Overview:
Messianic Judaism is a religious movement, whose membership is primarily made up of ethnic/cultural Jews. They differ from Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox Jews over their beliefs about the Messiah. This difference is sufficient for Morton Klein, the President of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), to have allegedly declared that a Messianic Jew is a " former Jew. " There are many references in the Hebrew Scriptures to the coming of a Messiah who would inspire Jews in Israel to rise and throw off oppression from occupying military powers. Most Jews believe that the Messiah has yet to come; Messianic Jews believe that Yeshua of Nazareth was the expected Messiah. (Yeshua is called Jesus Christ by Christians.) Messianic Jews consider themselves to be fully Jewish. They maintain a " Jewish lifestyle of faith....[they] celebrate all of the biblical holidays (i.e. Passover, Succot, etc) as well as many of the customs which are consistent with the Scriptures. "

Messianic Judaism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Messianic Judaism is any of a group of loosely related religious movements, all claiming a connection with Judaism . Their history can be linked back to such groups as the Ebionites . Beliefs and practice range from evangelical Christianity to close to Orthodox Judaism , while accepting Jesus to be the Messiah (and God) and using the New Testament as scripture . The groups range from those comprised mostly of Jews to those which are mostly gentile in membership; the majority are mixed. Perhaps the best known of the Messianic groups, although certainly not the largest, is the controversial Jews for Jesus . Its stated aims are to educate Evangelical Christians concerning the Jewish origins of their Christian faith, and to convert Jews to Christianity. However, other Messianic organizations do not approve some of their methods of donig so. Most Jewish converts to Christianity do not consider themselves "Messianic Jews". Many Protestant and Catholic churches have Jewish converts among their members, but these members self-identify as Christians. They also sometimes are referred to as

Messianic Judaism started with Yeshua (Jesus of Nazareth) as His Jewish followers This does not mean Messianic Judaism agrees with all the doctrines,
http://www.messianic.com/articles/basics.htm
BASICS OF MESSIANIC JUDAISM
  • YESHUA IS MESSIAH AND L-RD
Messianic Judaism started with Yeshua (Jesus of Nazareth) as His Jewish followers accepted the evidence that He was the promised Messiah (Anointed One) of Israel, and as the scriptures foretold, He also was the God of Israel in the flesh, YHVH, the L-RD, who died for sins according to Isaiah 53, then rose again according to the Psalms and the Prophets. The believers in Yeshua were called Notzrim (Nazarenes), which Christians are called in modern Hebrew today. However, there is that faction today who call themselves Notzrim and say they believe in Yeshua, but they do not accept Him as appearing as God Himself in the flesh. Most of Messianic Judaism does not accept them as true believers because of their denial.
BIBLICAL MESSIANIC JUDAISM IS VALID CONTEMPORARY JUDAISM
Since the first Jewish followers of Yeshua never left the faith of the God of Israel, YHVH, but rather came into a more personal covenant with Him through trust in Messiah Yeshua, their faith was and is the only complete Biblical Judaism and thus a superior Judaism. This is because Messiah Yeshua is the promised deliverer from sin and completed the understanding of the Torah (His ancient Word) that was lacking. However, this does not mean that modern Rabbinical Judaism does not have truth within it.

Last update: 8/6/96 Every now and then I get an email like this one:
or I read a grossly Procrustean description of some 'normative Judaism' of the 1st century like this one : Any Jew with a Pharisaic background (which would have been anyone who was a contemporary of Jesus as well as all Jews today) would have understood that the term "Christ" was a term used in a physical sense to denote one who was claiming a political position. Apart from the seriously mistaken notion that all of Jesus' contemporaries were of Pharisaic background (which seems to be based on James' uncritical use of the fringe-writer Maccoby!), this rather unexciting description of the messianic hope is so out of touch with biblical scholarship of today as to be worthless.
What this nets out to is the popular notion that either:
  • The 1st century Jew HAD NO expectation of a Messiah-figure; or
  • The 1st century Jewish expectation was of a purely natural, human-only, regular political leader.
Both of these positions are COMPLETELY mistaken in the light of the 'HARD' data we have.

I asked a former member of such a group to explain to me what these terms meant. His reply- they are synonyms! We are talking about Jews who have converted to Christianity. However they will tell you that they are still Jewish and that it is possible for a Jew to be both Jewish and a believer in Jesus/Yeshua. The groups listed are for the most part Christian supported and staffed. They usually have as their leaders ordained ministers. Their common goal is to bring the Jewish people to accept Jesus as the promised Jewish Messiah and the savior of the world. That he died for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day. All who believe in him, Jew or Gentile will be saved. The Jewish community has categorized Tequniques that they use to accomplish the mission of bringing Jews to accept Jesus/Yeshua, as being deceptive and offensive.
