In Standard Hebrew the Messiah is often referred to as Tiberian Hebrew ), literally "anointed king". Today, the various Jewish denominations have sharp disagreements about this subject, see below. (Note: The concept of the messiah in Judaism is briefly discussed in the Jewish eschatology entry. This article discusses the Jewish view of the messiah in more detail.)
Views of Maimonides
The predominant Jewish understanding of moshiach ("the messiah") is based on the writings of Maimonides , (the Rambam ). His views on the messiah are discussed in his Mishneh Torah , his 14 volume compendium of Jewish law , in the section Hilkhot Melakhim Umilchamoteihem , chapter 11. Maimonides writes:

I. Profile Report
  • Name: Messianic Jewish Alliance of America
  • Founder : The group is literally an alliance of Hebrew Christians who believe in Jesus but retain their Jewish identity. When MJAA was founded in the summer of 1979 there were initially thirty-three congregations. Daniel Juster was the first president, but several persons were involved in bringing the alliance into existence. Messianic Jewes attribute the founding of Messianic Judaism to their Messiah, Yeshua, or Jesus of Nazareth.
  • Date of Birth: (0-33 A.D.)
  • Birth Place: Taking into consideration the beliefs of the Messianic Jews that Yeshua was the sole founder, his birthplace was in Bethlehem.
  • Year Founded: The MJAA was founded in 1979. However, many Messianic Jews believe that Messianic Judaism was founded upon the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. During the first century A.D., literally hundreds of thousands of Messianic Jews flourished. In addition, many Messianic Synagogues were scattered throughout the Roman Empire and beyond.
  • Brief History: The Messianic Jewish Alliance of America, or the MJAA, was founded upon a threefold principle. First, to promote a clear and visible testimony to the fact that there resides a substantial and growing movement of Jewish people who believe that Yeshua, or Jesus of Nazareth, is the Jewish Messiah and Savior of the World. Second, to bring together, into one coherent organization, Jewish and non-Jewish people of like faith and mind with the shared vision for the Jewish revival. Third, and most significantly, to introduce the Jewish people to Yeshua, the Messiah.

The modern phenomenon of Jewish believers in Jesus Christ as their Messiah has a long history in the United States, and (as is the case with most modern Jewish history) has strong ties to a European heritage as well. Foundations for the twentieth century were laid, of course, in the nineteenth century and before; worldwide, estimates of Jewish conversions to Christianity approximated 250,000 during the 1800s, including such notables as British Prime Minister Disraeli, Old Testament commentary wri ters Franz Delitzsch and David Baron, and the first Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem, Michael Solomon Alexander. However, in America, this phenomenon has taken on some unique characteristics, the most prominent of which has been the evolution of what was known as " Hebrew Christianity "

Language can both help and trick us in cross-cultural communication. The following material is written in Messianic Jewish terminology and style. It shows us the challenges we "Christians" [ more ] face in cross-cultural communication with Jews. This material is based on Return of the Remnant: The Rebirth of Messianic Judaism Messianic terminology is used to express the biblical faith in the Messiah [ more ] because such terminology was how the New Covenant [ more ] faith was expressed in its earliest stages. Messianic believers like talking about their faith in the Messiah in a manner consistent with Jewish heritage and culture. Belief in the Messiah is consistent with being Jewish. He is the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel. Using Messianic terminology imparts faith in Messiah to children, friends and family in a manner consistent with Jewish heritage. Messianic terms communicate biblical truth without the negative baggage of historical anti-Semitism.

Time to stand by Israel. As I write this article I have just heard that one of our colleagues was injured in London University when he tried to stop a student from defacing a Jewish Society poster with a swastika. The level of hatred against Israel and the Jewish people has reached frightening proportions not just in the Middle East, but here as well. The main reason for this is that the media have adopted a double standard when it comes to reporting events in Israel. Israelis apparently have the right to be killed by Palestinian terrorism, but not to defend themselves against it. I receive daily information from Israel telling me what is happening. Then I turn on the TV and receive a totally different version. Clearly someone is not telling the whole truth.

Romans 11:11 "Again I ask, Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious." A new thing on the Earth In many evangelical circles, there is discussion of a fairly recent, but rapidly growing phenomenon: Messianic Judaism. There are very popular national television shows about it, and no less a publication than Christianity Today magazine has recently done a major article about it. Students at Christian colleges and universities are asking about it. And churches are divided, in the words of the CT writer, "taking turns supporting and condemning" this new happening. What is it? What is Messianic Judaism? That’s a pretty easy question to answer, in general. Messianic Jews are those Jews who believe that the Messiah promised in the Bible has already come (they are waiting for him to come again ), and that He is the one who Christians call Jesus. They maintain their Jewish lifestyle and identity, but believe they are redeemed through God’s grace, by faith in the Messiah, Jesus (who they know as Yeshua, his Hebrew name). There are hundreds of Messianic Jewish congregations, with a growing representation on virtually every continent.

Welcome to Simchat Yisrael. We are a Messianic Jewish Synagogue. A congregation of Jewish and non-Jewish people who believe that Yeshua (Jesus of Nazareth) is the promised Messiah of Israel.
Our congregation exists primarily to provide a spiritual home for Jewish people, intermarried couples and their children, who believe in Yeshua as Messiah, and wish to express their faith as Jewish people. Many non-Jewish people also find in our synagogue a spiritual home. Our services are rooted in the traditional worship services of Judaism. In addition, we celebrate the Jewish Holy Days, and life-cycle events. If you are looking for such a place we invite you to spend Shabbat with us.

