In their use of both "native" FWBO and "alien" knowledge, they engage in a bricolagic creation of a Buddhist environment and community. Through these practices, members are inventing a Buddhist "sacred place" while creating themselves as a community. Keywords Buddhism in New Zealand; Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO);

106. SFBC--What Is An Order Member?
FWBO SF San Francisco Bay Area friends of the western buddhist order Buddhism The Western Buddhist Order (WBO) is a spiritual community of men and women
http://www.sfbuddhistcenter.org/whatom.htm
What is an Order member?
The Western Buddhist Order (WBO) is a spiritual community of men and women who have committed themselves to working toward Enlightenment. In more traditional terms, Order members have made Going for Refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the central point of their lives. There are over 1,000 Order members all over the world-about 500 in the UK, 250 in India, 50 in North America, and others in many different countries. Order members are not necessarily 'teachers', nor do they engage in any particular prescribed lifestyle. Some Order members work in the nonprofit community, some in business, some are artists, some are given partial support to work full- or part-time at a center, some are married and live with their families, some are celibate, some are gay, some live with spiritual friends, and some live alone-not that this exhausts the possibilities! The point is that in the WBO, the emphasis is on spiritual commitment, not lifestyle. It is neither monastic nor lay. Order members wear a white neck sash called a "kesa". Buddhism is a path of collective and individual practice which means acting for the good because one has taken responsibility for one's own thoughts and actions. The WBO aims to be a free association of individual men and women working toward a common goal. There are no rules per se. Part of accepting ordination, however, entails the voluntary practice of ten precepts in order to reduce suffering in one's own life and in the world. The heart of Buddhist ethics is non-violence or loving-kindness. Men and women Order members take the same precepts, and practice on an equal basis.

The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order
What is the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order?
The forms in which Buddhist truths are expressed always adapt according to circumstances. But the essence of Buddhism transcends culture and conditions. Now that Buddhism has come to the West, westerners are faced with the task of creating new and viable Buddhist traditions for the modern world. Over the last thirty years the FWBO has grown to be one of the largest Buddhist movements in the West, with centres and activities in many cities around the world. See english links There are several answers to the question, 'What is the FWBO?'
a buddhist movement for the modern world
The FWBO is a Buddhist movement founded in London in 1967. It seeks to create all of the conditions needed for the effective practice of Buddhism in modern society. It has grown into a varied and energetic tradition of practice, and communal institutions.

Sangharakshita's pamphlet is the third in a series of what might be termed "position papers" that have been delivered to members of the Western Buddhist Order at anniversary events over a period of eight years. These papers, beginning with his "History of My Going for Refuge" in 1988 and followed by "My Relation to the Order" in 1990, mark an era in which Sangharakshita, as founder and head of the Order, has overseen the reorganization of his movement (which also includes the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order). Having passed his seventieth birthday, Sangharakshita is in the process of handing over his responsibilities to a team of Order members. These papers represent a synthesis of ideas contained in his prolific output over several decades. The papers are aimed primarily at the more than six-hundred members of the Western Buddhist Order, most of whom are to be found in Britain, with others in India, Europe, America, and Australasia. As succinct statements setting out the basic principles of the WBO, the papers are also clearly intended for external consumption. The approach in all three is systematic and didactic. Sangharakshita is a well-known critic of what he regards as erroneous, or misplaced beliefs and practices. He regards the Buddhist movement that he founded in London in 1967 as a force for correcting these deficits and adopts a radically reformist position.

    What is Buddhism?
    Buddhism is a path of practice and spiritual development leading to Insight into the true nature of life. Buddhist practices such as meditation are means of changing oneself in order to develop the qualities of awareness, kindness, and wisdom. The experience developed within the Buddhist tradition over thousands of years has created an incomparable resource for all those who wish to follow a path - a path which ultimately culminates in Enlightenment or Buddhahood. Because Buddhism does not include the idea of worshipping a creator God, some people do not see it as a religion in the normal, Western sense. The basic tenets of Buddhist teaching are straightforward and practical: nothing is fixed or permanent; actions have consequences; change is possible. Thus Buddhism addresses itself to all people irrespective of race, nationality, or gender. It teaches practical methods (such as meditation) which enable people to realise and utilise its teachings in order to transform their experience, to be fully responsible for their lives and to develop the qualities of Wisdom and Compassion. There are around 350 million Buddhists and a growing number of them are Westerners. They follow many different forms of Buddhism, but all traditions are characterised by non-violence, lack of dogma, tolerance of differences, and, usually, by the practice of meditation .
