The cult of Bush
The hype this week is all about the $40 million for the Bush bash but the St. Petersburg Times is on the trail of some creepier money mojo. "Veiled sect hails Bush, Martinez," reports Lucy Morgan, the paper's Tallahassee bureau chief. "A mysterious committee backed by members of a secretive religious group whose members are forbidden to vote spent more than $500,000 on newspaper ads last year supporting President Bush and U.S. Senate candidate Mel Martinez. "The Thanksgiving 2004 Committee raised the money from residents of 18 states, plus $377,262 from Bruce Hazell of London, England. None of the money was raised in Florida, according to a report filed with the Federal Elections Commission. The group of men who formed the committee belong to the Exclusive Brethren, a reclusive religious group with roots in England and Australia. The group includes members from Knoxville, Tenn., Omaha, Neb., and other U.S. cities." The pro-Bush brethren, it appears, are fairly aligned with the prez in practice as well as in spirit. "Members of the Exclusive Brethren do not vote, read newspapers, watch television or participate in the outside world, according to published reports," the Times continues. "So why would they care who gets elected in the United States? That's hard to say and members contacted by the St. Petersburg Times wouldn't say anything except to praise President Bush and say they wanted to see him re-elected.

Independent Fundamentalist Family
Churches in this family flowed from the work of John Nelson Darby (1800-1882). He was an Anglican priest who came to reject the idea of a state church and sought an approach to faith that would be non-denominational. The movement he began in England in the 1820s attempted a more complete revival of early Christianity than either the Puritan or Wesleyan movements, which had come earlier. This new movement sought to literally recreate the Apostolic church through intense focus on the Bible. Darby’s key theological concept was “dispensationalism.” From his work came modern fundamentalism. Dispensationalism sees the Bible as a history of God's dealing with humanity in terms of various periods (dispensations) of history. There are different characteristics of the various periods and subdivisions, with different themes and issues apparent at different times. Based on this theory, the true church was seen as a faithful subgroup. Anyone who would foster a particular denomination was seen as acting contrary to the action of the Holy Spirit. Darby established assemblies of like-minded believers. They accepted no authority except the "charismatic" leadership of Darby.

Behind Closed Doors
The Inside Story of life in the Exclusive Brethren Church
by
Ngaire Thomas
Are embittered ex-members and the media painting the wrong picture of the Exclusive Brethren Church?
What is the REAL story?
Would anyone be able to join this exclusive group of strict fundamentalist Christians?
What goes on in those mysterious windowless buildings?
This is an intriguing first hand account of one family's experience as the author takes us behind closed doors, and gives us a glimpse of what life was like growing up in an Exclusive Brethren community, and tells us in plain non-judgemental style how hard it was for the family to eventually adapt to life on the outside.
A Message from the Author The plea "Tell me a story", has been echoed down through the ages from children and adults alike because storytelling is a useful way of conveying imagery of a bygone era. Some of my early memories are from stories passed down from parents and grandparents while others come from actual happenings and are etched forever on my mind. No two people's memories are quite the same even between those who were exposed to the same events that caused the memories. I don't expect others to have exactly the same recollections of growing up Exclusive Brethren as I remember it, but some of their experiences will be similar. Although some of this book is told in a story telling genre, it is not dramatized or exaggerated. At times I have used a dialogue style of writing to help convey the type of language used in this particular cultural environment. It is written in the past tense because I left the Exclusive Brethren in 1974 and some of their attitudes may have changed since then.

The Republic Of Heaven David Boulton author of The Trouble with God: Religious Humanism and the Republic of Heaven , was one of the keynote speakers at the 2004 SoFiA Conference in Perth. You wouldn’t expect me to come to Australia without doing a little research on your country. I like to go back to beginnings, and I was intrigued to find you have your own Australian creation myth in your very own Australian version of the scriptures. So, my reading is taken from Genesis Down Under , chapter 1, verse 1: “In the beginning God created day and night. He created day for footy matches, going to the beach and barbies. He created night for going prawning, sleeping and barbies. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came and it was the Second Day. “On the Second Day God created water - for surfing, swimming and barbies on the beach. God saw that it was good. “On the Third Day God created the Earth to bring forth plants - tobacco to burn, malt and yeast for beer, and wood for barbies. God saw that it was good. “On the Fourth Day God created animals and crustaceans for chops, sausages, steak and prawns for barbies. God saw that it was good.

Shut Up Sarah
By Marion Field
Highland Books. 255 pages. £5.99
ISBN 1 897913 28 1 This true account reads like a novel and makes compelling but shocking reading.
The book seems to expose the pressures forced on members of the authoritarian and secretive Exclusive Brethren led by the late James Taylor Junior. The narrative traces 'Sarah's' life from the age of 13, when she personally experiences the psychological cruelty of the leadership, until she breaks free from the sect, aged 19. One gets a sense of the loyalty 'Sarah' has for her family and her fear of the consequences to them and to herself should she leave the 'Brethren'. The wonder of 'Sarah's' discovery that there are other Christians 'out there' will ring true with many ex-Exclusives.
One might wonder whether the Exclusive Brethren teaching is as bad as the book suggests. Sadly, all that is written corresponds with my own experiences and from information that I have managed to glean from other sources. The positive thread running through the book is the way 'Sarah's' relationship with the Lord is seen to grow and how he answered her prayers.
The extensive use of jargon may prove confusing to the uninitiated reader although the author does explain many terms in the text. A glossary would have been useful. There are also a number of printing errors.

Musalaha Theological Seminar: Jerusalem September 1997 Bringing together Palestinian and Messianic Leaders Seminar 1: Dispensationalism Defined Historically I would like to begin by putting dispensationalism within its historical context. 1. Evangelicalism The term 'Evangelicalism' denotes a broad spectrum of theological opinion arising out of the Reformation, Puritanism and Revivalism. Tertullian was one of the first to use the term around AD 200 in his defence of biblical truth against Marcion. Martin Luther used the term to describe John Hus, but it was Thomas More who introduced the word to the English language. In a ' vitriolic attack ' on William Tyndale in 1532, More referred to those ' evangelicalles '. The distinctive doctrines of Evangelicalism include a belief in the supreme authority of scripture over tradition (s ola Scriptura ); in the literal interpretation of scripture; adherence to the historic creeds; the need for a personal faith in Jesus Christ for salvation and holiness; and a belief in the imminent, visible and personal return of Jesus Christ. 2. Fundamentalism

STEM Publishing The writings of Hamilton Smith Open Brethren, Open Brethren, Their Origin, Principles, and Practice. Hamilton Smith, 1930. Introduction. The writer of the following paper has no quarrel with those known as Open Brethren. Their Gospel zeal and Missionary labours are well known and matters for thankfulness. That they meet on principles that the writer believes to be unscriptural is a matter that he regrets and if anything put forward in the following paper leads some to a clearer apprehension of scriptural principles it will be to him a cause of thankfulness. At the same time he deprecates anything that might have the appearance of an attack upon a company of the people of God. If then by chance this paper falls into the hands of any Open Brethren let such be assured that the fact that the writer sharply differs from them as to Scriptural principles of gathering would not, in itself, have called forth the following paper. One reason alone has led to this paper, namely, a few individuals have arisen amongst so-called Exclusive Brethren, who advocate and seek to put into practice independent principles akin to those of the Open Brethren. Such have arisen from time to time in days past. but, feeling it was inconsistent to continue with those whose principles they could no longer accept, they quietly withdrew and ceased to trouble their brethren.