    The Messiah
Many Jews have long been skeptical of predictions announcing the imminent arrival of the Messiah ( ). The first century sage Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai once said: "If you should happen to be holding a sapling in your hand when they tell you that the Messiah has arrived, first plant the sapling and then go out and greet the Messiah." An old Jewish story tells of a Russian Jew who was paid a ruble a month by the community council to stand at the outskirts of town so that he could be the first person to greet the Messiah upon his arrival. When a friend said to him, "But the pay is so low," the man replied: "True, but the job is permanent." Yet, the belief in a messiah and a messianic age is so deeply rooted in Jewish tradition that a statement concerning the Messiah became the most famous of Maimonides's Thirteen Principles of Faith : "And Ma'amin , I believe with a full heart in the coming of the Messiah, and even though he may tarry, I will wait for him on any day that he may come." In the concentration camps, it is reported that many Jews sang the

Now, the MAC (under the name "Action Committee for Messianic Judaism" in Hebrew) has been officially recognized as an Israeli not-for-profit organization. This means that the government of Israel now officially recognizes Messianic Judaism! This is really incredible news! Now, because Messianic Jews have stood their ground, Israelis will be faced with a decision. Is whatever type of Judaism they practice (or don't practice) more true than our form of Judaism-Messianic Judaism? Recently, several books have been published describing Messianic Judaism in a rather positive light. A new book, written by a rabbi and yet to be published, describes Messianic Judaism as a branch of Judaism. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw a sketch of a seven-branch menorah that included our brand of Judaism along with Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, and others (see illustration). This book should be available later this year. Because the Messianic synagogue movement respects our Jewish heritage and upholds our national homeland, Israel, the Jewish community is beginning to show us favor. But this is not an entirely new thing.

    The Rise of "Messianic Judaism"
by Peter Hocken The rise of Messianic Judaism in the late 1960's and early 1970's represents as much a new direction and a discontinuity with the "Hebrew Christian" movement as it represents a continuity. The change of title, expressed in the re-naming of the Hebrew Christian Alliance of America as the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America What happened to win over the Jewish believers in Jesus to the Messianic Jewish vision they had earlier been so loath to embrace? The following factors all seem to have played a definite role: (1) the impact of the Six-Day War of 1967; (2) the charismatic movement; (3) the Jesus movement and the student upheavals of 1968. the Israeli victory in the Six-Day War gave a new self-confidence to some Hebrew Christians with a sense of the importance of biblical prophecies concerning Israel. The Jesus movement that was outside the denominations saw many young Jews come to faith in Jesus, and this produced a notable influx of new young believers into the Young Hebrew Christian Alliance. Many future leaders in the Messianic Jewish movement came from this crop of new young believers. Developments within the Messianic Jewish movement in the USA As mentioned, the change from Hebrew Christian terminology to that of Messianic Judaism arose from an influx of mostly young new Jewish believers in Jesus and an impulse to form Messianic synagogues. Much of this new thrust was charismatic. The tensions inherent in the movement, especially concerning the degree of Jewish practice to embody, were augmented by the Evangelical-Charismatic tussle.

As Messianic Jews we present the Good News in a way that demonstrates that being Jewish and believing in Messiah Yeshua are fully compatible. To encourage the growth of Messianic Synagogues, where Jewish and Gentile believers can grow together in the Messianic Faith in an Old/New Testament Jewish setting. Messianic Judaism/Jewish Christianity
Doctrines Messianic Jews/Jewish Christians adhere to certain Jewish practices while acknowledging Jesus (whom they refer to by his Aramaic name Yeshua) as the Messiah foretold in the Hebrew scriptures. Traditional Jewish practices observed by Messianic Jews/Jewish Christians are the Friday evening, lighting Shabbat candles, kiddush and wearing kippot during their service. The service includes the recitation of traditional Jewish prayers in Hebrew, although the words are amended to include Jesus.
According to the constitution of the Messianic Jewish (Hebrew Christian) Alliance "they look to the One God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) as their sole divine authority and acknowledge the Tanach (Old Testament) and Brit Hadshah (New Testament) as the Word of God. They reject the authority of Rabbinical literature. They accept Messiah Yeshua as their personal saviour. They believe in the atonement which he wrought once and for all by His death and His resurrection, and acknowledge Yeshua as the promised Messiah. They have to make public confession of their faith." People of Jewish parentage who share their beliefs are entitled membership; non-Jewish believers, however, are only entitled to associate membership. History The earliest Christians were Jewish Christians whose missions were directed towards the Jews. In spite of St Paul's teaching that observance of the Jewish law was not required for Gentile converts to Christianity, some Jewish Christians continued to insist on the observance aspects of the Jewish law such as abstaining from the consumption of pork and taking ritual baths. These groups were subsequently marginalised as heretics and were in the most part either absorbed into Jewish sects, such as the Zadokites or the Essenes, or into Gentile churches. By the fourth century there were almost no distinctively Jewish congregations left.
