God doesn't want me to write. But I have no choice. —Franz Kafka Despite all his denials and beautiful evasions, [Kafka] quite simply is Jewish writing. —Harold Bloom, The Western Canon Kafka and Judaism             Kafka was born a Jew and remained a Jew all his life, although he frequently tried to play down Judaism's influence on him.  "What do I have in common with the Jews?" he asked in his diary.  "I don't have anything in common with myself, and would be content to stand quietly alone in a corner, satisfied that I can breathe."  Nevertheless, his friends were almost all Jewish, as were all but a couple of his girlfriends.  Judaism plays a key though usually hidden role in many of his stories, such as in "Josephine the Singer, or the Mouse Folk," the "mouse folk" presumably being the Jews, who are depicted as widely scattered, hard-working, facing great dangers they always manage to overcome, and, interestingly, unartistic.             For centuries Jews had been living in the old ghetto in Prague, the Josefstadt, which had been one of the most important in Europe.  By the 19th century most German Jews had decided to assimilate themselves to the prevailing culture around them, hoping that in this way they would no longer be seen as "outsiders" and hence would gain rights traditionally denied to them.  They dropped the old clothes,  the "exotic" behaviors, and the use of Yiddish.  This proved successful in gaining them emancipation, which was completed in 1860, but along the way much of the centuries-old heritage and traditions were lost.   Eastern Jews, the

The department is home to a dozen regular faculty, with strengths especially in the fields of Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism; it enrolls about thirty graduate students and roughly half as many undergraduate majors. ORIGIN OF CHRISTIANITY and JUDAISM:
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED,
WHAT JESUS ACTUALLY TAUGHT and LATER CHANGES
by Manfred Davidmann
Summary
In ORIGIN OF CHRISTIANITY and JUDAISM, Manfred Davidmann proves what Jesus really taught: The social laws of the Torah have to be followed. These social laws guarantee equality, social justice and security, and a good life for all members of the community. These laws protect people from exploitation, oppression and enslavement through need. Early Christians, being mostly Jews, followed these laws. Manfred Davidmann then proves how these essential social laws of the Torah were bypassed and ceased to be observed, in Judaism and in Christianity at the same time. He describes and proves how Paul changed what Jesus had taught, how Paul's ideology serves the establishment instead of the people, and how this became Christianity's official doctrine. On the other hand Manfred Davidmann shows that the Talmud (especially the Mishnah) tells how Hillel changed Judaism in the same way, to what it is today. The Dead Sea Scrolls, within the context of the findings reported here, become much more meaningful. In turn, the knowledge gained from them is part of the pattern of events recorded here for the first time.

Department of Religion
More information on this lecture Religion is a major aspect of every human culture. In all civilizations in the world, religion shapes the institutions of law and government, influences family and parenting practices, and resonates in the creative work of writers and artists. A liberal arts education should include attention to human religiousness. Students well prepared in religious studies can better approach post-graduate work in law, medicine, public administration, or education. The Religion Department offers instruction, from the introductory to the advanced level, in most of the world's major religious traditions: Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, the religions of the ancient Near East, the religions of Africa, and religious life in Ancient and Modern China, and in North America. Almost all of the faculty specialize in a specific religious area and have expertise in the associated languages and history, since a philological and historical grounding is considered essential to a thorough understanding of a religion. Everyone teaching in the department also believes in the importance of comparing religious traditions and in studying religions in a comparative way. It is the department's insistence on an undergraduate major that is comparative and interdisciplinary in nature that distinguishes the study of religion at Dartmouth.

On the street corners, the lamps waited to be lit. Sometimes, however, the lamps were not as easily accessible... there were lamps in forsaken places. Someone had to light even those lamps so that they would fulfill their purpose and light up the paths of others. Many non-Jews (and even many assimilated Jews!) think of this holiday as the Jewish Christmas, adopting many of the Christmas customs, such as elaborate gift-giving and decoration. It is bitterly ironic that this holiday, which has its roots in a revolution against assimilation and the suppression of Jewish religion, has become the most assimilated, secular holiday on our calendar.
The Story of Chanukkah
The story of Chanukkah begins in the reign of Alexander the Great. Alexander conquered Syria, Egypt and Palestine, but allowed the lands under his control to continue observing their own religions and retain a certain degree of autonomy. Under this relatively benevolent rule, many Jews assimilated much of Hellenistic culture, adopting the language, the customs and the dress of the Greeks, in much the same way that Jews in America today blend into the secular American society. More than a century later, a successor of Alexander, Antiochus IV was in control of the region. He began to oppress the Jews severely, placing a Hellenistic priest in the
