Another Onion Bit We Can't Pass Up
From their flood coverage Another Saints Season Ruined Before It Begins NEW ORLEANS Front-office executives of the New Orleans Saints football team provided a much-needed dose of normalcy Monday when they announced that, for the 23rd year running, the Saints season had been ruined before it began. "I'd say this is even worse than when Mike Ditka traded away all our draft picks to get Ricky Williams," said Saints vice president of pro-personnel operations Bill Kuharich. "But there's one thing we Saints can always rely on: our chances for a winning season being shitcanned before we play a single down. We're proud to have carried on with this tradition despite everything." The National Football League has declined the Saints' "mercy rule" request to be allowed to forfeit all their home games, saying the team must set an example for its home city by being blown out in every contest. 07-Sep-2005 11:39

We'd say "unbelievable," except it's not
In some swing states, Democratic voter registration efforts are absolutely trouncing similar efforts across the aisle. So in Ohio, the Republican Secretary of State is attempting to invalidate many of the new registrations based on the weight of the paper they're printed on (the blog's PDF link is also here ; it's a reprint from a Dayton paper). 27-Sep-2004 18:55

That fair city's forces of prudishness (both of them) were dealt a setback last week in their efforts to stop the "Naked Yoga Guy" from doing, well, yoga in the buff at Fisherman's Wharf: "Simply being naked on the street is not a crime in San Francisco," said Debbie Mesloh, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office.

Review: Bowie returns to the edge with 'Heathen'
By David Browne Entertainment Weekly (Entertainment Weekly) Buried inside a new coffee-table book documenting the work of uberpaparazzo Ron Galella is a fascinating time-capsule photo of old-school rock elite. The shot, taken backstage at the Grammys in 1976, is a group huddle of Simon and Garfunkel, John and Yoko, and a vampire. Actually, the bloodsucker is David Bowie, who seems to be kicking off his well-documented period of drugs and excess in the most appropriate manner. The cheeks are bony and caved in, the skin looks like it could tear at any moment, and the foppish suit and hat can't hide the overall feel of youthful decay. He's like a party-hearty cadaver. I'm tired of attending funerals for David Bowie's career. I mean, they're always pleasant, catered affairs, and the chance to hobnob with a star-studded crowd of washed-up mourners like Lou Reed and Iggy Pop is undeniably great, but David never actually shows up. Critics have tried to write him off for more than a decade, and his work has been mostly sub-par even longer. But somehow, some way, he's managed to scrape together enough of the old Bowie charm on every release to keep alive the hope that he might just have one final hurrah left in him. Unlike some of his contemporaries (I'm looking at you, Iggy), he might, conceivably, still have a fighting chance. But while everyone's busy measuring his latest work against the towering legacy of Ziggy and the Spiders and looking ahead to his next last gasp, it would be easy to overlook that Heathen is the best Bowie release in years.

Bowie on Area2, Moby and 'Heathen'
Bowie: 'If you're bright enough to take an interest in life, you're going to be an interesting person, whether you're 100 years old or 15 years old.' (CNN) Twenty-five years ago, David Bowie sang Christmas song duets with Bing Crosby. Today, Bowie tours with Moby's Area2 festival and even sometimes does duets with the techno-pop maven. Generational differences and all of the related, complicated musical tensions do not bother this man. Bowie's Area2 touring is to promote his latest album, "Heathen," a nominee for the United Kingdom's prestigious Mercury Music Prize. According to Bowie, the festival has fit him well, with its genre-crossing nature making age unimportant. "You just have to be a continuing part of what's going on," he says.

Oasis finds 'heathen chemistry' at last
Noel Gallagher: "We had a jolly good time making this record." (CNN) Gaining an upper hand on the world is a nice thing, as Noel Gallagher of Oasis would tell you. And any rocker with the audacity to release an album titled "Heathen Chemistry" is hardly likely to feel he's fighting an uphill battle.  Nevertheless, fans of Oasis know that, of all bands, finding a chemistry even a heathen one is no small feat for this famously contentious bunch. But the drugs are gone, and the drinking is less, according to Gallagher. The brothers' legendary fights have dropped off too, he says.  And this latest entry from Oasis, which hit stores July 2, has been received well by critics and fans. The British band's fifth studio album signals a renewal of sorts: two new members, more writing from Noel's brother Liam, and a purer rock 'n' roll spirit overall. Oasis' new recording, still rolling with the bluesy lows and anthem highs of rock, works hard to live up to its title. Gallagher says he can feel the change in the spirit. "Now it's more like a vocation again," he says.

