Gnosticism
By John Lash
February 2001
Essay 13 from The Seeker's Handbook - The Complete Guide to Spiritual Pathfinding, 1991, by John Lash. This book is currently under revision for re-publication late in 2001. The following essay is taken from the revised version. Gnosticism as it appears today is a huge shambles, like the ruins of a once vast and magnificent temple. Historically, it may be defined as an elite movement whose members asserted the liberating power of spiritual knowledge over the promise of salvation from God on high. This viable option to Christian faith was brutally suppressed when the Catholic Church came to power. Until 1945 the record of Gnostic teachings came exclusively from its opponents, the early Christian fathers, who only cited the Gnostics to refute them. Imagine having the prosecutor's dossier on a case tried two thousand years ago, and trying to reconstruct from it the viewpoint of the defendant! With the discovery of the Nag Hammadi library (NHL), precious source materials came to light. Scholars now recognize that Gnosticism comprised a sophisticated system of theological and cosmological teachings, its origins far more ancient that initially supposed.

Gnosticism Gnosticism, derived from a Greek word gnosis meaning 'knowledge', is applied to a philosophical and religious movement that influenced the Mediterranean world from the first century BC to the third century AD. It expressed itself in a variety of pagan, Jewish, and Christian forms. Its name is derived from the fact that it promised salvation through a secret knowledge or understanding of reality possessed by its devotees. Previously known mostly from the writings of its Christian opponents, gnosticism can now be studied in a collection of original documents found near the Egyptian town of Nag Hammadi in 1945. Despite the complex diversity of Gnostic groups and their teachings, the basic doctrines of gnosticism formed an identifiable pattern of belief and practice. A pervasive dualism underlay much of Gnostic thought. Good and evil, light and darkness, truth and falsehood, spirit and matter were opposed to one another in human experience as being and nonbeing. The created universe and human experience were characterized by a radical disjunction between the spiritual, which was real, and the physical, which was illusory. This disjunction resulted from a cosmic tragedy, described in a variety of ways by Gnostic mythology, as a consequence of which sparks of deity became entrapped in the physical world. These could be freed only by saving knowledge that was revealed to a spiritual elite by a transcendent messenger from the spirit world, variously identified as Seth (one of the sons of Adam)

Gnosticism of the 20th Century: The New Age Or An Old Lie?
Craig Branch Many people are becoming aware of what is commonly referred to as " The New Age Movement ." To most people, these diverse beliefs and practices seemed to grow out of nowhere. The term "New Age" is somewhat misleading as it actually refers to a coming new era, a new state of existence - the "dawning of the Age of Aquarius." Adherents claim that this new state of utopian global bliss and consciousness will occur when enough people are converted or initiated. Actually the beliefs and practices are very, very old. Their root lies in the dawn of time and began to grow and branch out throughout Biblical and modern history.

NewsWithViews.com With the publication of The DaVinci Code and the release of the Matrix films, Gnosticism has experienced a cultural revival in the West. Is the rise of Gnostic thinking simply a fleeting trend, like the outrageous clothing that Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera wear one day and never don again? Perhaps. Yet, it is interesting to note that the popularization of Darwinian evolution preceded Gnosticism’s ascendancy in the West. The significance of this fact becomes evident when one reads the words of Dr. Wolfgang Smith: As a scientific theory, Darwinism would have been jettisoned long ago. The point, however, is that the doctrine of evolution has swept the world, not on the strength of its scientific merits, but precisely in its capacity as a Gnostic myth. It affirms, in effect, that living beings created themselves, which is in essence a metaphysical In light of this intriguing observation, one could view the current rise of Gnosticism as the natural corollary of Darwinism’s unquestionable epistemological primacy in the West. The current Gnostic revival could represent the next stage of Darwinism’s metastasis.

fear : a strong emotion due to foreseeing or becoming aware of danger . At its best, fear helps us protect ourselves, and helps remind us that we don't have control over everything in our lives (and never will). At its worst, fear can turn us into murderous bigots or quivering cowards. There are many kinds of fear : sudden fear ( alarm ), strong desire not to do something ( dread ), brief but strong loss of composure ( panic ), fear of one specific thing beyond all reason ( phobia ), fear of unfavorable results ( worry ), and the surrender to extreme fear ( terror ). Psalm 23 says "I shall fear no evil, for Thou art with me". Fears that are turned over to God will be muted or will go away. When we stop trying to be in control and let God be in control, there is no cause for fear, for the One in Control loves us and seeks the best for us. Trust in God's love casts out fear. Go against God, and there is no reason not to be in terror.

