Due to the many and varied forms of Buddhism practised in the West it is difficult to determine with accuracy how many people are involved in its practice. Burnett lists the following statistics as an estimate of those who associate themselves with Buddhism (1990 figures): Austria - 5,000; Denmark - 5,000; Italy - 15-20,000; Germany - 20-40,000; England - 130,000; France - 150,000. The CBFWBO is connected to the Seattle Buddhist Center , which is affiliated with the international Friends of the Western Buddhist Order based in England. " found on the FWBO's main web site. Those familiar with the Mahayana form of Buddhism will find that the Bodhisattva ideal is very much a part of our practice.

Hello and welcome to the Wellington Buddhist Centre's web site. The Wellington Buddhist Centre is part of the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO), a Buddhist movement founded in England in 1967. The FWBO has centres in many European countries, India, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. At the heart of the movement is the Western Buddhist Order, women and men who have been ordained as Buddhists. The FWBO is a movement which draws its teachings from all the major Buddhist traditions using whatever will help us grow and develop. We also encourage an appreciation of the arts and nature. We run meditation classes and retreats. In any way we can, we aim to provide a supportive environment that will: Enable human beings to become individuals Enable individuals to become Enlightened Enable Enlightened individuals to work together for the benefit of all Home About the WBC Meditation Courses Retreats ... http://www.wellingtonbuddhistcentre.org/About the WBC.htm
The Wellington Buddhist Centre is part of a world-wide Buddhist movement called the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO). The FWBO was founded in 1967 by Urgyen Sangharakshita, an Englishman who spent 20 years in India as a Buddhist monk. There he studied, practiced and had contact with the main schools of traditional Buddhism. He returned to the West with a clear awareness that although the essence remains the same, Buddhism must always express itself anew in each age and culture; and so he established a new Buddhist movement, the FWBO. The FWBO is not aligned to any one school of Buddhism but draws inspiration from all traditions. New Zealand FWBO Home Page About the WBC Home About the WBC Meditation Courses Retreats ... Sangharakshita
Sangharakshita was born Dennis Lingwood in South London in 1925. Largely self-educated he developed an interest in the cultures and philosophies of the East early on, and realised that he was a Buddhist at the age of sixteen. The Second World War took him (as a conscript) to India, where he stayed on to become the Buddhist monk Sangharakshita, which means 'protected by the spiritual community'. After studying for some years under leading teachers from major Buddhist traditions, he went on to teach and write extensively. He also played a key part in the revival of Buddhism in India, particularly through his work among the most socially deprived people in India, often treated as untouchables. After twenty years in India, he returned to England and established the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) in 1967, and the Western Buddhist Order in 1968 (known as Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha in India). A translator between East and West, between the traditional world and the modern, between principles and practices, Sangharakshita's depth of experience and clear thinking have been appreciated throughout the world. Among his emphases have been the decisive significance of commitment in the spiritual life, the paramount value of spiritual friendship and community, and the connection between spiritual practice and art. For more information about Sangharakshita see the following links Info about Sangharakshita on the main FWBO Web Site

Abstract Buddhism is one of the fastest growing religions in the West. However, so far only a small minority of those converting to Buddhism have been people of African, Caribbean, or Asian descent. This has significant implications for Buddhism in modern society, for many in the West now routinely encounter both the promise of increasing multiculturalism and the challenges from forces of racial discrimination and social exclusion. Yet there has been little exploration of these issues to date. This literature review suggests possible causes for the present lack of ethnic diversity within Western Buddhist convert sanghas that merit further examination. It compares these

Order Members, Mitras and Friends at Padmaloka after a Public Ordination Creating a New Society The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (known in the West as the FWBO, and in India as Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha Sahayaka Gana - TBMSG) is the interface between the Order and the World. As such, it implies the presence, the meeting or coming together of both Order members and Friends in mutual support and encouragement. The Order inspires the Friends to truer and deeper spiritual practice, and the Friends provide the context for the activities of the Order. In principle, both Order members and Friends give what they can (both spiritually and materially) and take what they need. In order to facilitate spiritual development, followers need leaders; in order to live in the world whilst avoiding rapacious greed, and in order to help others, we all need to practice generosity to the fullest extent we can, and to practice it with wisdom. This is the activity of Compassion, ( karuna , in Sanskrit), which is the whole principle and practice of the New Society which is little by little brought into being by the presence and activity in ordinary society of an effective spiritual Order and supportive friends.
