A philosophical look at theoretical antihumanism.

MAPPING THE TERRAIN OF THEORETICAL ANTI-HUMANISM by Sean Homer In the recent publication of his 1992 Welleck Lecture Series, The Seeds of Time per se . Hopefully, what will become clear from the exposition that follows is that both positions are more complex, and indeed more contradictory, than they generally credit the other side with being. Why Theoretical Anti-Humanism? The case against humanism, as I understand it, revolves around two central issues: those of essentialism and morality. In other words, the belief in the humanist premise that there is an essential or universal essence of "man," and that this essence is an attribute of all individuals, or, what we would call "human nature". The corollary of this conception of a universal human nature is that it can form the basis for moral judgements and actions. However, it is not so much the emphasis upon the effectivity of moral action that differentiates humanists from anti-humanists but rather, as Kate Soper argues in Humanism and Anti-Humanism , the defence of moral action as a form of "truth" in itself, in its own right.2 These dual aspects of essentialism and morality are what Althusser criticises as the "humanist type structure," and for the rigorously scientistic Althusser any form of argument that rests upon ethical or moral criteria precludes genuine theoretical analysis and understanding. At a less theoretical level, the endorsement of humanism was seen as analogous to the privileging of a particular conception of the subject, usually the white, heterosexual, male subject. Theoretical anti-humanism's political cutting edge was the rejection of a singular, universal conception of the subject and the attempt to open up spaces for the articulation and acknowledgement of different forms of subjectivity.

One of the problems in the field of religion and ethical systems is that certain terms (e.g. Atheism, Agnosticism, Humanism) have multiple meanings. Perhaps the most impressive example of confusion are the terms "Witch" and "Witchcraft." They have at least 17 different definitions. The vast majority of adults in North America are theists: they believe in a God or supreme power. They may regard God as a unity (as in Judaism, Islam, and Sikhism) or a duality (a God and Goddess as in Wicca), a Trinity (as in most Christian faith groups), etc. But there is a growing minority of adults who have abandoned traditional organized religious beliefs about deity and define themselves in various ways: Agnosticism is not a religion or complete ethical system. It is simply a belief that we cannot prove either the existence or the non-existence of deity; (i.e. of one or more gods, one or more goddesses, or combinations of the above). Many Agnostics believe that we can never know about the existence of a deity. Others suggest that we cannot know anything about deity or deities at this time with the currently available evidence, but that this could conceivably change in the future. Atheism is also not a religion or a complete ethical system. It has two main definitions:

The intelligent evaluation, transformation, control, and direction of such associations and institutions with a view to the enhancement of human life is the purpose and program of humanism. Certainly religious institutions, their ritualistic forms, ecclesiastical methods, and communal activities must be reconstituted as rapidly as experience allows, in order to function effectively in the modern world. Humanism maintains there is no evidence a supernatural power ever needed or wanted anything from people, ever communicated to them, or ever interfered with the laws of nature to assist or harm anyone. Humanism's focus, then, is on using human efforts to meet human needs and wants in this world. History shows that those efforts are most effective when they involve both compassion and the scientific method - which includes reliance on reason, evidence, and free inquiry. Humanism says people can find purpose in life and maximize their long-term happiness by developing their talents and using those talents for the service of humanity. Humanists believe that this approach to life is more productive and leads to a deeper and longer-lasting satisfaction than a hedonistic pursuit of material or sensual pleasures that soon fade.

These installations of his materials offer a first-hand, tactile experience of Aalto's brilliant synthesis of color, material, form, and scale. They are intended to convey something of the power of his architectural work that can otherwise only be experienced by visiting an Aalto building.

Humanism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Humanism is an active ethical and philosophical approach to life focusing on human solutions to human issues through rational arguments without recourse to a god, gods, sacred texts or religious creeds. Humanism has become a kind of implied ethical doctrine (" -ism ") whose sphere is expanded to include the whole human ethnicity, as opposed to traditional ethical systems which apply only to particular ethnic groups Many early doctrines calling themselves "humanist" were based on Protagoras 's famous claim that "man is the measure of all things." In context, this asserted that people are the ultimate determiners of value and morality— not objective or absolutist codices. In its time, Protagoras' statement was a radical and objective view of the human condition, which has convincingly refuted absolutism for much of Western philosophical history since. Subsequent interpretations of this "principle" became split between relativism and universalism —the former views all ethics as derived from the individual ( individualism ), while the latter views ethics as meaningful only if they are applicable to all. While relativism gained prominence during the