53. Heathen Culture, Art, Literature, Warfare And Politics Of Heathen
heathen.org promotes heathen and pagan culture as an alternative to the JudeoChristian influence in politics, culture, the arts and commerce that is now
http://www.heathen.org/
Heathenism
Before Christianity came to Europe, the religion and culture and society were based around heathen beliefs, sometimes referred to also as pagan, pantheist, animist or naturalist beliefs. Heathenism was the dominant influence that shaped the people of the rugged lands of Nothern Europe during the period when they emerged from relative primitivism into a technological state. As culture and abundance flourished in the separate tribes of the European forests, the invading Christians found it opportune to slaughter as many of these tribes as possible, drawing more people into the generic traditions of national culture which provided opportune ground for the Church to control. Soon the parasitic priest with his gleaming dark eyes had seized control of those who were weakened, and they succumbed to the virus and with its numbers were able to crush the heathen tribes, as the great Aztec and Maya were crushed in the Americas, and the Romans were crushed on the Italian peninsula, and the Egyptians even fell prey to decadence years before. Built over time from the remnants and castoffs and forgottens of several great fallen empires, Christianity was an optimum design to take over minds. The heathens fought back well but without a means of explaining what was transpiring behind a mysterious symbolic shield, they were overcome from within and never had a chance. Some time has since passed. The descendants of those who many generations ago first became accustomed to living under the cross are now coming of age, and feeling without hope regarding the social situation in the countries taken over by non-heathen and anti-pagan Judeo-Christian religions. The infiltration of alien ideals has ceased, and heathens are gathering to celebrate an ancient way: a life unified wth the methods of nature, pagan naturalistic religions, a belief in death and life as conjoined, a tradition of learning and bravery, and a pantheistic morality which allowed vital action to be taken without a fear of doing "wrong."

What is Witchcraft?
Witchcraft is the continuation of the native cultural beliefs and practices of the ancient Europeans as they continued to be passed down and followed, generation after generation, after the advent of Christianity. Witchcraft is the name that was given to these practices by the Catholic Church and was not the name by which those who followed these beliefs and practices originally called their religion.
Stance On Wicca We believe that everyone has the right to their own beliefs. We believe that people, regardless of their religion, should understand their chosen religion and why they believe as they do. Today, far too many people are ignorant of their religion and rely on poorly documented books and authors to instruct them on what they claim to be their beliefs. The information and questions contained in this website will hopefully help those who truly seek to learn, to question their own religious paradigm. The key element to ANY religion is to truly understand your beliefs.

60. When Is A Celt Not A Celt?
A commentary of Neopagan views of history by Joanna HautinMayer, cofounder of Vanaheim Hof, a heathen magical group.
http://www.cyberwitch.com/wychwood/Library/whenIsACeltNotACelt.htm
W HEN IS A C ELT NOT A C ELT An Irreverent peek into Neopagan views of history
by Joanna Hautin-Mayer Truth is the daughter of time - Old English Proverb In this essay I intend to examine a number of books that have been published recently on Celtic mythology, Druidry, and various forms of "Celtic Wicca" with an eye to their historical veracity. While I appreciate that the value of the metaphysical often cannot be quantified by means of such documentation, I feel that it is essential to use critical analysis in examining any magical system which claims to have an historical basis. History is usually written by the winners. This fact becomes obvious to anyone who has ever made a study of the subject. Many Neopagans and Wiccans feel at odds with written history in general because they consider it to be "patriarchal" and highly biased. And for many people the academic atmosphere often associated with the study of the past can be intimidating. Curious amateurs may feel out of their depth. For these same people, the believe that "mundane" history has little bearing on "us" Neopagans has degenerated into the notion that, because we don't like the history we havefor whatever reasonwe have every right to create a history for ourselves that we do like. Hence we don't need to document where we really come from and what has really happened to us; we can simply invent a history to suit ourselves. I need not go into detail about how ill-advised such behavior is, but I will say that we ought to consider our history to be a foundation and starting point for all our actions. Even with an unpleasant but honest history, we are in a better position for creating change; without a real history we are lost.
