FOURTH WAY?:
Judgment Day: The end for Blair? : He took on his party and tamed it, he took on the Tories and trounced them twice, but then he ‘liberated’ Iraq and now the Prime Minister, so wrapped up in his image as a winner, could lose it all over tuition fees and the Hutton report. (James Cusick, 25 January 2004, Sunday Herald)
In July 1994, just after winning the leadership of the Labour Party following the death of John Smith, Blair uttered seven words in his acceptance speech that MPs should have written down, underlined, memorised or even had tattooed as a warning for what was to come. “I will tell you how it works …” he said. He was speaking about his definition of socialism, but in the nine years since – perhaps culminating in the vote on Tuesday and the verdict of Lord Hutton the following day – telling his party “how it works” has become Blair’s confrontational trademark. Tony Blair is the nemesis of old Labour and the creational saviour of New Labour. The result? According to one disgruntled backbencher, who will be happily voting against the government on Tuesday, “Blair has simply ripped up the very idea, not just of Labour, but of what a party can be. He’s rewritten the notion that a party is an organised group of people who share the same policies, the same general ideology, share a common purpose. Blair’s idea of party – from the start – was a party to back his ideas. And that, maybe, is about to end”.

"Third" Way or "Fourth" Way?
No Way!
This statement from Bill Clinton to Tony Blair appeared in today's Drudge Report "I say to you there's a fourth way out there. It's not a do nothing conservatism, it's an aggressive pro-change conservatism. "It survives on enemies and attack and triumphs our evidence and argument." Bill Clinton claims he is a champion of the "Third Way." Watch out for the definers. Define and conquer is their game. posted by Eric on 07.12.03 at 11:17 AM

In this twenty-first century, the psychological teachings of George Gurdjieff, Peter Ouspensky and associates continue to have a global influence. Of Greek-Armenian descent, George Gurdjieff (1872-1949), reputedly journeyed through Central Asia, as the twentieth century began, in pursuit of esoteric knowledge of the full potential of man. He reportedly identified a system of balanced, personal development in the tradition of the "Fourth Way" which has variously been termed: the way to heaven, enlightenment, consciousness, and self-realisation. The Fourth Way entails developing all sides of one's being simultaneously yet without having to withdraw from the current circumstances of one's life as required in other systems of development. Gurdjieff communicated his understanding to his personal students and through his writings: "Meetings with Remarkable Men"; the enigmatic and challenging "Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson"; and the tantalisingly incomplete "Life is Real Only Then, When I am'".

A FOURTH WAY: On the Anglican Communion as an Ecumenical Fellowship by The Rev. Mark Harris, D. Min. poetmark@worldnet.att.net In recent days three possible options have been spelled out for the future of the Episcopal Church in what is apparently billed as a time of crisis. These are to, “ Do nothing and see schism; allow for parallel jurisdictions along the English model of "flying bishops"; or, see the creation of a second Anglican Province in the United States.” These options are “ways” to move beyond the purported crisis. They are all pretty dismal sounding. They are that way because they begin with dismal premises - that the Episcopal Church is grievously ill, that grim decisions must be made and that people who have the power to do so must take drastic actions. I have previously suggested in an essay “Courage and the Plow” that the diagnoses concerning the supposed grave illness within the Episcopal Church miss the point, supposing that that this or that ailment of structure, polity, theology or practice is the cause of the problem. They are not. The problem, I suggested then and now concerns a failure of nerve. I believe there is a fourth way to respond to the supposed crises, one that has to do with recovery of courage in the Episcopal Church, with the regaining of nerve.

Hopi Traditional Knowledge
As with all Native American cultures, traditional knowledge is central to Hopi culture. There is no more rewarding method of learning than the original "interactive method," speaking and listening. For the Hopi, traditional knowledge explains not only the origin of all peoples but provides lessons for how to live today.
Multi-level learning
Most of us know at least one children's fairy tale that has a moral lesson in it. Although the story is meant to be entertaining, it is also supposed to be educational. Hopi traditional knowledge is encoded in this way and contains messages on many different levels. In this way, listeners learn new and important lessons as their own understanding deepens. The strength of traditional knowledge lies in its ability to convey a deeper truth. Seen in this light, traditional knowledge is more than just the retelling of events, names, and dates. In this way, traditional knowledge differs from written historical accounts in style and purpose.
The Emergence Story
Hopi traditional knowledge begins with the emergence story. The world we live in now is the fourth way of life that the Hopi have lived. Different

A fourth way
What can the Arabs learn from Turkey, asks Abdel-Moneim Said in this postscript to his series on the Arabs and 9/11 After completing the series on Arab reactions to 9/11 and preparing to move on to another subject, my attention was caught by development sin Turkey, which compelled me to add one more instalment. The victory of the Justice and Development Party (JDP) in the Turkish parliamentary elections may have brought within reach a solution to the problem of religion and the state in the Arab and Islamic world a problem that has plagued it since the 19th century. The JDP has taken a number of stands that are "secular" in essence and demonstrate a desire to exist in harmony with, rather than to recoil from or oppose, the West. Indeed, one is struck by the fact that the party appears keener to expound "Western" values than even some secularist parties. With respect to the veil, for example, it has said that wearing it or not is a matter of personal choice and should not be dictated by the state or any other organisation. Thus, ironically, a party with "Islamic" origins has felt compelled to work out a new equation for balancing Islamic, secularist and democratic values. In other words, it has found that it must approach the problems of modernism, industrialisation and progress from premises inherent in Islamic culture and civilisation, rather than from the strictures of Islamic law. It appears, therefore, that the Turkish party has for the first time ventured upon an Islamic democratic experiment that is no different in essence from the practice of Christian democratic parties in the West. Although Christian democratic parties seek inspiration from Christian principles and morals in their assessment of legislation, they do not claim to rule or stand in opposition in the name of religion. Otherwise put, they are fully aware of their options, but simultaneously aware that the choices they make are "human" choices and, therefore, subject to the laws of fallibility.

Ouspensky: A Thirst for Knowledge
Ouspensky in Search of the Miraculous
Ouspensky worked for several years as a journalist, traveling in Russia, the East, and Europe. In 1905 he wrote his first novel, The Strange life of Ivan Osokin , based on the idea of eternal recurrence. After finding theosophical literature (which was prohibited in Russia), he discovered the idea of esotericism, which gave him the possibility of looking at religion and mysticism from a different angle. In 1908 he traveled in Turkey, Greece, and Egypt, and upon his return to Russia in 1909 he left Moscow to live in St. Petersburg, where he began giving public lectures on his travels and his continuing search for the miraculous.
Ouspensky and Gurdjieff
Ouspensky met George Gurdjieff in Moscow in the spring of 1915. Gurdjieff’s ideas immediately produced a strong impression on Ouspensky. In his words: “ I realized that I had met with a completely new system of thought surpassing all I knew before. This system threw quite a new light on psychology and explained what I could not understand before in esoteric ideas.” He immersed himself in Gurdjieff’s teaching and made every effort to promote it in Russia. Nevertheless, the personal connection with Gurdjieff, as intense and productive as it was, proved to be of short duration. As early as 1918 Ouspensky began to feel the inevitable necessity of a separation, and they parted in that year. Although they later had brief periods of working together, in 1924 Ouspensky announced that his work would henceforth proceed independently of Gurdjieff’s. The last time they met was in Paris in 1930.
