During the nineteenth century, restrictions on the Jewish population were alternately eased and tightened. Alexander II (r. 1855-81), for example, relaxed restrictions on settlement, education, and employment. Alexander's assassination in 1881 brought reimposition of all previous restrictions, which then remained in force until 1917. During that period, Jews were beaten and killed and their property destroyed in government-sanctioned pogroms led by a group called the Black Hundreds. Despite repressive conditions in Russia and high levels of emigration to the United States, the Jewish population grew rapidly in the nineteenth century; by the beginning of World War I, an estimated 5.2 million Jews lived in Russia. Within their areas of settlement, the Russian Jews developed a flourishing culture, and many of them became active in the revolutionary movements that sprang up in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. But much of the long period of violence that began with World War I in 1914 and continued until the Civil War ended in 1921 took place in the regions inhabited by the Jews, many of whom were killed indiscriminately by the various armies struggling for power. After World War I, parts of the western territory of the former Russian Empire became the independent nations of Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland, a development that left many Russian Jews outside the borders of what now was the Soviet Union. By 1922 Russia's Jewish population had been reduced by more than half.

What is Messianic Judaism?
Messianic Jews?....It’s a term that is being heard more and more these days. Succinctly defined, we are Jews who believe that Yeshua (the Hebrew name for Jesus) of Nazareth is the promised Messiah of the Jewish Scriptures. Because we believe Yeshua is the Jewish Messiah, we also believe in maintaining a Jewish lifestyle of faith. Hence, we celebrate all of the biblical holidays (i.e. Passover, Succot, etc.) as well as many of the customs which are consistent with the Scriptures. For much of history it has been assumed that Jewishness and Yeshua are mutually exclusive. Of course, it’s fine for any non-Jew to believe in Him-but a Jew? However, when one stops to study the actual history of this movement, it becomes clear that this assumption was not always the case. After all, this Messianic movement did not originate in Rome or Athens, but started in the land of Israel in the midst of the Jewish people. Most scholars agree that its leader lived a lifestyle consistent with first century Judaism. He worshipped on the "Shabbat" (Luke 4:16 ff.), celebrated all the Jewish holidays such as "Passover" and "Chanukah" (Matthew 26:17 ff.; John 10:22 ff.) and even wore the traditional; "tzitzit" (Matthew 9:20). Likewise, His Name "Yeshua" testifies to His Jewish identity, since it is Hebrew for "Salvation."

Good question...
...did the Messianic Jewish Believers use the OT deceitfully or ignorantly in the New Testament?
[created April 25/98] I received this sweet and honest-spirited email, with a number of excellent questions...I will try to address these as they come up, so I will intersperse my responses (normal font) from the questioner's (boldface) Let's dig in...
Glenn, I hope you can help me out here. I downloaded a discussion dated 26 Jan 1995 regarding the use of the LXX versus the MT . It was very helpful to me in my struggle over an issue I will now detail. I come from a Jewish background and have my spiritual inspiration from Jesus and his followers. I am not one to put my head in the ground, nor take things at face value what the church tells me. I see challenges from my Jewish roots as really opportunities to understand better the world of the Jesus, yet they are always filled with the tension of wanting to stay honest and be willing to lose a formerly cherished belief if presented with a more mature view.
First, let me applaud your attitude of honesty and commitment!

The Church was purchased with the precious blood of Jesus Christ, and before Him there was no church, it was Judaism. It took Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection, and the dispatching of His Holy Spirit for the full birth or delivery of The Church in the natural. It was but one Church that Jesus built and it was built in one format only, and with the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ Church is not Judaism. Judaism: A religion developed among the ancient Hebrews and characterized by belief in one transcendent God who has revealed Himself to Abraham, Moses, and the Hebrew prophets and by a religious life in accordance with Scriptures and rabbinic traditions Conformity to Jewish rites, ceremonies, and practices (Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, 1987). To say that the rituals and traditions of Judaism are needed in The Church for Jewish people who believe Jesus is the Messiah is unfounded. Judaism inhibits the Holy Spirit, whereas the Holy Spirit is

What is a Messianic Gentile?!!
That seems like such a strange term. Perhaps the meaning of the term will become clearer as we attempt to clarify the meaning of "Messianic Jewish". It is generally understood that being Jewish means being a descendent of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and it implies being a follower of Judaism and its practices. In another sense, it is applied to anyone who has joined himself to the people of Israel through ritual conversion, including circumcision for men. The term "Messianic" (i.e. "of Messiah or Christ") refers to anyone, Jew or gentile, who has chosen to follow the Messiah Yeshua (Jesus). Scripturally, the term "gentile' refers to someone who was born of non-Jewish parents and who did not identify himself with Israel through ritual conversion and circumcision. Thus, a "Messianic gentile" could be applied to anyone who was born of non-Jewish parents and who is a follower of Yeshua. Most Messianic gentiles have chosen to worship the Lord in a setting that is largely devoid of any Jewish [culture]- - - -the traditional church. There is, however a small but growing group of gentiles who have left the gentilized form of Christianity to join with their Jewish brothers who worship the Messiah of Israel in an original Jewish way. They have found that in returning to the Jewish roots of their faith they have achieved a deeper understanding and a more fulfilling expression of their faith. Many of these gentiles live out their faith in a Jewish context, celebrating in their own homes the Jewish holidays as fulfilled by Yeshua. They often keep Biblical kashrut (Kosher laws) and other customs freely and without legalism, as a way to worship the Lord.

Question Why am I not finding any information or acknowledgement of Messianic Jews? Is it not true that one who is born a Jew can in no way forfeit that identity as a Jew no matter what he/she believes. Don't they deserve some recognition? Question: Is a Jew still consider Jewish if he/she follows the teaching of Buddha? Answer The Jewish people do say that there's "More than one way to be a good Jew." We have Chassidic vs. Misnagdic, Sefardic vs. Ashkenazic, and even the Talmudic split between Shammai and Hillel. Yet there are limits to pluralism, beyond which a group is schismatic to the point where it is no longer considered Jewish. For example, everyone considers Messianic Judaism and belief in Buddah as outside of the Jewish sphere.
