We can never have too many blessings!

Tilopa Centre is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) of Mahayana Buddhism. The Kadampa Tradition originates from Atisha, an Indian Buddhist master who was invited to teach in Tibet in the 10th century. Atisha specially arranged of all Buddha's teachings into a comprehensive collection that explains how to enter into, progress, and complete the Buddhist path to enlightenment. This arrangement became known as Lamrim in Tibetan or Stages of the Path to Enlightenment. Someone who practices Lamrim is a Kadampa.
As Spiritual Director of the NKT, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso encourages his students to be inspired by the Kadampa Geshes, the followers of Atisha, who were not only great scholars but also spiritual practitioners of great purity and sincerity. In the 14th century another great teacher, Je Tsongkhapa appeared in Tibet. He became famous for his clear teachings and profound writings. After this time, the tradition became known as the New Kadampa Tradition. All of Geshe Kelsang's books are commentaries to Je Tsongkhapa's teachings and maintain this unbroken lineage of teachings from Buddha Shakyamuni, through Atisha, to Je Tsongkhapa to the present day.
There are now 800 Buddhist centres and groups worldwide that are members of the New Kadampa Tradition. Tilopa Buddhist Centre takes its name from a great Indian Buddhist practitioner and one of our lineage Gurus. Tilopa appeared as a poor fisherman, and is often portrayed holding a fish in his hand; hence our logo, which also reminds us of one of the eight Buddhist auspicious symbols, the two fish. These two fish represent peace and harmony amongst Buddhist practitioners, just as two fish swim peacefully under water.
