Or Hadash, A New Light in Metropolitan Birmingham's Jewish Community WHAT IS SECULAR HUMANISTIC JUDAISM? Secular Humanistic Judaism is a distinct alternative to Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist Judaism. It is estimated that close to 20% of world Jewry embraces Secularism, although many Humanistic Jews are presently unaffiliated. Secular Humanistic Judaism promotes certain important values in Jewish life that the traditional establishments have resisted. These values are rationality, personal autonomy, gender equality, the celebration of human strength and power, and the development of a pluralistic world with mutual understanding and cooperation among all religions and philosophies of life. Humanistic Jews affirm that:
  • we have the power and responsibility to shape our own lives independent of supernatural authority. our beliefs are expressed in our behavior. the freedom and dignity of the Jewish people must go hand in hand with the freedom and dignity of every human being.

Secular Humanistic Judaism : Rejecting God
Humans, not God, are at the center of this Jewish denomination.
By Yehuda Bauer
The following article about Secular Humanistic Judaism is written by a scholar affiliated with that movement. The author's characterizations of Jews in other religious streams, e.g., his suggestion that religious spirituality and ethics are contingent upon the threat of divine punishment, and his claim that those who believe in a God who does not control their lives are actually secularists, are not necessarily identical to the ways in which these Jews characterize their own religious positions. Reprinted with permission from Judaism in a Secular Age: An Anthology of Secular Humanistic Jewish Thought , edited by Renee Kogel and Zev Katz. Secular Jews come in different shapes and forms: nonreligious Zionists, nonreligious Yiddishists, and those who do not choose to identify as either Zionists or Yiddishists but are acculturated to the host society, such as many North American Jews who are quite happy where they are, speak and think English, are at home in the American culture, but also feel their Jewishness quite strongly and wish to identify with Jewish matters and causes. Regardless of which of these categories they fall into, secular Jews seek an interpretation of Jewish civilization that accords with their own preferences, attitudes, and beliefs. Who Should Define Themselves as "Secular"?

About Oraynu Originally founded in 1969 by a group of families as the Secular Jewish Association, ORAYNU CONGREGATION FOR HUMANISTIC JUDAISM is based on the cultural and philosophical ideals of the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah) that originated more than 200 years ago.
n Humanistic Jews are cultural Jews who find that Judaism is most meaningful in the context of a secular worldview and humanistic values. As a Congregation, we celebrate Jewish identity and blend tradition with contemporary rational thinking. We enrich our lives with the High Holidays, Oneg Shabbats, by enjoying Jewish music, Jewish history, and by cultivating our ties to the Jewish community and the State of Israel. We instill our children with a love of Jewish culture and a pride in their Jewish heritage. As Jews and as human beings, we believe that we have the power and responsibility to direct the course of our lives.

Toward a True Alliance of Humanistic and Secular Jews
by Hershl Hartman
Educational Director, Los Angeles Sholem Community Organization/School Both ideological distinctiveness and differing approaches to organizational processes have been submerged in the name of unity and civility. For various reasons, it has been CSJO that most often gave way to SHJ. As a result, the structures of IFSHJ and its affiliated International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism (IISHJ), the procedure by which they are governed, and the positions they espouse, have become more and more uncomfortable for many CSJO affiliates and their leaders. The record of attendance (more accurately, non-attendance) of CSJO members at IFSHJ and IISHJ events speaks louder than any report or resolution. CSJO members, in frustration, have simply "voted with their feet."

The term secular humanistic judaism best encompasses these principles. Pluralism is another key principle of secular humanistic judaism.

So You Want to be a Secular Humanist Jew
An essay by author Bennett Muraskin, Congress of Secular Jewish Organizations For most of the older generation, Jewish secularism needs no explanation. It flows directly from their Yiddish immigrant background and their experience as progressives. However, this will not suffice for many English-speaking, mainly middle-class North American Jews, their children and grandchildren. Pluralism is another key principle of secular humanistic Judaism. There never has been one "true" way to be Jewish. Judaism has been reinvented many times by priests, rabbis, mystics and rationalists to meet the needs of changing times. It has been most creative when it adapted elements of other cultures, as in Babylonia, or during the Hellenistic period, the Spanish/Islamic period, the Italian Renaissance and, of course, in the modern era. Secular humanistic Jews believe that we need positive reasons to remain Jewish that are rooted in our experience as an urban, educated, international people committed to democratic values, who will invariably remain small minorities within non-Jewish societies. This means that neither Torah, anti-Semitism, Holocaust remembrance nor Israel is the basis of our Jewishness. As secular humanistic Jews, we are not afraid of an open society. In fact, we welcome it because it creates new opportunities for change and innovation.

Humanistic Judaism
July 1994
One of the books I've recently read for my August class at the Humanist Institute is Judaism Beyond God , by Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine. I highly recommend reading it to gain a better understanding of both Judaism and humanism. Rabbi Wine is one of the founders of the Society for Humanistic Judaism. To paraphrase the author's conclusions, humanists want to bring their beliefs and their behavior together and are eager to affirm the following:
  • That they are the disciples of The Secular Revolution. That reason is the best method for the discovery of truth. That morality derives from human needs. That the universe is indifferent to the desires of human beings. That people must ultimately rely on people. That the humanist has a positive role to play in life.
Humanists want to translate these affirmations and commitments into an effective life-style. They need a community of believers to work with and to share with in this venture. They also need a cadre of trained leaders and spokespeople to provide scholarship and guidance. Flo Wineriter

Secular Humanistic Judaism
TEN FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES OF SECULAR HUMANISTIC JUDAISM
Secular Humanistic Jews share the following foundational principles and are committed to behaviour and practices that are consistent with these principles and worldview. 1. ON NATURE AND REALITY - Human beings are part of the evolving natural universe which we view through our senses and understand through rational thought. The universe exists on natural laws, independent of supernatural intervention. There is no evidence supporting any conscious life after death.
2. ON THE PURPOSE OR MEANING OF LIFE - Although there is no single over-arching purpose to life, self-actualization for every human being gives life purpose. Only the individual can create specific meaning in her/his life. Perpetuating life and improving its quality can add profound meaning to human life.
3. ON SPIRITUALITY - Spirituality is that which ennobles the human spirit. It is a sense of inner harmony achieved from feeling connected to nature and other humans or from apprehension of beauty both in nature and in the artistic and intellectual creations of human beings.
4. ON THE NATURE OF TRUTH - Uncertainty is a condition of life and our conceptions of truths evolve as our knowledge and understanding deepen. Truths can be discovered through reason via scientific method and empirical evidence, not through faith or by intuition alone. Truths are universal, not ethnic, and the value of ideas is judged by their truth, not their Jewishness.

About Humanistic Judaism What is Humanistic Judaism?
Kol Hadash Humanistic Congregation is affiliated with the national movement of Humanistic Judaism. Humanistic Judaism was created by Jews who wanted their Jewish identity to be consistent with the reality of how they lived. If they relied on science and academic study to understand their history and themselves, they wanted a Judaism that incorporated current scholarship into its self-conception, even if new ideas led to very different conclusions from traditional teachings. If they met, learned from, and loved people from other cultures, they wanted a Judaism that was open enough to welcome and celebrate such encounters. And if they lived lives independent of supernatural authority, they wanted a Judaism that read texts and sang songs which affirmed the power and responsibility of human beings to be the masters of their own lives. That Judaism is Humanistic Judaism, and Humanistic Judaism may be the right Judaism for you and your family. Society for Humanistic Judaism Core Principles
adopted October 8, 1999
