GNOSTICISM
GNOSTICISM On the whole, then, for an exposition of Gnosticism we arc thrown back upon the polemical writings of the Fathers in their controversy with heresy. The most ancient of these is Justin who according to his Apol. i. 26 wrote a Syntagma against al heresies (c. A.D. 150), and also, probably, a special polemic against lichen Literatur, Teil I. V. 171; ib. Teil II. Chronologie der altchrfstl Literatur~ i. 533 seq.; also Liechtenhahn, Die Offenbarung in Gnosticismus (1901). 2 For the text see A. Merx, Bardesanes von Edessa (1863), and A Hilgenfeld, Bardesanes der letzte Gnostiker (I864). Ed. Petermacin-Schwartze; newly translated by C. Schmidt Koptisch-gnostische Schriften, i. (1905), in the series Die gniechische~ - christlichen Schriftsteller der ersten drei Jahrhunderte; see alsi A. Harnack, Texte und Untersuchungen, Bd. vii. Heft 2 (1891), ani Chronologie der altchristlichen Literatur, ii. 193-195. possessed a secret and mysterious knowledge, in no way accessible to those outside, which was not to be proved or propagated, but believed in by the initiated, and anxiously guarded as a secret. This knowledge of theirs was not based on reflection, on scientific inquiry and proof, but on revelation. It was derived directly from the times of primitive Christianity; from the Saviour himself and his disciples and friends, with whom they claimed to be connected by a secret t?adition, or else from later prophets, of whom many sects boasted. It was laid down in wonderful mystic writings, which were in the possession of the various circles (Liechtenbahn, Die Off enbarung im Gnosticismus, 1901).

DANGEROUS GNOSTICISM ON THE RISE Harry Potter, The Star Wars Series, The Matrix Are Signs of Renewal of Gnosticism NORTH HAVEN CT., April 14, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The National Catholic Register on line has just published two articles by Father Alfonso Aguilar on the dangerous growing phenomenon of the ancient heresy of gnosticism. Fr. Aguilar writes that "Gnosticism may be, at the beginning of the third millennium, the most dangerous enemy to our Christian faith".
The author says that gnosticism is the ideological soil that "Harry Potter, the Star Wars series, The Matrix, Masonry, New Age and the Raelian cult, which claims to have cloned the first baby", all have in common. The entertaining movies are not harmful in themselves emphasizes Aguilar, but they are "signs" of the "atheistic religion" and "alternative spirituality" of gnosticism.
Pope John Paul has written that gnosticism has returned "under the guise of the so-called New Age". Gnosticism emphasizes acquiring "secret knowledge". Part of that secret knowledge, supposedly given only to a few "spiritual" people, is that only spirit is good and "Everything material, like man's body, is foul and evil". This contradicts Christian teaching that the all creation was made good and that both body and soul will rise for eternity.

What Is Gnosticism?
Karen L. King
A distinctive Christian heresy? A competitor of burgeoning Christianity? A pre-Christian folk religion traceable to "Oriental syncretism"? How do we account for the disparate ideas, writings, and practices that have been placed under the Gnostic rubric? To do so, Karen King says, we must first disentangle modern historiography from the Christian discourse of orthodoxy and heresy that has pervadedand distortedthe story. Exciting discoveries of previously unknown ancient writingsespecially the forty-six texts found at Nag Hammadi in 1945are challenging historians of religion to rethink not only what we mean by Gnosticism but also the standard account of Christian origins. The Gospel of Mary and The Secret Book of John , for example, illustrate the variety of early Christianities and are witness to the struggle of Christians to craft an identity in the midst of the culturally pluralistic Roman Empire. King shows how historians have been misled by ancient Christian polemicists who attacked Gnostic beliefs as a "dark double" against which the new faith could define itself. Having identified past distortions, she is able to offer a new and clarifying definition of Gnosticism. Her book is thus both a thorough and innovative introduction to the twentieth-century study of Gnosticism and a revealing exploration of the concept of heresy as a tool in forming religious identity.

Gnosticism is one of the few civilized belief systems that is not overturned by the critique of civilization, but just gets its hair blown a little, and then can hang around and have a dialogue. . . . For gnosticism to stand, it only has to agree that wild creatures are not in the prison. Anyone who has spent ten minutes watching swallows at sunset will not accept a belief system that declares a need for swallows to awaken. As Edward Abbey said: Gnosticism could turn this criticism to its advantage by simply identifying nature as the more-real outside world, and civilization (both its mental and physical aspects) as the construct. Or you could get really smart, and say that the prison includes the physical interpretation of nature, and to get outside it we have to see beyond the physical swallows, to the spiritual world that underlies them as the ocean underlies its surface. Gospel of Thomas The Hypostasis of the Archons On the Origin of the World , and the Apocryphon of John
Then Eve, being a force, laughed at their decision. She put mist into their eyes and secretly left her likeness with Adam. She entered the tree of knowledge and remained there. And they pursued her, and she revealed to them that she had gone into the tree and become a tree. Then, entering a great state of fear, the blind creatures fled.

Welcome back to the Hermetic Fellowship Website!
This site is dedicated to serving as a general resource for students and practitioners of the Western Hermetic Tradition, and as a specific resource for the Alexandrine Temple of the Hermetic Fellowship, located in Portland, Oregon, USA. We apologize for the interruption of access to the Hermetic Fellowship Website. The Website is back online and running again now at our new domain www.hermeticfellowship.org The Hermetic Fellowship Website had been up and running without interruption at the same URL for six years...until last month. We temporarily lost service as our original local Internet service provider was absorbed by OneMain.com , which was itself then gobbled up by the omnivorous EarthLink , who discarded the Teleport servers. If you are also disgruntled by your treatment at the hands of remote mega-corporations, and think you would enjoy our disgruntled rant, it will be left here for a little while before it discretely vanishes like all good rants :-).

An essay by Norman Williams Crabbe that describes the basic structure of Freemasonry and its esoteric characteristics.
http://www.theosophy-nw.org/theosnw/world/modeur/ph-crabb.htm
Fundamentals of Freemasonry
By Norman Williams Crabbe, MPS Freemasonry uses allegorical symbols to teach a philosophy concerning the nature of the Creator, the origins of the universe, and humanity's universal destiny. The religious doctrines in which most people are raised are designed to satisfy the basic needs of the general population. To get a truer understanding of the nature of Deity requires a long-term commitment of study. The Freemasonic initiate is put on the path of this study by being initiated into the fraternity of Masonry, a Westernized religious Mystery school. If the initiate studies the ritual, he will receive, proportionate to his ability to understand, deep mystic revelations regarding the nature of the universe and our mystic journey through it. Freemasonry keeps alive this knowledge from generation to generation until such time as it is understood and accepted by all beings. Though dealing exclusively with religious themes, Freemasonry is not a religion: no one dogma is professed as being particularly Masonic. Nor is the Masonic Lodge a place of worship; it would be better considered a classroom. Freemasonry "teaches" an occult philosophy to lead the initiate towards the essence of religious thought. All that is required of the initiate is an expressed belief in higher intelligence (God); therefore, no atheist can become a Mason. Religions in and of themselves are made by mankind to explain Deity. Freemasons come in all colors and nationalities and may worship Jehovah, Jesus, Mohammed, or Krishna, to name a few.
