The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order
The FWBO is an international network dedicated to communicating Buddhist truths in ways appropriate to the modern world. The essence of Buddhism is timeless and universal. But the forms it takes always adapt according to context. Now that Buddhism has come to the West, the task is to create new Buddhist traditions relevant to the 21st century. During the past 35 years the FWBO has become one of the largest Buddhist movements, with activities in many cities around the world.

Perceptions of the FWBO in British Buddhism
By Dharmachari Vishvapani
1. Introduction
Some time in 1997 several British Buddhists started an anonymous campaign against the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order.  Although over the years I have observed a number of controversies in the Buddhist world, some of them very unpleasant, I have not seen anything quite so pointed or venomous as their attempts to ‘put Sangharakshita on trial’, and discredit the FWBO’s work.  Their efforts prompted a substantial and critical article on the FWBO in The Guardian , and their own ‘researches’ were published as a more worked-out critique in The FWBO Files .  In turn this text has been widely distributed, and its highly unfavourable portrait of the FWBO has been given some credence.      When all this happened I was the Director of the FWBO Communication Office, and it fell to me to co-ordinate our response, and to work on our rebuttals.  I co-authored the FWBO’s Response to the FWBO Files .  Along with my colleague Guhyapati I worked closely with Madeline Bunting, the author of The Guardian’s article, and later I had dealings with the

Friends of the Western Buddhist Order
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) is a Buddhist movement that was founded in the UK by Sangharakshita (formerly Dennis Lingwood) in , followed by the Western Buddhist Order in . Sangharakshita spent many years living in India following army service there and was ordained as a Theravadin bhikkhu in . He returned to the UK in at the request of the English Sangha Trust . He came to the opinion that, despite considerable interest in the Buddhist teachings ( Dharma ), Buddhism in Britain was formalistic and sectarian. He then set out to start a new Buddhist movement without a priesthood.

Buddhism is a means to individual and social transformation. The word 'Buddha' means 'one who is awake' - in the sense of having woken up to reality. Buddhists believe everybody has this potential for Enlightenment and that, if we wish, we can use the principles and practices of Buddhism to begin on the path of self-transformation that eventually brings us to perfect Wisdom and Compassion. Meditation is the art of cultivating calm, focused and positive states of mind. We teach two meditations , both of which have been practised in Buddhism from its earliest days. The 'mindfulness of breathing' is a meditation for developing clarity and awareness. The 'metta bhavana' is a practice for transforming our emotions, and for cultivating positivity and openness towards ourselves and others.
