Our Denomination Our Denomination Yakima Foursquare Church is part of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. The early 20th century evangelist, Aimee Semple McPherson, was a pioneer of women in religion. Having experienced a profound religious conversion at age 17, Aimee began preaching across the United States and later, the world. In 1918, she established her base in Los Angeles, California, where in 1923, the 5,500 seat Angelus Temple was dedicated and became the center of her revival, healing and benevolent ministries. She was the first woman to receive a FCC radio license and was a pioneer religious broadcaster. Her sermons were the first to incorporate the contemporary communications of that day into her preaching of the Gospel. From Angelus Temple she performed an extensive social ministry, providing hot meals for more than 1.5 million people during the Great Depression. She summarized her message into four major points known as "The Foursquare Gospel," and founded a denomination called The International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. From its beginning at Angelus Temple, The International Church of the Foursquare Gospel has now grown to include more than 1,900 churches in the United States and Canada, and over 24,000 churches worldwide. There are currently more than 2.8 million members in 99 countries around the world.

Yet, her ministry was known for helping those in need by providing food or job assistance during hard times. She ministered to people from all walks of life. Rossi account challenged Ron Williams, historian for the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, declined to comment on the film because he had not seen it nor read the script. He did relate that church members who viewed the film found the portrayal of McPherson to be misleading and disappointing. Although formal charges against her were eventually dismissed, McPherson was accused of staging her own kidnapping after she surfaced in the Arizona desert a month after she disappeared from Venice Beach. Although the public speculated on what might have happened, she claimed to have escaped from kidnappers who had drugged her and held her for ransom in Mexico. Rumors widely circulated then that she had been seen in Carmel, Calif., with her radio station engineer.

Recovering the Ancient Paths by Dennis L. Corrigan "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever" The following is a revision of a letter (article) we wrote to the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel to explain our decision to withdraw from that organization in order to pursue our being catechized unto Chrismation into the Orthodox Church. We have revised it to make it more useful for a more general distribution by members of our congregation who may want to help in explaining our decision to families and friends. The Carpenter's Company is in the process of becoming a part of the Orthodox Church. This obviously means that we have had to withdraw from the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel which we did in early May, 1996. All this is actually the culmination of a journey which began for us in 1987 when the Holy Spirit commanded us to ask for the "ancient paths" (Jeremiah 6:16). A Journey Begins Our quest for the ancient paths did not actually get underway until June 17, 1989 when we began to meet every morning at six o'clock for prayer. We soon called it Vigil, the name given to the night office of prayer for over fifteen hundred years. We could not possibly have anticipated where this path would eventually lead us. Nor could we have foreseen that Vigil would last so long or become what it has. A Spiritual Focus By the time two years had passed, we had become a people with an intense spiritual focus. I suppose that is to be expected of a people who meet every day for prayer. We were beginning to give focused attention to issues to which we had only given lip service before.
