History of the Baptists in Georgia, 1733 to Present
      Table of Contents
      Introduction.
From our beginnings, Baptists have actively favored the Lordship of Christ, the authority of the Bible rather than ecclesiastical tradition, believer's baptism, the priesthood of all believers, the gathered and congregational church, local church autonomy that encourages associationalism/ connectionalism, the separation of church and state, and religious liberty. Nevertheless, from virtually the start here in Georgia, diversity has also marked our denominational lifea fact that will be made clear as this essay continues. It seems that, in this state as elsewhere, the only time that Baptist is singular is when we are talking about one Baptist.
      Early Baptists.
In 1733, one or two Baptists arrived on the boat with James Oglethorpe: William Calvert, a lay preacher, and his wife, who might have shared his faith. Others soon followed, totaling probably fewer than 140 by 1770. In 1772 the first continuing Baptist church, Kiokee near Appling, was founded; twelve years later the first Baptist association in the state, the Georgia Association, appeared. As the new century opened, there were about 4,700 Baptists, gathered in 72 churches, with 3 district associations that included 90 percent of the total Baptist population. When the new nation was formed in 1776, about .52 percent of all Georgians were Baptist. In 1800 the figure stood at about 3 percent.[1]

... as learned through verbal and written memories. We have not found any old photographs of our building. The old church building was first moved onto the present site in the late 1800’s. The brick structure was then a part of the Christian church denomination. The brick exterior exists today under the present siding. The old stone foundation is still very strong. At some point, the church building was then changed to be a part of the Free Methodist Church group. The property at 2216 Ellis Street was purchased in August 1962, along with a parsonage at 2516 Center Street. Upon the resignation of Rev. Story in 1963, Rev. Stanley Lightfoot, Hr. was called as Pastor. The Bible Baptist Church was officially organized November 8, 1966. The church was accepted into the Wisconsin Association of Regular Baptist Churches on April 1, 1968. The church was received into the fellowship of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, June 24, 1968. The parsonage on Center Street was sold January 1968, and the house at 2209 Ellis Street was purchased for a parsonage.

Ministry Information
Welcome to the Atlanta Bible Baptist Church Sunday Service Fellowship. It is our prayer and desire, by God's grace, to provide doctrinally sound, Biblical exposition during our Sunday Morning worship service for the edifying of the saints and strengthening of the church body. We want to invite you to share in our worship through this broadcast of our morning sermon. The Bible tells us that Christians should "not (forsake) the assembling of ourselves together"(Heb 10:25). We realize that nothing can or should replace the gathering of Christians together personally to worship the LORD and to study His Word. However, if you are unable to attend a local church service this Sunday, we invite you to listen in to our Sunday sermon and we pray that the preached Word will edify your heart and draw you closer to our LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ. Atlanta Bible Baptist Church is an independent Baptist church that was founded in 1964 by Dr. and Mrs. John McNeal Jr. ABBC has always had a burden for winning souls and is an ardent supporter of home and foreign missions. The Hamilton Baptist Church is an Independent, fundamental, Bible believing church, believing that a Biblical church consists of believers meeting together for worship, prayer, teaching, fellowship, the observance of the ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper, and for the carrying out of the Great Commission. This local body of believers organized and incorporated in 1963. Thereafter, they met in members' homes until property was purchased and a basement structure completed. In 1977, the upper story was finished. 1990 marked the church's official recognition as a duly organized New Testament Baptist church. A short time later, the church joined in fellowship with the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches ( GARBC Hamilton Baptist in accordance with its commitment to missions has supported missionaries since 1976. It conducts an annual missions conference with a faith promise emphasis. Our ministry is a family oriented one with children, teens, and adults finding closeness and fellowship in an accepting atmosphere. The church's ministry and programs are supported by the free-will offerings of God's people. As a church body, we are strongly committed to sound Biblical teaching and preaching, believing it is God's Word and the ministry of His Holy Spirit which produces change in the hearts of men, bringing sinners to salvation and believers to spiritual maturity.

350 YEARS OF BAPTIST HISTORY
by Pastor G. Holmes Moore
Bible Baptist Church of St. Louis, MO 1988 marked 350 years of continuous Baptist history in America! The first Baptist churches were established in 1638 in the colony of Rhode Island. One was established in Providence by Roger Williams, and the other in Newport by John Clarke. Williams was only a Baptist for a brief period and his church was not long lived, so Baptist history is better traced through Clarke and the Newport church. Our church was founded in 1954 as an independent Baptist church. We have never been a Denominational church in the sense of belonging to some Convention or Association. However, we are Baptists by conviction and hold, in doctrine and polity, to the historic and regular Baptist position, believing that to be the Biblical position. Be sure to read the following article that points out the Calvinistic bent of Baptists in this country from the earliest times. Most Baptists know little of this history, particularly as it relates to doctrine. THREE HUNDRED FIFTY YEARS OF CONTINUOUS BAPTIST HISTORY IN AMERICA "Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein." (Jer. 6:16)

Myth: Baptists Believe in Doctrinal
Uniformity
by Robert N. Nash, Jr.
The myth of doctrinal uniformity among Baptists is easy to explode. Most Baptists would agree with historian William H. Brackney that “the reasons for disintegration among the people called Baptists often outweigh what Baptists hold in common.” [1] Baptists love controversy, especially theological controversy. In fact, Baptists fight theological battles on two fronts: against other Baptists and against everybody else. We are a bit like a pair of siblings who fight each other tooth and nail until someone else comes along and joins in the fray. Sometimes we forget our differences and battle the common enemy. Without an enemy, though, we are perfectly content to pound on family members. Baptists have never had doctrinal uniformity. We have disagreed over hundreds of theological issues throughout our history. We have battled about the nature of Christ’s atonement, the proper mode of baptism, the Sabbath, the nature of the church, missions and evangelism, footwashing, the Bible, and a myriad of other theological issues, both weighty and inconsequential.
Doctrinal Dissent and Individual Conscience
Constant doctrinal conflict should not surprise us. The Baptist tradition emerged in the early seventeenth century as a reaction against a state church, the Church of England, which was

Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org ) - The term "independent fundamental Baptist church" refers not to a denomination but to a type of church. These churches are Baptist in doctrine and polity. They are independent in relation to other churches, meaning there is no denominational or ecclesiastical headquarters which has authority over these churches; each church is autonomous under its one Head Jesus Christ. They are also fundamentalist in their stand for Bible truth, meaning they are militant in their zeal for Bible doctrine and they practice ecclesiastical separation. There are an estimated 10,000 independent Baptist churches in the United States, and these churches support approximately 6,000 missionaries. Though independent Baptists do not believe in denominational structures which influence or control the assemblies, they do believe in fellowship, and they associate and work together in various ways for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Two loosely knit fellowships of independent Baptist preachers and churches are the Southwide Baptist Fellowship (SBF) and the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship (FBF). Southwide was formed in 1956 at a meeting held in Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Fundamental Baptist Fellowship of America can trace its roots back to 1920, but its present form began in 1967.