    Introduction
Gnosticism is a contemporary term used to describe a variety of groups in Greco-Roman antiquity. Before 1945, these groups were known primarily from the polemical attacks written against them by early Christian leaders. In 1945, thirteen books or codices of original gnostic texts were discovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt. These fourth-century papyrus manuscripts reveal the beliefs of various Hellenistic sects from the second to the fourth centuries of the common era (100-400 CE
Gnostic groups shared two essential features. First, they believed in gnosis (Greek for knowledge), which they understood to be a saving knowledge of the divine, self, and world. Second, they viewed the cosmos in radically dualistic terms, segregating the pure and spiritual/rational realm of the divine from the impure and material realm of the created world.

An Alternative Understanding of Gnosticism An Extract from John Lash's "Approaching Gnosticism" Nearly all scholars maintain that Gnosticism arose historically with Christianity, but I take a different view, as follows: Gnosis was a spiritual path of millennial duration, closely related to, yet distinct from, well-known traditions of Pan-Asian mysticism, including Indian yoga and Buddhism. Gnostics were telestes I also depart from orthodox scholarship in looking outside the genre to develop an historical profile for Gnosticism. No scholar would say that Gnostics were from the Mystery Schools, because there is a disciplinary fence between Gnostic studies and Mystery School studies. Thus, Elaine Pagels insists flatly that there is no evidence (by which she means textual evidence) of such a link. But pioneer researchers, such as Theosophical scholar G. R. S. Mead, assumed Gnosis to be the core teaching of the Mysteries. "Gnostic forms are found to preserve elements of the Mystery-traditions of antiquity in greater fullness than we find elsewhere." ( The Gospels and the Gospel , p. 210. This statement was written in 1901.)

    Gnosticism and Conspiracy Theories
The Da Vinci Code is a best-selling novel by Dan Brown. (Note: this entry includes spoilers). Brown's latest thriller (after Angels and Demons ) is an exhaustively researched page-turner about secret religious societies, ancient coverups and savage vengeance. The action kicks off in modern-day Paris with the murder of the Louvre's chief curator, whose body is found laid out in symbolic repose at the foot of the Mona Lisa. Seizing control of the case are Sophie Neveu, a lovely French police cryptologist, and Harvard symbol expert Robert Langdon, reprising his role from Brown's last book. The two find several puzzling codes at the murder scene, all of which form a treasure map to the fabled Holy Grail. As their search moves from France to England, Neveu and Langdon are confounded by two mysterious groups-the legendary Priory of Sion, a nearly 1,000-year-old secret society whose members have included Botticelli and Isaac Newton, and the conservative Catholic organization

    Rethinking "Gnosticism":
An Argument for Dismantling a Dubious Category
    Michael Allen Williams
Shopping Cart Reviews Table of Contents Most anyone interested in such topics as creation mythology, Jungian theory, or the idea of "secret teachings" in ancient Judaism and Christianity has found "gnosticism" compelling. Yet the term "gnosticism," which often connotes a single rebellious movement against the prevailing religions of late antiquity, gives the false impression of a monolithic religious phenomenon. Here Michael Williams challenges the validity of the widely invoked category of ancient "gnosticism" and the ways it has been described. Presenting such famous writings and movements as the Apocryphon of John and Valentinian Christianity, Williams uncovers the similarities and differences among some major traditions widely categorized as gnostic. He provides an eloquent, systematic argument for a more accurate way to discuss these interpretive approaches. The modern construct "gnosticism" is not justified by any ancient self-definition, and many of the most commonly cited religious features that supposedly define gnosticism phenomenologically turn out to be questionable. Exploring the sample sets of "gnostic" teachings, Williams refutes generalizations concerning asceticism and libertinism, attitudes toward the body and the created world, and alleged features of protest, parasitism, and elitism. He sketches a fresh model for understanding ancient innovations on more "mainstream" Judaism and Christianity, a model that is informed by modern research on dynamics in new religious movements and is freed from the false stereotypes from which the category "gnosticism" has been constructed.
